Saint John Artist in Residence Applications 🧑‍🎨

As described in the City of Saint John Arts and Culture Policy, adopted by Common Council on September 26, 2005, the arts make a substantial contribution to the quality of life and vitality of our community.

Saint John Community Arts Board Logo

The City of Saint John believes that one of the most effective means of facilitating the development of arts and culture in Saint John is to provide funding support to non-profit arts and/or cultural organizations serving our community. In this way, arts and culture organizations are encouraged to establish themselves, enhance their services, and provide their programming to the community.

Accordingly, the City through the Saint John Community Arts Board has implemented the Community Arts Funding Program. This program is designed to provide project support for non-profit organizations or groups wishing to offer quality arts activities in any discipline of the creative arts within the City of Saint John. There are currently two rounds of funding each year: Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter.

Spring/Summer round of funding has now closed. Fall/Winter applications will be live in August.

Applications are now being accepted for the City of Saint John Community Arts Board’s Artist in Residence Program

“Celebrating the diversity of artistic practice while making meaningful connections”

The Saint John Community Arts Board invites local artists to apply to the Artist in Residency Summer/Fall 2022 program. This residency encourages local artists to engage and collaborate with the city while developing their artistic practice.

Application and guidelines are here.

The deadline for Summer/Fall Artist in Residence applications is July 7th 2022.

The Fredericton Arts Alliance CALL FOR APPLICATIONS ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE SUMMER 202

Theme: “Breaking Out”

The Fredericton Arts Alliance invites applications for our 21st Artist in Residence Summer Series. Accepted artists receive a $450 honorarium.

We seek emerging and experienced artists working in any media, including architecture, performance, sculpture, music, dance, electronic media, literary arts, visual art, fibre arts and fine craft. We encourage artists from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Because of COVID19, we expect these residencies will be largely virtual, with artists using their own studios and social media and working with the FAA’s social media platforms to showcase their work and process to a wider public. Again, as with last year, we ask each participating artist to organize a “pop-up” live local event as part of their residency. These could be in the form of a poetry reading in front of City Hall, an art display on the Green, a dance lesson at Carleton Park, a demonstration of techniques used during the residency, a musical performance in Odell Park, or something completely different, appropriate to the artist and the media involved.

The pop-up could be during the week of the residency, or in days following it, with weather and COVID restrictions being limiting factors. If a residency occurred during tight COVID controls or during a week of unremitting rain, the pop-up could be arranged later when the forces affecting the virus and the skies are more amenable. This summer our theme will be Breaking Out. It seems an appropriate theme after two years of varying degrees of lock-down – and also appropriate to the idea of moving beyond one’s current scope of practice into a new dimension. We invite artists to reflect on this theme as they work and challenge themselves to break out of their mold. As different artists in varied media focus their creative energies on this theme, we hope to engender discussion among the artists and members of the public, both here and afar.

The week-long residences, one at a time, will run from June 20 to September 10. In their written application, artists should say how they intend to approach the theme and what they plan by way of a “pop-up”. Application forms and guidelines are available on the Fredericton Arts Alliance website – www.frederictonartsalliance.ca.

More information is available by email to president@frederictonartsalliance.ca. The Fredericton Arts Alliance will mount an exhibition of work produced over the summer at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre in the fall. Participants will be asked to designate a piece for this exhibition.

Deadline: Applications must be received no later than 4 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2022.

Fresh AIR: NB Outdoor Artists in Residence

Artist-in-residence program returns this summer

The Fresh AIR (artist-in-residence) program will return for the 2021 summer season through a collaboration between the provincial government and the New Brunswick Arts Board, also known as artsnb.

The program will support 10 artists as they engage with the public and develop their artistic practice or existing projects over five days at a New Brunswick provincial park or tourism site.

“Last year’s launch of this program was an incredible success and we are happy to be able to expand it to even more locations this summer,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Tammy Scott Wallace. “This is one of the many ways we are supporting our province’s artistic community throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The 2021 Fresh AIR program will expand from five to 10 locations this year: Mactaquac, Herring Cove, Hopewell Rocks, Fundy Trail Parkway, Parlee Beach, Miscou Lighthouse, Village Historique Acadien, Sugarloaf, Jardin botanique du Nouveau-Brunswick, and Mount Carleton.

“For artsnb, the Fresh AIR program offer a double springboard: it allows our professional artists to meet new audiences in extraordinary contexts,” said Alain Boisvert, chairperson of the New Brunswick Arts Board. “This partnership brings new meaning to the accessibility of the general public to the exceptional works of professional New Brunswick artists.”

Selected participants will be offered an artist fee for participating in the residency and complimentary accommodations at their chosen site, if applicable.

“This program will provide opportunities for professional artists to express themselves, gain exposure and enhance their work portfolio,” said Scott-Wallace. “It will also offer New Brunswickers a better appreciation of culture and the arts while showcasing our artists and their creative process.”

The program will take place from June 23 to Aug. 29 and is open to all New Brunswick professional artists. Selected artists will choose their preferred location and submit an application, which will be reviewed by a selection committee.

The deadline to apply is April 23. The application and more information are available online.

Call for applications – Cross-Cultural Creation Residency

Cross-Cultural Creation Residency

A francophone artist

An anglophone artist

An indigenous artist

The Association acadienne des artistes professionnel.le.s du Nouveau-Brunswick (AAAPNB), ArtsLink NB and Mawi’Art: Wabanaki Artist Collective, join forces again for the second Cross-cultural creation residency. A community residency between an acadian artist, an anglophone artist, and an indigenous artist in New Brunswick.

This year’s program will take place in two week-long stages, in different NB communities. Through this residency, artists will have the opportunity to create new work while immersing themselves in the artistic process of fellow artists.

The experience of being in another community and creating with people of different artistic backgrounds allows one to go beyond language barriers and discover different cultural environments. Recognizing current debates surrounding cultural and language tensions in New Brunswick, this initiative demonstrates that it is possible to grow by combining strengths rather than advocating division. Art in itself is a means of expression and cohesion and makes it possible to break down the boundaries that all too often isolate us.

French

OBJECTIVES OF THE RESIDENCE

  • To encourage the artistic exploration and the production of new works by providing space and time
  • To contribute to increasing the artistic quality of the work
  • To favour the collaboration and the sharing of expertise and experiences
  • To create significant cultural bridges of different cultural communities in the province.
  • To provoke encounters between artists and the public and to help raise awareness of the creative process.

The work in progress must be presented publicly at the end of each week. The artists will have complete freedom of creation, but will be called upon to open their creation space to allow the community to discover their work through open-studio visits.

THE SELECTED ARTISTS UNDERTAKE TO :

  1. Provide their own working materials
  2. Interacting with the participating artists
  3. Present publicly the work in progress at the end of each week in the form of an exchange with the public.
