Salt Spring National Art Prize 🎨

Deadline for entry: May 31

The Salt Spring National Art Prize (SSNAP) is a biennial juried open competition focused on Canadian contemporary visual arts. Approximately fifty finalists are selected for the exhibition by an independent national jury. They invite all Canadian artists whose work exemplifies originality, quality, integrity, and creativity to submit work for consideration.

Imago Bursary 🎨

Upcoming deadline to apply for a bursary from Imago- May 15

Imago is focused on promoting and supporting young artists. Since 1996, Imago offers an annual bursary to a candidate who has earned their Bachelors in Visual Arts from Mount Allison University or l’Université de Moncton within the past five (5) years.  This grant includes a one-year membership, 500$ in materials and a chance to hone their technical skills and develop their practice in New Brunswick. At the end of the project, the recipient holds a show at the Galerie Sans Nom and receives a CARFAC artist fee. This solo show takes place in the fall of the following year.

Visual Arts News Call for Submissions Fall 2023 📣

Upcoming: an open call for the Fall 2023 issue of Visual Arts News. We’re curious to hear from writers, artists and critics in order to expand, respond and deepen conversations inspired by the artistic vision of emerging and established artists who are pushing the boundaries of art and culture in the Atlantic. For our open call, we are seeking pitches for features, profiles and exhibition reviews, and prioritize work that pushes back against white supremacy and colonialism because we are committed to supporting anti-oppression, anti-racism, Indigenous sovereignty, Black liberation, and sexual and gender diversity.

Auditions for Bard in the Barracks 🎭

Auditions for Bard in the Barracks: Much Ado About Nothing and Coriolanus, May 9th & 10th.

Open auditions will be held on May 9th and 10th for the Bard in the Barracks productions of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, to be directed by Tilly Jackson and performed in Odell Park, and Coriolanus, to be directed by Len Falkenstein and performed in downtown Fredericton. The plays will be performed in repertory and will collectively run from June 23-July 9, with exact performance dates for each play still to be determined. The plays will be rehearsed intensively (mainly evening hours) beginning in mid-May.

 

Much Ado About Nothing and Coriolanus Audition Notice

 

Roles are available for actors of a variety of ages, and casting of several roles will be gender fluid. Auditions will take place at Memorial Hall, UNB from 7:30-10:00 PM each of Tuesday, May 9, and Wednesday, May 10. Those auditioning are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the plays beforehand. Auditions will consist of readings from the plays. Prepared monologues may also be performed but are not required.

To book an audition, please email tilly.jackson48@gmail.com, indicating your availability for the audition dates and any preference for date/time. Ideally, you should be prepared to be on hand up to an hour for your audition. Actors may be cast in one or both plays (if willing) and may indicate a preference of play (if any) when booking their audition or on arrival.
Please email us also at the same address if you are interested in auditioning but unable to attend either of the audition dates. Expressions of interest from persons who would like to assist with the productions in a musical or technical/crew capacity are also welcome. All members of the company will receive honorariums for their work on the productions.

If necessary, call backs will take place on Monday, May. 15th from 6 – 8 pm.
The show will be staged November. 22nd to 25th, with weekly rehearsals starting in late August.
There are 9 characters to cast + 3 supporting roles who will play various minor characters.
We are looking for acting and singing ability. Sides will be provided, but if you have a preferred monologue bring it along! Choose your song to sing! (anything at all but remember to show us your range)

Theatre New Brunswick General Auditions 🎭

Theatre New Brunswick will be holding general auditions in Fredericton, NB on May 18 & 19, 2023 at the Open Space Theatre.

Theatre New Brunswick is located and operates on the traditional unceeded territory of the Wolastoqiyik, Mi’kmaq and Peskotomuhkati peoples.

Priority will be given to Equity artists, and they will be seen first at all auditions.  Due to the uncertainty around future public health measures and travel restrictions, at this time we are seeking artists born or based in New Brunswick, as well as artists based in Atlantic Canada.

Members of the visual arts, literary arts and performing arts communities: nominate an artist for the prestigious Lieutenant-Governor’s Awards for High Achievement in the Arts – and help the New Brunswick Arts Board promote artistic excellence. The nomination period is open!

Nominations are open for the 2024 Lieutenant Governor's Awards.

The Lieutenant-Governor’s Awards for High Achievement in the Arts are designed to recognize the outstanding contribution of New Brunswick artists.

One award of $20,000 may be conferred in each of the following four (4) categories:

  • Visual Arts Award: including architecture, fine craft, media arts and photography
  • Performing Arts Award: including dance, music and theatre
  • Literary Arts Award*: including literary translation, literary performance, spoken word and storytelling
  • *NEW* Indigenous Artist Award: including visual arts: architecture, fine craft, media arts and photography; performing arts: dance, music and theatre; and literary arts: literary translation, literary performance, spoken word and storytelling

* Please note that awards in Literary Arts alternate between French and English from year to year. This year (2023), nominations in English language literary arts will be considered.

Third Shift Seeks Festival Associate 🌛

Third Space Gallery is seeking to fill the position of THIRD SHIFT Festival Associate in May 2023. The successful candidate will work closely with staff and volunteers of Third Space Gallery to present THIRD SHIFT Contemporary Arts Festival in Saint John, New Brunswick in August 2023 and will assist with Third Space programming throughout the Spring and Summer months. The successful candidate will work with the current Executive Director at USTATION on Prince William St. from May to September 2023, with opportunities of occasional remote work throughout the duration of the position.

Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts: Up to eight awards are distributed every year: six awards recognize artistic achievements, one award recognizes significant contributions to fine crafts (Saidye Bronfman Award) and one award recognizes an outstanding contribution to contemporary visual arts, media arts or fine craft.

Value: Up to eight awards of $25,000 each
How to nominate: Candidates are nominated by specialists from Canada in visual arts, media arts or fine craft through an individual, a group of co-nominators, or the representative of an organization.

Fostering Diversity: Developing Policy for Inclusion

This course is a starting point for your inclusion efforts – you will be equipped with an understanding of key terms related to diversity and with specific tactics to create more inclusive policies for your organization. As a leader in an arts and cultural organization, you know that fostering diversity is an important part of creating an inclusive and productive environment. Despite good intentions, it can be very challenging and overwhelming to get started.

Fostering Diversity: Developing Policy for Inclusion will allow you to reflect and challenge your current beliefs, while moving your organization towards inclusivity.

  • Understanding unconscious bias, equity versus inclusion (and other important terms)
  • The business case for diversity
  • Self-reflection
  • Setting policy goals and objectives
  • Key components of a diversity policy

The course is delivered online for two weeks in a hybrid synchronous and asynchronous format, combining self-paced independent work with interactive seminar and discussion opportunities. There are deadlines for readings and exercises.

The Director of the Art Gallery is responsible for providing strategic leadership to the Art Gallery and the campus community through their specialized knowledge of visual art. Reporting to the Dean of Arts and Science, the Director has overall responsibility for the Gallery operation, including management of the budget; hiring, training, and full supervision of personnel; maintenance of Gallery facilities; and oversight and care of the University’s permanent collection. The Director plans and implements the annual program of exhibitions, publications, and special events, and secures external funding to support these initiatives. They also consult and collaborate with the internal university community, as well as with external individuals and groups to support the mission of the Gallery and the University. The Director develops and enacts Gallery-specific policies, with the approval of the Board of Governors.
