The UNB Art Centre presents Susana Reisman: “Standardizing Nature”

May 19, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

The UNB Art Centre is pleased to announce the opening of Standardizing Nature on May 19, 2017 by Toronto-based artist Susana Reisman. Ms. Reisman will be present at the opening to give a walking tour of the exhibit.

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Susana Reisman received her BA in Economics from Wellesley College in Boston in 1999 and then her MFA in Photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2005. She has exhibited extensively across Canada and in the United States and has completed several international residencies. She is currently based in Toronto where she runs Circuit Gallery, specializing in contemporary photography.

Reisman’s dual interest in art and economics coalesces in this exhibition. Through photography and sculpture, Standardizing Nature examines the lumber industry and the process by which forests are transformed into commodities.

“This project is really about encouraging people to question and understand the reasoning and decision-making behind the ‘shape’ of things,” says Reisman. “It is about a concern for the natural resources we harness from the earth and the form, function, and role they play in our everyday lives. Economies and industries are built around these decisions and they ‘reverberate’ outwards from the center like rings in the core of a tree. Those standards set the ‘tone’ for future generations and the kind of world we, and they, will live in.”

Standardizing Nature allows us to reflect on trees as living nature and reminds us of the origin of the ubiquitous sheet of plywood or two by four plank.

We invite you to join the artist for a walking tour of the exhibit at the opening on May 19 at 5 pm.

The UNB Art Centre is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. The galleries are open 9 am – 4 pm weekdays and for special events. Admission is free to members of the public. Everyone welcome!
