Fiddlehead Poetry Contest 📇

The Fiddlehead‘s 2022 Ralph Gustafson Poetry Contest is now open for submissions and we’re excited to announce that Dominique Bechard, shalan joudry, and Michael Prior are the talented poets who will be judging this year’s entries!

Dominique Béchard is the author of the poetry collection One Dog Town (Gaspereau Press, 2019) and the chapbook Infinity Mirror (Frog Hollow Press, 2022). She currently lives in Fredericton, on unceded Wolastoqiyik territory.

shalan joudry is a Mi’kmaw mother, poet, playwright, oral storyteller and ecologist. Using her theatrical background, shalan brings Mi’kmaw stories to a new generation of listeners, as well as recounting personally crafted narratives. The author of three books, her most recent book, Waking Ground (2020) was shortlisted for the J.M. Abraham Atlantic Poetry Award, the Maxine Tynes Nova Scotia Poetry Award, the 2021 Pat Lowther Memorial Award and the 2021 Indigenous Voices Award for Poetry in English. She lives in her home territory of Kespukwitk (southwest Nova Scotia) with her family in their community of L’sətkuk (Bear River First Nation).

Michael Prior is the author of two books of poems: Burning Province (McClelland & Stewart, 2020), which won the Canada-Japan Literary Award and the BC & Yukon Book Prizes’ Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize, and Model Disciple (Véhicule Press, 2016), which was named one of the best books of the year by the CBC. Prior was a 2021-2022 Cullman Center Fellow at the New York Public Library and is currently a 2021-2023 Jerome Hill Artist Fellow with the Jerome Foundation. His poems have appeared in Poetry, The New Republic, the Kenyon Review, Narrative Magazine, PN Review, the Academy of American Poets’ Poem-A-Day series, and elsewhere.

2023 Call for Strathbutler Nominations 📣

2023 Call for Strathbutler Nominations

The $25,000 Strathbutler Award $25,000 is one of Canada’s most lucrative and prestigious visual arts awards. Available uniquely to New Brunswick visual artists, the Strathbutler is a recognition of an individual New Brunswick artist’s accomplishments and impact. This award is given biennially by the privately funded Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation (SHMF) upon the recommendation of a qualified independent jury.

The SHMF Board of Directors calls on New Brunswickers to honour artists of distinction through a nomination process from December 1st, 2022 through March 15th, 2023. In presenting a candidate, nominators honour and celebrate visual artists who have enriched the cultural life of New Brunswick.

Strathbutler Award recipients are part of New Brunswick’s diverse cultural legacy. Since 1991, Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation has recognized exceptional New Brunswick artists with this distinction.

Completed nominations for 2023 Strathbutler Award, (including all supporting material) must be postmarked on or before the deadline of March 15, 2023. Late or incomplete nominations will not be accepted. The Foundation can not accept nominations by fax or email.

AX Call for Workshop Proposals 📝

AX is seeking proposals for the 2023 workshop season. Please submit your workshop proposal for consideration by December 31, 2022.

Call for workshop proposals

AX offers workshops in various disciplines, including visual arts, ceramics, fine crafts, and writing.

Workshop formats can be flexible. For example, workshops may be single half-day or full-day classes, after-school programs, week-long March Break (for youth) or summer workshops, or 4-6 consecutive weeks of 1 ½ hr – 3 hr sessions, as your workshop requires.

AX can work with you to help determine a suitable time and fee schedule, and once a proposal has been accepted, AX helps publicize the event. We also manage registration and fee collection from participants.

AX hosts approximately 20-25 workshops per year, and an independent, volunteer committee meets every few months to review proposals. If you wish your workshop to be considered in the next review, please submit your proposal by December 31, 2022.

Call for Submissions: UNB Art Centre’s Reflections 💧

The UNB Art Centre invites New Brunswick artists in any medium to submit work for an upcoming exhibit entitled Reflections. This exhibit is being developed for World Water Day, opening March 22, 2023, and running through April 28, 2023.

March 22 has been designated World Water Day by the United Nations as part of an international campaign to focus attention on the importance of our most precious resource — water.

Please include a CV, artist statement, link to website and images of your submission to artcntr@unb.ca. Artists may submit more than 1 image/media for consideration. Artists will receive an exhibition fee in accordance with CARFAC standard rates if work(s) are selected.

In support of this important work, we facilitate programs that foster inclusive community engaged public art practices, build the capacity of underrepresented artists, and demonstrate how public art can help reimagine equitably designed cities.

We are thrilled to launch the 2023 CreateSpace Public Art Forum, a digital forum that will virtually convene 50 participants who identify as Black, Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit and Métis), racialized, rural and/or youth with disabilities and between the ages of 18-25. CreateSpace Public Art Forum runs from January 9-29, 2023. This forum will foster connections, build understanding across geographies and cultures, as well as provide emerging equity-seeking participants with the skills, relationships and support needed to develop public art practices.”

Re:Flux Festival Call for Submissions 📣

The call for submissions for the 18th edition of RE: FLUX is divided into three parts:

1. LIVE PERFORMANCES (like, in person!)
2. RADIO RE: FLUX (a Podcast project)

About Radiant Rural Halls

this town is small (TTIS) artist-run centre is seeking proposals for the second edition of Radiant Rural Halls. This project will consist of a series of contemporary art projects and events presented at rural community halls in PEI. The presentations will take place between February and April 2023, with exact dates and venues to be confirmed. Radiance refers to emanating light, warmth, and joy. We see community halls themselves as having a radiant quality and we are seeking works that engage with this idea, as well as with the liveliness and histories of the halls and their surrounding communities.

