Notable Acts Theatre Festival, July 26th - August 5th

Notable Acts is happy to announce our twenty-second annual province-wide playwriting competition! Contest winners will have their work featured in the 2023 NotaBle Acts Summer Theatre Festival, held in Fredericton: from July 26th – August 5th.

If you’re a New Brunswick playwright, we are seeking submissions in three main categories: one for 15-30 minute site-specific plays, one for 7-10 minute short plays, and another for 30-60 minute one-act plays. Two additional contest categories are for New Brunswick Middle and High school playwrights.

The Theodore Prize is an annual award of $20,000 given to an Atlantic Canadian artist whose work displays a high level of artistic and creative excellence, a command of the artist’s medium, and an acknowledged level of regard from the Atlantic Canadian curatorial/gallery community.

Nocturne, Art At Night: Call for Submissions 🌒

Nocturne is currently seeking artists to participate in our 2023 programming through the development of a temporary public artwork that will be exhibited during our signature night-time art experience taking place on Saturday, October 14.

Founded in 2008, Nocturne: Art at Night Festival (Nocturne) is a free, independent, contemporary art festival in Kjipuktuk (Halifax). Annually, Nocturne brings 60,000+ people to the streets of Halifax and Dartmouth to experience art and celebrate the visual arts scene in Mi’kma’ki (Nova Scotia). This year Nocturne will take place from October 12-15, 2023.

Canadian Heritage is seeking a dynamic, impactful image that conveys the theme “Journeys.”

This theme asks artists to reflect upon the idea of a journey as a means of understanding and growth. Artists may consider the physical and inner journeys that have shaped them, or the collective journeys undertaken by people and communities across Canada in the past, present, or even the future. Artists may also consider the visual implications of the “journey” from one point on the stairs to another.

All genres will be considered – figurative, abstract, collage, photography, trompe l’oeil, pattern, etc.

Two artworks will be chosen by a selection committee to be reproduced on exterior-quality graphic film and installed on stairs at two prominent locations in downtown Ottawa for a one-year period starting in spring 2023. All other eligible submissions will be retained for consideration until August 31, 2023, should additional steps locations become available.

The two winning artists will receive a fee of $5,000 for the exhibition of their artwork.

Call for Submissions: Terrain 🗾

The Ice House Gallery is looking for submissions from sculptors or 3 dimensional artists whose work speaks to the theme of Terrain.

Work will be selected by gallery curator Brandt Eisner. Work chosen will be based on interpretation of the theme and what brings diversity to the show. (Work that hangs on the wall has already been selected).

Women in the Studio 🎧

Music Publishers Canada is now accepting applications for our 2023 Women in the Studio National Accelerator. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the program. We are proud to offer a series of curated production-related opportunities, workshops, and networking experiences to producer/songwriters from across the country.

We encourage applications from individuals who have been historically underrepresented in these spaces and who remain so today, including women, gender fluid, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people.

Sessions and workshops will take place both virtually and in person. The in-person residency will include a comprehensive program of development and networking opportunities in Toronto from June 5-11, 2023.

To qualify, candidates must be:

A mid-tier working producer/songwriter who has produced for others
Able to provide streaming links to 3 examples of works they have produced and co-written on
A Canadian resident (and able to provide proof of residency)
Available to be in Toronto in-person from June 5-11, 2023

Applications will be accepted online until Wednesday, March 15, 2023, and can be submitted either by the candidate directly, or on behalf of a candidate (as long as you’ve confirmed that the candidate is interested and able to participate in all aspects of the program).

Studio Watch 2023: Emerging Artist Exhibition Call for Submission ⏱️

The Beaverbrook Art Gallery is calling for submissions for the Studio Watch 2023: Emerging Artist Exhibition.

This dynamic series provides New Brunswick artists in the early stages of their career with the opportunity for a solo exhibition, the publication of an exhibition brochure, and the purchase of a work of art for the permanent collection of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.

Studio Watch 2023: Emerging Artist Exhibition will be held at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery from October 21, 2023 to June 2024.

