Amy Ash Workshop: Collective Regrowth and Other Possibilities 🌼

April 22, 2023 @ 1:00 pm 3:00 pm

Amy Ash’s deeply collaborative art Perennial Bodies: Collective Regrowth and Other Possibilities is about gathering to share energy and experience, seeding ideas and positive action.

Amy Ash at work

What can we learn from the kinship of tangled roots and whispering rhizomes, the sharing of re-sources for mutual flourishing, and the vibrant re-emergence after a long winter of rest?

A curiosity-driven event, we will come together to make and document experimental artworks that engage bodies fun, safe, and unusual ways. Encircling ideas of care, natural cycles, and connectivity with the more-than-human world, this workshop will be organized less like a class and more like a collaborative art-lab.

Let’s create a safe space for play, absurdity, deep attention, and contemplation, while imagining a future where we flourish in our understanding that we are not just in the world, but of it.
If we can listen to the world deeply enough, with our whole bodies, maybe we could seep past the divisions we’ve made and become a collective body, a super-organism of sensation.

Open to all levels of art-making experience, from pro to never-crafted-before —prompts, guidance, and support will be available whenever needed.

Purdy Tong works in the studio

Artist in Residence: Pudy Tong 🗞️

April 13, 2023 @ 5:00 pm 7:00 pm

Artist in Residence: Pudy Tong

Pudy Tong is in residence at Imago Artist-Run Print Studio from April 2nd to April 16th 2023. Join us Thursday, April 13th from 5 to 7 pm for a presentation of his work. The presentation will begin at 5:30 pm.

Purdy Tong works in the studio

Pudy Tong’s (he/him) memories of his immigrant childhood are punctuated by the images of large stacks of Chinese newspapers landing on his family’s doorstep every two weeks, shipped in from Vancouver to a small rural town in British Columbia. His print-based art practice draws on elements from journalism as the subject through which our experience of contemporary, media-saturated society is refracted, reinterpreted and re-imagined.

He is spending his time at Imago experimenting with how to draw/write text in abstraction, developing a system to randomize newspaper front page layouts, all the while resisting the temptation to just prompt Artificial Intelligence to do the work. He received his BFA from the University of British Columbia Okanagan and an MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University. He works out of Open Studio in Toronto and spends just a little too much time scrolling Doge Social (Twitter).

Camille-Zoé Valcourt-Synnott (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist from Quebec (QC), now based in K’jipuktuk (Halifax, NS). She graduated with a BFA (Print Media) from Concordia University in 2018 and an MFA from NSCAD University in 2020.

Her performances reflect on the value of the artist’s work, perceptions of productivity and where life and art meet. Referencing everyday tasks, (un)remunerated work and invisible labor, her practice points to the flaws already present within the arts but that are, too often, not acknowledged. She is interested in the intersections between labor, gender and class dynamics, and how they all play a part in making certain audiences feel welcome in different art spaces. Her performance and text-based work has been shown in artist-run centers and galleries across Canada.

Atlantic Vernacular is an online exhibition of contemporary craft paired with poetry of Atlantic Canada. Voices of the region include those of our first nations, and multiple mother tongues represented by participating artists and poets. This region is a den of material experimentation, integration of work with one’s environment, and honest confrontation with the challenges of making work in a conservative region of the country. After artworks were selected for exhibition, regional poets were invited to interpret the works through their own medium of verse.

Craft NB would also like to thank their funders: the Province of New Brunswick and the Canada Council for the Arts for their contributions to this special project.

AX is pleased to welcome “Pinned” by Metal Six to the gallery. “Pinned” features the work of metalsmiths Brigitte Clavette, Kristyn Cooper, Kristen Bishop, Audrée St-Amour, and Erica Stanley, members of the women’s metal collective, Metal Six.

Metal Six’s new body of work is centred around the theme of pins, brooches, and fasteners. These objects may be wearable, as in traditional brooches, kilt pins, penannular, cloak pins, hat pins, or they may be instruments to pin things down or to the wall.

Advanced Studio Practice Guest Lecture Series

NBCCD Guest Lecture Series: Judie Acquin-Miksovsky 🎙

December 8, 2022 @ 12:00 pm 1:00 pm

THURSDAYS, 12 PM-1 PM ADT TIME ZONE (GMT-3)

December 8th: Judie Acquin-Miksovsky

This year, Advanced Studio Practice’s Guest Lecture Series is partnering with the Beaverbrook Art Gallery to celebrate local artisans.

Advanced Studio Practice Guest Lecture Series

Hosted every Thursday from 12pm to 1pm, guest speakers will deliver an hour-long lecture, speaking to their practice, process, and life as a working artist.

The Guest Lecture Series models successful contemporary practice to NBCCD students. It informs, inspires, and ignites art and design dialogue and engagement within the local arts community.

The ASP Guest Lecture Series is hosted by the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design’s Advanced Studio Practice certificate program each year and is organized, in part, by its students, as well as being part of the program’s curriculum. It brings artists from across New Brunswick to speak to NBCCD students and the greater public.

Advanced Studio Practice students focus on self-directed studio work, in addition to implementing a professional career plan through networking, mentorship, pop-up shows, exhibitions, wholesale opportunities, and more. Students will acquire business skills and enhanced studio practice to launch into self-employment or a successful career in the creative cultural sector.

In 2022, the guest lectures will return to an in-person format allowing the community to gather and engage. Those who attend the lecture will gain free access to the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and its collections afterwards.

The ASP Guest Lecture Series focuses on New Brunswick and provides:

  • A platform for the presentation and advancement of professional artists, designers, and fine craft practitioners.
  • A time for dialogue about ideas and opportunities in the fields of contemporary practice.
  • A celebration of creative and cultural riches that we hold in Atlantic Canada.

These noon-hour sessions celebrate the creative, cultural, and academic achievements of artists, designers, and fine craft practitioners.

For further information or to receive updates, please contact: Jean.Rooney@gnb.ca

The series is free and open to the public.
