ROMÉO SAVOIE: CERA ALBA
May 31, 2017 - June 30, 2017
Galerie d’art Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen presents an exhibition of works by Roméo Savoie titled CERA ALBA: L’alliage de l’éphémère à l’éternel. In this exhibition, curator Paul Édouard Bourque brings together works that challenge notions on painting. The opening and a presentation by the curator will be held on Wednesday, May 31 at 5 PM. The artist will also be present.
CERA ALBA examines the use of found objects and natural materials in the work of Acadian painter Roméo Savoie, and how these added elements heighten meaning in the paintings. The works selected by the curator focuses on the role of the object integrated in a painted surface, and strives to define the esthetic strategies and techniques utilised by Savoie over a period that bridges the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
Roméo Savoie was born in Moncton, New Brunswick, in 1928. He holds a BA from College Saint-Joseph in Memramcook (1950), a degree in Architecture from the École des beaux-arts de Montréal (1956) and a Master’s Degree in Plastic Arts from UQAM (1988). Since 1971, Savoie has had more than 30 solo exhibitions, including a retrospective at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in the spring of 2006 organized in partnership with Galerie d’art Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen. Savoie’s work is held in the collections of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Musée national des beaux-arts de Québec, the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris, the Université de Moncton, the University of New Brunswick and many private collections.
The exhibition will be on show until July 30 2017. Admission is free and open to all.
Galerie d’art Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen of l’Université de Moncton is supported by the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture of New Brunswick.