We encourage proposals in artistic mediums such as installation, media arts, and performance. Proposals for participatory projects and events such as workshops, demonstrations, presentations, and storytelling are also highly encouraged. A printed publication featuring original writing and documentation will be created as an extension of the project.

About Community Halls

Selected works will be paired with the most appropriate community hall. For example, if a hall has a theatre space with a projector and sound system, a project that includes a performance with projections/sound would be prioritized. Community halls typically have limited wall space and capacity for exhibiting two-dimensional works. However, they are excellent gathering spaces and often have large meeting rooms, work tables and seating, theatres and/or stages, audio-visual equipment, and kitchens. Artists are encouraged to propose projects that make use of these unique facilities. To learn more about PEI’s network of community halls, visit the Association of Rural Community Halls (ARCH PEI).

Eligibility

Professional artists residing in Canada are eligible to apply, and artists with connections to rural communities will be prioritized. We consider a professional artist to meet a combination of the following criteria (as defined by the Canada Council of the Arts): have specialized training in their artistic field (not necessarily in academic institutions); be recognized as a professional by their peers (artists working in the same artistic tradition); be committed to devoting more time to artistic activity, if possible financially; and have a history of public presentation or publication.

Submissions will be reviewed by a jury of professional artists and community representatives and scored based on the following criteria: artistic and thematic merit, achievability/feasibility, and impact.

CARFAC Maritimes Call to Members: 2022 Holiday Greeting Card ❄️

Since 2018, CARFAC Maritimes members have been invited to submit an artwork for consideration for the annual virtual CARFAC Maritimes Holiday Card. A $50 copyright reproduction fee will be paid for use of the selected image. As well, Duncan L. MacDonald, CPA in Fredericton will also be offering a $250 royalty fee AND an additional $500 fee to create an e-card for his business!

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

One submission per artist (CARFAC Maritimes members only)
Open to all two-dimensional media.
Please submit by email, subject “Holiday greeting card” to anna.rail@carfacmaritimes.org with the following information:

Name and current address of the artist.

Opportunity for Two Wabanaki Artists 🏒

Immediate opportunity for two Wabanaki artists.

Call for expressions of interest, World Junior Player of the Game program.

The 2023 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Hockey Championship will be hosted in Halifax, NS and Moncton, NB from December 26, 2022, through January 5, 2023.

For each of the 31 World Jr gams, the player of the game for each team will be presented with a commemorative hockey stick.

There will be a rapid turnaround on this project, with artists selected by November 11 and artwork due no later than November 22.

Mawi’Art is working with IIHF on this project and invites Wabanaki artists to send us an expression of interest in the project by November 7. Two artists will be selected to design a motif which will be stenciled onto the blades of 150 hockey sticks and presented to the players during the tournament.

Expressions of interest should include a short statement by the artist about your interest in the project and any connnection you have had with the game of hockey, up to 5 photographs of your art work.

Collaborative Wabanakiyik Artists and TNB

Theatre New Brunswick invites New Brunswick-based Indigenous artists to submit proposals for Collaborative: Wabanakiyik Artists and TNB – a new Indigenous led artist development program from Theatre New Brunswick.

Focusing on the development of performance-based projects (including theatre, dance, music, comedy, and storytelling) this artist residency initiative will provide project and career development resources and public performance opportunities to New Brunswick-based Indigenous artists with mentorship from Wolastoqiyik Indigenous Artist Natalie Sappier.

Using theatre as a tool to share stories, explore ideas, to create and to play, our aim with this project is to reinterpret our theatre’s role as a forum for sharing stories by supporting the development of new and emerging Indigenous artists from across our province and from the 15 First Nations that exist within our provincial borders.

Overview
Tell us your idea. What are you working on? What are your goals for you project? What do you want to create? Successful artists will receive an $5000 honorarium for creative residencies taking place between February and July 2023. Theatre New Brunswick will also provide a modest budget for travel and accommodations, artist per diems, and elder consultation while in residence. Theatre New Brunswick acknowledges that it carries out its work on the traditional unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik, Mi’kmaq and Peskotomuhkati peoples. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which these nations first signed with the British Crown in 1726. The treaties did not deal with the surrender of lands and resources, but in fact recognized Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations.

artsnb Career Development Program Deadline: November 1, 2022

artsnb’s Career Development program is designed to recognize and encourage arts professionals who have demonstrated exceptional artistic talent and potential, and who are pursuing a career in the arts.

The program is divided in four components:

The Arts by Invitation component is for assistance to present work by invitation in established arts events.
The Artist in Residence component is for assistance for participation in residency opportunities of three (3) months and less. The artists in residence are to contribute to the promotion and understanding of the arts by means of the artists’ contact with the clientele of the establishments.
The Professional Development component is for assistance for professional development scholarships for studies and mentorships.
The Professionalization and Promotion component is designed to assist artists to produce tools related to the promotion of the artist’s work and career with a view to broadening the dissemination network for their work and diversifying their sources for funding.

Perspective: Call for Submissions 🩰

Perspective: an evening of dance, music, and discussion

The PERSPECTIVE series is unique in New Brunswick. Performances are open to the public, and audience members are treated to an intimate evening of dance works in progress. They hear directly from choreographers and musicians about the creation process, and are then given an opportunity to share their thoughts on each work.

Artists receive valuable and immediate audience feedback. These perspectives help to further develop the work for the artists.

Call for Applications Now Open!

Accepting applications from dance artists that have works currently in development.
Performance date: December 10, 2022 at the BMO Studio Theatre in Saint John, New Brunswick.
