Pat Mercer was born in Suffolk, England, and came as a child to Canada with her family. She grew up in Montreal, and travelled back to Europe as soon as she could. She visited her parents in Bloomfield when she returned, where she met and married Chester; they built a small house and she promptly had three children: Sean, Jennifer and Ryan. They bought 100 acres in Summerfield, and homesteaded there for about 40 years. Taking care of her family was her first pleasure, but she also had a lot of creativity which is evident in her gardens at home and the beautiful quilts she made. Many years ago she decided that she also wanted to paint; she was very determined to learn all she could; she taught herself from books, workshops in Saint Andrews, and lots and lots of practice. She was one of the founders of the Artists’ Co-op in Sussex, and learned lots from working with other artists there. She would return from a workshop with renewed passion, and spent hours and hours “getting it right” on the canvas. Anyone lucky enough to have a painting of Pat’s will enjoy the combination of colour, texture and mystery that she was able to produce. Truly a great friend and a great lady.
