Unmute: Virtual Artist Residency

Are you interested in gaining experience, building networks and professional skills needed to launch or expand your artistic practice?

artsUNITE/UNITÉ des arts is thrilled to launch Unmute: Virtual Artist Residency, a 3-week online artist residency program taking place in March 2021. artsUNITE/UNITÉ des arts will curate up to 6 Canadian artists to create 3 weeks of programming and activations during our National launch. Encouraging creative approaches to entrepreneurship, professional development, and artistic tools and resources, Unmute: Virtual Artist Residency will showcase artists from across Canada to help them grow their own career and collaborate with them on building creative resources for the Canadian creative community.

The goal of this residency is to:

  • Offer curated professional development and income generating opportunities to artists during COVID-19.
  • Invite, celebrate and amplify diverse creative approaches to resource sharing, artistic entrepreneurship, and professional development.
  • Enable artist-led conversations and developments around the future of the arts in Canada.
  • Engage artists through the artsUNITE/UNITÉ des arts online platform: amplify new artist creations supported by artsUNITE/UNITÉ des arts, and present it through the artsUNITE/UNITÉ des arts online platform and social media.

As part of their participation in Unmute: Virtual Artist Residency, Artists-in-Residence, with support from artsUNITE/UNITÉ des arts team, are expected to:

  • Create and share original content to be showcased on the artsUNITE/UNITÉ des arts website.
  • Share your work in the final digital showcase (format TBD by the group).
  • Participate in promotional activities, such as media interviews and discussions.
  • Share the artsUNITE/UNITÉ des arts website and your participation in the Unmute: Virtual Artist Residency on your relevant social media platforms.
  • Attend or participate in other launch events (details to be confirmed closer to launch date).

Artists-in-Residence will be provided with:

  • Artist Fee of $500.00.
  • Free access to creative workshops during the residency.
  • Opportunities to collaborate with artists across the country.
  • Professional Development and 1-on-1 mentorship with a carefully selected mentor.
  • An opportunity to be part of discussions on creative approaches to artistic tools, professional practice, and resources.
  • A national platform to showcase your work.

This residency aims to prioritize emerging and early-career Canadian-based artists working in:

media or film, performing arts (theatre/dance), literature, visual arts, music, and multi-disciplinary art who are interested in participating in a virtual residency during the month of March.

Program components will be offered primarily in English, with translation and ASL services available as needed to support the participation of a diverse community of artists. Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident currently based in Canada to qualify for this opportunity.

Charlotte County Archives launches new website to provide rich gem of online resources

St. Andrews, NB —The Charlotte County Archives (CCA), located in St. Andrews, has just launched an
exciting new website and has adopted a vibrant new look and feel. These initiatives will help citizens
around the province, and beyond, access new digital files and photos with the click of a button.
Board Chair Franklin Cardy says of these developments, “We have been working towards making our
holdings accessible to the public over the past year and our new website is the culmination of that work.
Increasingly, people want to be able to view documents online, either for research purposes, to discover
more about their roots, or to learn more about our rich history. And during this pandemic it is safer and
easier for people to learn more through online searches.”

The initial funding for the website was a $5,000 grant from the Provincial Department of Tourism,
Heritage and Culture — Museum Services. This Digital World and Social Media grant enabled CCA to
contract the services of Loyalist City Web Design to create a beautiful and functional new website,
where you can see what collections CCA has in its environmentally protected vault. You can read lists of
church records, microfilm, and library holdings. You can also read about items of genealogical interest
and see a myriad of archival photos. https://ccarchives.ca/

A second grant, from Young Canada Works, is funding an internship focused on the creation of a digital
vault for the storage of digitized documents. This will provide guidelines for accessioning, and training
for community partners on how to collect and index holdings. Keith MacKnight has been hired as the
intern and, working with Archives Manager Heather Wilson and Board members, he will showcase the
digital resources of the Archives. Hundreds of new digitized records and 25,000 digitized photos show
the readiness of the CCA to further adapt to COVID-19 protocols.

Graphic designer Elaine Wilson, working with the Archives positioning committee, has designed the
strong new logo, which appears on the new website and will be used in future communications and
signage.