To be eligible, the artist must:

Reside and produce art in New Brunswick. Consideration will also be given to New Brunswick residents who are attending higher education programs or conducting temporary projects outside of the province.
Have at least three years experience in making art.
Not yet have had a solo exhibition in a major public gallery or museum.
Have a body of work ready for exhibition in October 2023.

Each submission package must contain the following:

Curriculum vitae.
Artist statement of 450 words.
Five digital image samples of artwork.

Queer Tides: Call for Submissions 🌊

Galerie Sans Nom is seeking submissions for Queer Tides, a video series to be installed in Aberdeen Cultural Centre November 2023, with the possibility of a screening in collaboration with environmental advocacy focused community partners.

Queer Tides

Inspired by the mudflats of the Petitcodiac river and greater Bay of Fundy region, Queer Tides aims to frame coastal and intertidal zones as a queer space, exploring intersecting identities, the relationship between tourism and self-representation, and climate emergency through video. By bridging hollow binaries: ocean and land, grief and awe, documentary and folktale, the program will speak to the role of both uncertainty and enchantment in an environmental context.

This call is open to proposed, in-progress, and completed works by artists of all identities and stages of their careers. Galerie Sans Nom is dedicated to both compensating artists (using IMAA fee schedule as a guide when presenting media artworks) and accessible process. From Harm to Harmony 2023: Call to Artists 🌿

Are you interested in leading a values-driven group of creative activists to explore how art can impact social change around clean energy, energy affordability and energy poverty?

Are you a New Brunswick-based, mid-career community-engaged artist or artist team, passionate about climate justice, who would benefit from being mentored by a senior community-engaged artist?

If so, the Conservation Council of New Brunswick invites you to contribute your passions and talents to this creative collaboration.

Since 2020, the Conservation Council of New Brunswick’s Harm to Harmony program has connected New Brunswick artists of all levels and backgrounds to help express participants’ feelings about climate change and environmental issues. Led by environmental artist Juliana Bedoya and co-facilitated by musician/writer/Instruments of Change Executive Director, Laura Barron, this highly impactful climate action art program engages the public to raise awareness about these challenges, advocates for solutions, and inspires behaviour change. Committed to fostering local leadership, H2H is now excited to invite two new New Brunswick-based artists/or artist teams (mediums listed below) to lead and facilitate climate action community-engaged art projects of their own, under the mentorship of Juliana and Laura.

We look forward to hearing from candidates who represent the broad range of our sector including (but not limited to) those who are Indigenous, Black, People of Colour, LGBTQ2+, and of mixed abilities.

Compensation: Mentees will receive $4,800 for 4 months of community-engaged residency and mentorship, which includes 120 contract hours, as well as up to $1,000 ( with receipts) for materials.

If you’re interested in becoming a mentee of our Harm to Harmony mentorship program, here’s what you need to know:

Must be a mid-career professional artist residing and eligible to work in New Brunswick.
Preference will be given to artists who have existing relationships with community groups eager to participate in a climate action art project.
Will receive the support of their mentor through weekly 1-hour sessions and shared resources/tools.
Will design, facilitate and deliver a 4-month project from March-July.
Will work in collaboration with our manager of citizens’ engagement, Danielle Smith, to develop a project aligned with the organization’s objectives.
Will develop an outreach strategy to engage people in their community with a range of artistic skill levels (from curious to committed to professional), and a shared desire to impact social and environmental change, in order to enrich participants’ perspectives and practices.
Lead a series of group sessions (in-person, virtual, or a combination of both) throughout the project period.
Create a project curriculum and plan which will culminate in a final exhibition, performance, or showcase of some kind.
Integrate an evaluation process that can be embedded into the creative work itself, to include in a final report.

Sobey Art Award 2023 🏆

Nominations are now open for the 2023 Sobey Art Award. Nominators have until 8 p.m. EST Friday, March 10, 2023, to submit their applications.

