Sackville Festival of Early Music 2017

The Sackville Festival of Early Music is an annual festival in Sackville New Brunswick that is held each September. The Festival offers outstanding musical  experiences to audiences in the Tantramar region through performance, educational outreach, master class instruction, and amateur workshops. Our annual series of early music performances showcases Canadian and American musicians of international repute.

CONCERTS

Friday Sept 22, 2017, 7:30pm, Brunton Auditorium: ¡Sacabuche!, directed by Linda Pearse, will perform Hidden Treasures: The Austrian Habsburgs and the Kroměříž Archive featuring Vicki St. Pierre (contralto). The rich tradition of music-making in Austria and Czech lands during the seventeenth century combines an Italianate style with local music traditions and flavors. This unique program brings beautiful yet unknown and lesser-known works housed in the archives of the Kroměříž library in the Czech Republic to the stage.

Saturday Sept 23, 2017, 7:30pm, Brunton Auditorium: Toronto ensemble, I Furiosi will perform the programme, Introduction to the Body. Everyone has a favourite body part – if not their own, then someone else’s.  The concert starts at the top, and works its way down as they celebrate the various naughty and not-so-naughty bits.

Sunday, Sept 24, 2017, 3pm, Brunton Auditorium: The Toronto Consort, under the direction of David Fallis, will perform Shakespeare’s Songbook in Sackville Sun Sept 24 @ 3pm. “If music be the food of love, play on!” So say we all, but just what music did Shakespeare have in mind when he penned those famous lines? The Toronto Consort, Canada’s leading virtuosi of English Renaissance music, has pored over Shakespeare’s works to find many magical points

where early music and the world’s greatest writer meet. With everyone from movie stars (Cate Blanchett) to rock stars (Sting) showing interest in Elizabethan England, this program opens a popular world to contemporary audiences. This fully scripted show features dances, fantasias and vocal works, performed with lute, viola da gamba, recorders, harpsichord, hurdy-gurdy,

percussion and voices.

OUTREACH

1) Music Department Colloquium, WEDNESDAY September 20, 4 p.m.

Linda Pearse (Music), Martine Jomphe (MtA music student), Karen Bamford (English), and Toni Roberts (Sociology) join together to present on The Kroměříž Archive – Dusting off the Manuscripts, The Social Construction and Production of the Body, and Musical Shakespeare. These concise presentations will provide context for three Sackville Festival of Early concerts taking place Sept 22-24, 2017. Admission is free to this event, all are welcome.

2) Panel Discussion on The Body and Music: FRIDAY September 22, Brunton Auditorium 4 p.m. Members of the highly-respected Canadian early music ensemble I Furiosi, Gabrielle McLaughlin and Julia Wedman, join with Mount A faculty members Vicki St. Pierre, Toni Roberts, and Fiona Black (chair) for an interdisciplinary discussion on the body in music, religion, and society in preparation for I Furiosi’s concert, Introduction to the Body. http://www.ifuriosi.com/

3) Tantramar Seniors’ College – Linda Pearse will offer two lectures on the process of early music research that leads to publication and performance for the Tantramar Seniors’ College leading up to the Festival weekend. September 14 and September 21@ 1 p.m. in the Choral Room, MYB Conservatory Room 205.

Admission is free to this event; the talk is open to the public.

4) Education Concerts, September 19-21

The Toronto Consort, under the direction of David Fallis, will perform five educational outreach concerts at regional schools and at the Drew Nursing Home aimed at enhancing musical appreciation of Shakespeare for all. These concerts are closed to the general public.