In February, CCA hosted a Heritage Fair at the Garcelon Centre, where like-minded archival and historic
community groups encouraged the Archives to become a hub for all such groups in the County. A new
listing on the CCA web site will unite these groups in a shared goal of preserving the past, including
events happening as recently as yesterday. The Charlotte County Archives encourages people to label
their own digital photos clearly for future users and invites citizens from Charlotte County to consider
sending items of historic interest to the Archives for careful preservation.

Connexion Exchange: Applications open for NB emerging artists

Connexion Exchange

Connexion ARC is putting out a call to early/mid-career artists for a collaborative program entitled, Connexion Exchange.

Connexion Exchange pairs eight established and eight emerging or mid-career artists for a 3-month mentorship. These mentorships will result in a paid commission for a collaborative artwork and artist talk presented by each pair. This program is for artists seeking peer feedback, community building, and an opportunity to collaborate with an established artist you admire. Mentor artists will be approached after mentees are selected to ensure the best possible opportunity and fit for both parties.

Connexion ARC is calling on early/mid-career artists in New Brunswick to apply to Connexion ARC for this program by February 26, 2021.

Public Art Call

The New Brunswick Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture invites professional artists to submit proposals to design, create and install public artwork at the new Arc-en-ciel School in Oromocto, NB. The total budget for commissioning public artwork at this site is $50,000. Once works are created and installed, they become part of collection ArtNB (formerly The New Brunswick Art Bank). Preference will be given to New Brunswick professional artists. Please reference the guidelines and application form. Potential sites for public art, site plans, and photos can be found in the resources section.
The deadline to submit applications to culture@gnb.ca is Friday, March 12.

Attention Atlantic Canadian Visual Artists! Do you need help creating an online strategy to present your work? Would you like some guidance on how to digitally present your portfolio in a professional way, how to navigate and manage social media, and how to digitally collaborate and network during Covid-19 restrictions or other constraints?

Jones Gallery has received funding from Canada Council for the Arts to create an in-depth webinar series about digital professionalization and online strategies for Atlantic Canadian visual artists. We are distilling some of our ideas and experiences into (what we hope) is a useful guide for our region’s artists – a strategy to help you work, connect, and adapt in a digital environment.

While parts of this webinar series will address the specific challenges of working and building a visual arts career in Atlantic Canada, ARTwork webinar content will be completely free and accessible for all Canadian artists of any discipline.

We need your input to complete our programming! Third Space Gallery is seeking to fill the position of THIRD SHIFT Festival Associate. The successful candidate will work closely with staff and volunteers of Third Space Gallery to present THIRD SHIFT Contemporary Arts Festival in Saint John, New Brunswick in August 2021. The successful candidate will work with the Executive Director at USTATION on Prince William St, and will work remotely during COVID-19 Recovery Plan Red and Orange phases. NEW GRANT FOR EMERGING INDIGENOUS ARTISTS

January 12, 2021 – Music·Musique NB is launching a new pilot project aimed at Indigenous musicians. The initiative, sponsored by Mi’kmaq Hip Hop artist Wolf Castle, was created to provide one emerging Indigenous artist from New Brunswick with the tools, support and guidance to achieve a new musical project.

“We need more Indigenous voices and more spaces where these voices can be heard,” says artist Wolf Castle. “This pilot project sets the stage to give young Indigenous artists a chance to get in the spotlight.” 

One recipient will be chosen by an all-indigenous jury and will receive a $3000 grant to complete a music-based project. Projects can include, but are not limited to, recording a music video, developing online content, creating a sound recording, and expanding musical skills. The artist will also receive mentorship and support to help them achieve their artistic and professional goals and aspirations.

Artists can propose a project before January 29.

Good afternoon, cultural stakeholders, arts galleries, collectives, centres and arts and culture organizations.

First, Happy New Year to all of you! We hope that 2020 will have set the stage to make 2021 a year full of new opportunities and achievements!

Here is a friendly reminder of a deadline coming up very soon at the New Brunswick Arts Board (artsnb):

Please note that the deadline for the Artist-in-Residence Program is February 1st, 2021.

The Artist-in-Residence Program is intended for New Brunswick public or private institutions and organizations that wish to host professional artists to enable them to pursue specific projects relating to their creative work. The invited artists may reside in New Brunswick or outside the province. This program is also open to individual professionals who seek to advance their creative work through participation in long-term (3 months or more) residency opportunities at home or outside the province. The artists in residence are to contribute to the promotion and understanding of the arts by means of the artists’ contact with the clientele of the establishments.

