CALL: Theatre New Brunswick is Seeking Scripts to Workshop for their Fall Festival of New Plays

Theatre New Brunswick is seeking scripts to workshop for a Fall Festival of New Plays, taking place from September to November of 2020.  If you are a New Brunswick born or based playwright, and you have a full-length script that is ready for a workshop, they’d like to hear from you.

The Fall Festival of New Plays will support artists in their creation process. This might mean that you work “traditionally” and you have a script and need time with a dramaturge and a cast of actors. It might mean that you and your team need studio space to create and move. The Theatre will work with you to help you take the next step with your play.

Preference will be given to working on ideas and scripts that are already in development, as opposed to ideas that are very new. The projects and the creators should be ready for outside input, criticism and collaboration. It is not necessary that the play be something that TNB would consider producing.

TNB will provide:

  • a dramaturge to work with and help establish goals/writing schedule;
  • a cast of actors to read your work monthly (if required);
  • a director who will direct your final reading or Event;
  • a fee for the applicant/playwright.

The deadline for applications is July 31, 2020. For more information and to apply, click here.

CALL: Proposals for Permanent Public Art Installation in Sackville, NB

UPDATED DEADLINE

The Town of Sackville invites professional artists to design, develop, create and deliver a permanent public art installation in order to convey a message of awareness of climate change. These can include social, physical, and immediate or long-term concerns and themes relating to climate change.

The Town would like the artist to focus attention on the characteristic location of Sackville with respect to these issues. However, as climate change is a global phenomenon, the Town also welcomes artists to propose other ideas that situate Sackville within the climate change context while using a global lens.

In addition to the relevance to the Town’s mission, artwork must satisfy reasonable standards of permanence and safety, meeting all relevant codes required for public places, and offering reasonable proof of soundness against theft, vandalism or excessive maintenance and repair.

The deadline for submissions is July 21th, 2020, at 11 AM. For more information, design criteria, and to submit your proposal, click here.

CALL: Submit Your Videos of Movement and Dance

Connection Dance Works will be holding its annual Saint John Contemporary Dance Festival online the week of July 20th to 24th due to COVID-19. The festival typically includes a Community Movement Project, where anyone who likes to move, regardless of dance background, is invited to participate and work together over the course of a week to create, rehearse, and then perform a unique work.

This year, Connection Dance Works has issued a call for submissions: they are asking for members of the public to submit short video clips of movement and dance that will be edited together and shared on social media. The soundtrack for the performance is “Never Knowing” by Ladd & Lasses. Video submissions are welcome from anyone. The video can be of an individual, group, family pet (get creative!) and can be shot to include the body in whole or in part. Submissions should be in .mp4 or .mov format and no more than 15 seconds long. You don’t have to show your face in the video if you don’t want to!

Video submissions are due by July 8 and can be sent to sjmovementproject@gmail.com. For more information, click here.

  4. Any special technical requirements the play might have (Live Bait suggests you keep it simple).
  5. A brief resume or description of your playwriting experience and a sample of your previous work if you have some.

Directors and Actors have until June 28 to apply to participate in the Festival. On June 29 successful actors and directors will be notified and will be assigned to plays. They will receive the play on July 5 and have until July 15 to rehearse and prepare for the presentation.

  • To apply as an actor or director, please send a resume of your experience and a brief description of your interest in this project.
  • Directors do not need to have technical presentation experience as Live Bait will be there to assist them. Still, they should be comfortable with the idea of using technology and presenting things online.

All participants will have to agree to follow all appropriate social distancing guidelines during the rehearsal and performance of the shows. Performances will be broadcast in a festival format on Facebook live over two evenings, and the SDSPF will be included as a part of Live Bait’s annual New Works Festival (which will also be held online) from July 17 to 19. As noted, Live Bait will provide technical assistance to the artists as needed throughout the project.

CALL: CreatedHere Magazine and Working Art

CreatedHere is seeking contributors for issue 13 of their magazine titled working art and launching in September 2020.
Art has an optics problem. By some, it is seen as a luxury with poor career prospects, while others believe that talented artists are gifted with their skills. But artists know better. Art = practice and technical development. Art = time (so much time). Art = work: integral, valid and viable work.
CreatedHere is seeking:
  • visual explorations of slow or labour-intensive processes
  • how artistic businesses can adapt to adverse conditions
  • unlikely avenues for artistic income, and grant-funded projects
  • research-backed findings on the economic impact of art & craft
  • making a living: creative entrepreneurs in action
CreatedHere is open to any ideas that creatively fit this theme. You do not need to be an experienced writer, and you can choose to suggest a story for their staff writers. Anyone may submit, and CreatedHere is offering increased payment this year for writers and artists ($100-$250, depending on contribution size).

The position needs to be filled by the beginning of August 2020. For more information and to apply, click here.

CALL: Temporary Public Art – Phoenix Square, Fredericton

The City of Fredericton invites proposals from professional artists to install a temporary public art piece at Phoenix Square, the public space in front of Fredericton City Hall. The art is intended to be in place from July to mid-fall 2020.

Proposals should respond to the province’s collective feelings of the circumstances created by COVID-19. While the theme is related to the recent changes caused by the virus, the form, scope, and materials are open for interpretation by the artists. It is anticipated that the art will have a positive impact on the community and its visitors throughout the summer and fall.

All of Phoenix Square can be considered for the public art display. However, the art must not impede pedestrian access or use of the space, nor pose any safety hazard. During the summer, people use the Square to enjoy a break on benches, play piano, listen to music, access office buildings and enjoy the weather. This summer, the Square will see enhanced usage and vibrancy due to the addition of bistro tables and chairs, which is part of the new “Fredericton al fresco” partnership between the City, Downtown Fredericton, and Business Fredericton North.

Although the public art will be ephemeral, designs should be well constructed, vandal-resistant, and able to withstand summer and fall weather.

A juried selection will take place the week following the submission deadline, and the art installed by the first week of July. Artists are to submit the following:

  • a resume and biography indicating education and body of work;
  • a proposed design concept including text and drawings or diagrams;
  • an itemized budget to a maximum of $5,000 for all costs related to production, transport, installation, removal and artist fees; and,
  • a timeline and process for creation and installation.

This call is open to all professional artists residing in New Brunswick. The submission deadline is Friday, June 12, at midnight. Please email all submissions to culture@fredericton.ca.
