GOLEM – A billingual sci-fi play by Satellite Theatre, created in collaboration with Tutta Musica, on tour in New Brunswick

What parent has never thought this strange, horrible, pretentious phrase? What are the forces that unite or tear apart a creator and his creation? Do we even really master our own bodies? A modern, multidisciplinary artwork, Golem is a theatrical sci-fi performance presented in an unlikely part in the city. Three actor/dancers, supported by a quartet of unsettling classical musicians, tell a tale worthy of Frankenstein’s monster. Intertwining ancestral and contemporary ideas, GOLEM takes the themes of legacy, conception and manipulation and adds to them those of artificial intelligence, cyborgs and evolution. At once a smartphone revealing event and a secret society ritual, GOLEM is an exploration of possible futurs which seem more and more inevitable.

This singular work is the fruit of a strong collaboration between artists ailing from the French and English communities of Moncton and Fredericton. Matthieu Girard having collaborated as an actor on Les Trois Mousquetaires Plomberie writes a show conceptualized and directed by Marc-André Charron. Actor/ creators Bianca Richard, Jalianne Li et Yves Arseneault are the flamboyant trio which we are presenting to the audience. Denise Richard (costumes) Sylvain Ward (set design) propose an inviting, steam-punk esthetic and a proximity to the action seldom experienced. Happy to be collaborating with Tutta Musica’s musicians, composer Maxime Lemond, a.k.a Jertrude Battue, (Bouffe, Les Trois Mousquetaires Plomberie and «T» with Satellite Théâtre) brings his ambiant, hip-hop and lyrical approach, interpreted by David Scott on clarinet, Allain Arseneau on bassoon, Jeffrey Jones on viola and Joel Cormier on percussions. Luc Mills (lights) completes the artistic team with his mad scientist and tinkerer’s glee.

The companies

An avant-garde creation company recently moved to New Brunswick, Satellite Theatre, was founded in 2009 by acadian Mathieu Chouinard and québécois Marc-André Charron, both graduates of the Lecoq Theatre School in Paris and the London International School of performing Arts (United Kingdom). Having toured in the province extensively for the past eight years, the artistic directors moved the company to Moncton NB, from Montreal, QC this last July. Known for Mouving, Bouffe, Tréteau(x) and Les Trois Mousquetaires Plomberie, coproduced with the Théâtre populaire d’Acadie, the company has also created PAPAs and «T».

Throughout the country, Satellite is recognized for its dynamism; the physical, blazing and baroque style of its shows and for its capacity to regroup highly talented artists from multiple cultural backgrounds. Charron and Chouinard have become an integral part of the acadian cultural milieu, through their numerous nominations at the Éloize Prizes, as well as their work in the theatre community, most notably through their implication with the AAAPNB and teaching at Université de Moncton. The company leads local, national and international projects, including professional workshop programs, live show development and touring, all the while being involved in younger creator’s mentorship. Satellite has collaborated with organisations in Japan, France, Mexico, Chad and England and has toured the Canadian provinces extensively.

Tutta Musica consists of more than fifty musicians who are the Teaching Artists of Sistema New Brunswick – a highly successful province-wide program that offers school-age children an opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument in an orchestral setting. These talented men and women are graduates of some of the finest university and conservatory music programs in North and South America. When they are not teaching, they perform as a professional ensemble that offers its own unique take on all genres of music. The name Tutta Musica means “all music”, and strives to make live music more accessible, more engaging, and more relevant than ever before for New Brunswickers. The group recently completed a 10-show run of performing the score for Oliver! musical at the Capitol Theatre in Moncton, and last year, they performed the score for the Sound of Music musical. Tutta Musica also performed an original creation with comedian Marshall Button called the NB Symfunny Orchestra. It was a humorous take on music that was part of the Hubcap Comedy Festival. Tutta Musica is known for bringing an energizing and interactive dimension to musical shows that takes on all forms and types of musical arts – rock and roll, Acadian music, opera, fiddlers, folklore, South American Latin music, and more. Through this, the teachers and performers of Tutta Musica are enriching an already vibrant Atlantic Canadian arts and music scene.