We strongly encourage you to apply as soon as possible for this program; your participation in this program fosters the development of arts throughout the province! If you have any questions, especially questions related to health regulations and planning and budgeting in the time of COVID, please reach out to our Program Officer at (506) 440-0037, or by email at prog@artsnb.ca.

Veuillez noter que la date limite pour le programme d’Artiste en résidence est le 1er février 2021.

 

Le programme d’artiste en résidence s’adresse aux institutions publiques ou privées et aux organismes néo-brunswickois qui désirent accueillir des artistes professionnels dans le cadre de projets leur permettant de se consacrer à leur activité créatrice. Les artistes invités peuvent être résidents du Nouveau-Brunswick ou d’ailleurs. Les artistes individuels peuvent aussi faire une demande pour leur permettre de participer à des résidences à long-terme (3 mois ou plus) soit au Nouveau-Brunswick ou à l’extérieur de la province. Les artistes en résidence doivent contribuer à la promotion et à la compréhension des arts par leur présence auprès de la clientèle de l’établissement hôte.

Nous vous encourageons vivement à appliquer le plus tôt possible pour cette subvention; votre participation à ce programme favorise le développement des arts dans toute la province ! Charlotte County Archives puts funding from the Council of Archives New Brunswick to strategic use

Charlotte County Archives puts funding from the Council of Archives New Brunswick to strategic use
St. Andrews, NB — Matt Honey, Archives Manager at the Charlotte County Archives (CCA), recently
secured funding from the Council of Archives New Brunswick (CANB) for three very significant projects.
Each project will help fulfil the mission of the Archives — to collect, preserve and conserve, through
archival best practices, the pre-eminent collection of significant documents relating to the evolving
history and culture of Charlotte County, and actively engage the public through research, education, and
outreach.

With an envelope of $3000 from CANB, the Charlotte County Archives will organize and catalogue
documents associated to or collected by the Charlotte County Historical Society (CCHS) over the years.
The predecessor of the Charlotte County Archives, the CCHS first organized in 1975, before the current
Charlotte County Archives was formed. All the hard work and research completed by the CCHS will be
made accessible to future researchers through this funding.
A grant of $2900 was awarded to the Charlotte County Archives to carefully examine, organize, and
catalogue the fonds (personal collections) of Dr. Charles Smith, Earl Caughey, Jackie Gibson, and Rose
McKay Haughn. These collections will provide further insight into churches, schools, family histories,
court proceedings, Charlotte County militia, the Town of St. Andrews, and other precious details about
Charlotte County history.

And finally, CANB has given $1400 towards arranging and processing 47 maps, floorplans, and
blueprints, each of value to researchers across the County.
This funding, in conjunction with a new website soon to be launched by the Charlotte County Archives,
will enable people to learn more about Charlotte County through online searches, a definite benefit
during the current pandemic, when social distancing is so crucial.

A HANDMADE ASSEMBLY: Call for Proposals

 

We invite Artists and Writers from across Canada and abroad to submit proposals for an upcoming publication exploring the theme of the Handmade.

Deadline for submissions: January 5, 2021

The origins of this publication are rooted in a long-running annual event hosted by Struts Gallery and the Owens Art Gallery that brought together artists, curators, and makers from the region and beyond to lead discussions, facilitate workshops, initiate projects, exhibit work, and share in a common thread—the handmade.

A Handmade Assembly originated in response to an increased interest in the handmade, deskilling, and DIY aesthetics that emerged in contemporary art practices near the beginning of the decade. The topic continues to appeal to artists exploring the extraordinary potential of craft processes, materials, and techniques, both for their capacity to speak directly and viscerally and for their political and historical potency.

For its tenth and final iteration, the long-running programme will be re-envisioned as an ambitious, bilingual book project that parlays nine years’ worth of inquiry into a comprehensive volume, with the goal of providing a multi-faceted view of the role of the handmade in contemporary art, while also extending these discussions to a new format.
CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Artists Projects in Print

Deadline January 5, 2021

A Handmade Assembly has always encompassed a wide range of artistic practices and areas of research, including photography, performance, mending practices, food culture, collage, printmaking, flower arranging, and the intersection of new technologies with traditional craft approaches. We invite artists working in all disciplines to consider how the broad theme of the “handmade” might translate to a project on the printed page. Artists may document existing projects or produce new works. We encourage play within the format of the book, including handmade tactile elements, instructional works, creative writing, printed cut-outs, pull-out and tipped-in materials (bearing in mind cost, labour and edition size), etc.

