Theme: “Breaking Out”

The Fredericton Arts Alliance invites applications for our 21st Artist in Residence Summer Series. Accepted artists receive a $450 honorarium.

We seek emerging and experienced artists working in any media, including architecture, performance, sculpture, music, dance, electronic media, literary arts, visual art, fibre arts and fine craft. We encourage artists from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Because of COVID19, we expect these residencies will be largely virtual, with artists using their own studios and social media and working with the FAA’s social media platforms to showcase their work and process to a wider public. Again, as with last year, we ask each participating artist to organize a “pop-up” live local event as part of their residency. These could be in the form of a poetry reading in front of City Hall, an art display on the Green, a dance lesson at Carleton Park, a demonstration of techniques used during the residency, a musical performance in Odell Park, or something completely different, appropriate to the artist and the media involved.

The pop-up could be during the week of the residency, or in days following it, with weather and COVID restrictions being limiting factors. If a residency occurred during tight COVID controls or during a week of unremitting rain, the pop-up could be arranged later when the forces affecting the virus and the skies are more amenable. This summer our theme will be Breaking Out. It seems an appropriate theme after two years of varying degrees of lock-down – and also appropriate to the idea of moving beyond one’s current scope of practice into a new dimension. We invite artists to reflect on this theme as they work and challenge themselves to break out of their mold. As different artists in varied media focus their creative energies on this theme, we hope to engender discussion among the artists and members of the public, both here and afar.

The week-long residences, one at a time, will run from June 20 to September 10. In their written application, artists should say how they intend to approach the theme and what they plan by way of a “pop-up”. More information is available by email to president@frederictonartsalliance.ca. The Fredericton Arts Alliance will mount an exhibition of work produced over the summer at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre in the fall. Participants will be asked to designate a piece for this exhibition.

Deadline: Applications must be received no later than 4 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2022.

Craft NB has launched a call for artists of all experience levels, who are interested in exploring installation-based work. The Beneath the Surface residency, is a partnership between Craft NB and Parks Canada. It takes place in Fundy National Park from Oct 3rd to Oct 7th, 2022. We award 20 Craft NB members the opportunity to explore new perspectives in craft-making while experiencing New Brunswick’s rich natural environment with the goal of enlivening their individual studio practices. Of these 20 applicants, two spots will be held – one for a diploma or ASP student at NBCCD, and one for an Indigenous artist.

The Town of Sackville Department of Tourism and Business Development will be accepting proposals for a performing artist residency in the Sackville Waterfowl Park, and/or adjacent Visitor Information Centre, until Friday, March 5. Residency length can vary, but the proposed length of the residency should be included in the Performer’s proposal, and it should not begin before June 1 and must end by September 30, 2021. Proposals must include a plan for work in the Waterfowl Park (and/or the adjacent Visitor Information Centre). The work should include an aspect that will be of interest to the general public, and a hands-on aspect that will be of interest to younger people. COVID 19 restrictions, such a physical distancing and wearing masks, should be addressed in the proposal.

Applicants must reside in Sackville.

The proposal should include:

1. A proposed date to host an open-house to allow the public to view the work in progress and to see the artist at work (or alternately to converse with the artist)
2. A proposed date to host an event for young people. It is possible the two aspects (open house and event for young people) could be achieved in the same event.
3. A proposed date for a performance of the work (or work in progress) with a performer’s talk and a possible reception.
4. As noted above, how COVID 19 restrictions, such a physical distancing and wearing masks, will be addressed in the project.

Performing Artists should also indicate how they will assist in the promotion of their project and any activities or events related to it.

Selection criteria will include: past experience; the ability to carry out the project; appeal to a general audience and possibilities for interaction with the public; artistic interest of the project; and ability to insure a COVID safe environment at all phases of the project.

The chosen performing artist will receive an honorarium of $1500. Proposals should include a project outline, an artist’s cv, and samples of work. Materials should be deposited at Sackville Town Hall by Friday, March 5 at 4:30 pm. to the attention of Ron Kelly Spurles, or sent via email to r.kellyspurles@sackville.com. Please note that the deadline for the Artist-in-Residence Program is February 1^st, 2021.

The Artist-in-Residence Program is intended for New Brunswick public or private institutions and organizations that wish to host professional artists to enable them to pursue specific projects relating to their creative work. The invited artists may reside in New Brunswick or outside the province. This program is also open to individual professionals who seek to advance their creative work through participation in long-term (3 months or more) residency opportunities at home or outside the province. The artists in residence are to contribute to the promotion and understanding of the arts by means of the artists’ contact with the clientele of the establishments.

We strongly encourage you to apply as soon as possible for this program; your participation in this program fosters the development of arts throughout the province! Le programme d’artiste en résidence s’adresse aux institutions publiques ou privées et aux organismes néo-brunswickois qui désirent accueillir des artistes professionnels dans le cadre de projets leur permettant de se consacrer à leur activité créatrice. Les artistes invités peuvent être résidents du Nouveau-Brunswick ou d’ailleurs. Les artistes individuels peuvent aussi faire une demande pour leur permettre de participer à des résidences à long-terme (3 mois ou plus) soit au Nouveau-Brunswick ou à l’extérieur de la province. Les artistes en résidence doivent contribuer à la promotion et à la compréhension des arts par leur présence auprès de la clientèle de l’établissement hôte.