With a total of $400,000 in prize money to contemporary visual artists, the Sobey Art Award’s mission is to champion and propel the careers of visual artists of all ages from across Canada onto the national and international stages.

The overall winner is given $100,000, $25,000 is granted to each of the shortlisted artists, and $10,000 is given to the remaining 20 long-listed artists. In addition, the five shortlisted artists will be featured in an exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada (NGC), with the winner announced at an evening ceremony this fall. Last year’s winner, representing the Prairies and North region, was Divya Mehra.

An independent jury consisting of curators from Canada’s five regions—Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairies and North, and West Coast and Yukon—as well as an international juror, will oversee the selection process.

CBC New Indigenous Voices 📡

Applications are now open for CBC New Indigenous Voices, presented by the National Screen Institute.

CBC New Indigenous Voices is a full-time, 14-week training program for up to 10 Indigenous creators to learn the essential elements of working in the film, TV and digital media industries. Emerging Indigenous creators looking to explore career opportunities and gain hands-on experience are encouraged to apply.

This year, applicant eligibility has been expanded to include Indigenous creators at any age over 18. There is no fee to apply, and participants receive minimum wage throughout the entire program.

CBC New Indigenous Voices training will be delivered in-person in Winnipeg, providing participants with a fully immersive experience, the opportunity to work on the production of a short film and an internship placement. Travel and accommodation support is provided for participants 30 kilometres or more outside of Winnipeg.

Third Watch: Call for Submissions 🌘

Third Watch is a festival of digital video works, and a pilot project as a part of THIRD SHIFT programming. It will take place in Saint John, NB on August 19, 2023. Third Watch aims to celebrate audio-visual content that is exploratory, challenging, and critical in nature. We encourage work that may not be commercially viable, or suitable for an installation as a part of THIRD SHIFT. Submissions must be under 15 minutes in length. Content may be narrative, documentary, experimental, or anything in between. If you can project it, we can select it!

Fredericton Summer Artist in Residence Program 2023 ☀️

February 2023 – The fifth annual City of Fredericton Summer Artist-in-Residence program will take place this year in two locations – the Fredericton Botanic Garden at Odell Park, and Killarney Lake Park. The City is inviting artists to submit proposals for a residency at either location during July or August. Residency periods are for two weeks with a new option this summer for a one-month residency, each with a stipend of $500 per week. Accommodations are not provided.

The program provides a unique opportunity for artists to move their studio outdoors into the natural surroundings of Killarney Lake’s wooded recreational park on the northside, or in the community-run Botanic Garden adjacent to Odell Park on the southside. Both locations are open and free to the public.

Artists are required to engage with park and garden users daily on site, and with the broader community through online activities. Artists will be active on social media with brief daily updates on their residency as well as occasional, in-depth activities such as a demo, artist talk, or workshop. Selected artists are free to move throughout the park or garden as part of their creative process and will be provided with portable lawn signs which will indicate that they are the ‘Artist in Residence’.

This residency is open to all artists working in any medium, however preference will be given to work that is conducive to community engagement. The artist is expected to be in residence Monday to Friday, for 6-8 hours daily.

Contact East Showcase Applications Open 🌟

Contact East is an annual performing arts booking conference hosted by the Atlantic Presenters Association. The event brings performing arts presenters, managers, and agents together to see artist performances showcasing a diverse range of artistic genres, including but not limited to music, cabaret, dance, disability arts, circus arts, comedy, youth-oriented programming, and cultural performances.

This year, Contact East will take place in Woody Point, Newfoundland from Thursday, September 20 to Sunday, September 24 offering artist showcases and pitch sessions, professional development sessions, and numerous opportunities for presenters, artists, agents and managers to network and discuss booking opportunities.

Artists should be prepared to present a performance, or excerpt of a full length piece of work, approximately 15 minutes in length. APA understands that some performances need more time to be fully experienced and will do their best to ensure that all work is properly represented.

Artists should be prepared to showcase the performance that was stated in the application. Any changes must be pre-approved as the selection committee selects final applications based on what was submitted.