Submission Format for Artists:
Please submit the following materials via WeTransfer to info@strutsgallery.ca with the subject heading: A Handmade Assembly

  • One-page (max.) description of the proposed project and the themes addressed
  • Up to 10 images of past work
  • Descriptions for each image including: title, date, materials, dimensions, etc.
  • A brief biography (250 words)
  • A brief artist statement (250 words)
  • Curriculum vitae (max. 3 pages), including contact information.
Artists will be paid fees consistent with the current CARFAC fee schedule. We encourage applications from IBPOC, LGBTQ2S+, disabled, and neuro-diverse artists.

A Handmade Assembly has dedicated nine years towards pushing back against dominant art narratives that marginalize craft practices and has worked to foster and support an appreciation of the myriad art forms encompassed by the term handmade. We invite writers to interpret the topic of the “handmade” broadly, with the aim of presenting a multi-faceted view of the role of the handmade in contemporary art. Writers are encouraged to propose critical, historical or interpretive essays, interviews, creative writings, and so forth that address the intersection of contemporary art and the handmade. Ideally, we are seeking texts ranging from 500 to 1000 words.

Submission Format for Writers:
Please submit the following materials via WeTransfer to info@strutsgallery.ca with the subject heading: A Handmade Assembly

  • A brief one-page (max) proposal for an essay, interview or other text work

OR

  • A completed piece that has not been previously published (max. 1000 words);
  • Two writing samples which demonstrate your style and interests;

Additional funding for the arts

When can the recovery truly begin and what will it look like? Even if we can’t say for sure, we can prepare.

In its 2020 Fall Economic Statement, the federal government announced $181.5M in additional funds in 2021‒22 for the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Canada Council for the Arts to enhance their support to the arts sector. We expect that the specifics of the funding will be revealed in early 2021.

With these funds, the Council plans to support projects that create jobs. As soon as we get the green light, we will announce our initiatives, and we intend to distribute the funding very quickly. It is urgent that we support those who have been without work thus far. You should start preparing now.

  • If you have research and creation projects that require hiring collaborators, now is the time to define the broad strokes.
  • If you are part of an artistic group or organization, now is also the time to consider creative projects for new works or adaptations of existing works that will enable you to share your artistic and literary creations with broader audiences via digital technology.

We are looking for proposals that require that you hire artists and experts, who need to work to get through the pandemic. Once again, please be ready.

Before the new funding is made available, we will have the opportunity to discuss the last year and our vision for the future with you and with the broader public. And so I encourage you to add our 2021 Annual Public Meeting to your calendars (it will be held at 4 p.m. EST on January 26, 2021).

In closing, I want to thank you for your confidence, and I salute your courage and your efforts to fly the arts-and-culture flag high and proud during these difficult times. I wish you restorative holidays. I hope you take time to recuperate—and rest assured that we will be by your side more than ever after the holiday break.

Masked ~ Call For Submissions – open until 31 December 2020

BLACK DOG & ONE-EYED PRESS is currently seeking submissions of up to five poems. We anticipate the 2021 print publication of a book of paintings along with poems which speak to or in some way reflect upon the state of the world in 2020 and the ways in which we, as individuals and as societies, have responded, and/or how we might imagine going forward.

The paintings will be selected from a series which artist and educator Bill Liebeskind began a few weeks into the Covid lockdown in NYC. Each painting shows someone in a mask. PRESS RELEASE for immediate release

Moncton, December 11th, 2020 – Lights, camera, action! This Sunday, the participants of the Création Danse 2020 will premiere their work at the Salle Bernard-LeBlanc in front of the cameras and an audience specially invited for the occasion!

This year, the Création Danse 2020 show will be a virtual event. The DansEncorps team will bring the choreographies from the stage to your living room!  The “Hollywood” adventure will take place in the Salle Bernard-LeBlanc at the Aberdeen Cultural Center on Sunday, December 13th, in front of a targeted audience. The privileged experience of attending the recording is offered to youth aged 10 to 18.  DansEncorps believes they deserve to be gathered for a safe artistic activity and have the chance to witness a live production in a professional setting.

The show will be broadcasted the following weekend; Saturday December 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday December 20 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are now on sale on the website www.ciedansencorps.com/creation-danse.
