NBCCD 3D Digital Design Exhibit – January 27 Virtual Launch

Amid Level 3 restrictions in New Brunswick, a group of 3D Digital Design students and their instructors are pressing on. They’re creating artwork that will be printed and installed in the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design’s George Fry Gallery at 408 Queen Street and displayed virtually for the public between January 27 and February 25, with a virtual opening presentation at 4 p.m. (AST) on the 27th.
The exhibition is entitled “Debacle,” meaning a sudden and ignominious failure, something the instructors in the program describe as part of the learning process.
It’s what we often deal with often in striving for creative perfection, said the 3D Digital
Design team.
“What does perfection look like? Is it possible to achieve perfection?” asks Jamie
Bergin, 3D Digital Design instructor and head of the program.
The idea of perfection was the inspiration behind Debacle.
“The creative process normally involves uncertainty, problem-solving, and revision.
However, what happens when things really go wrong?” said Bergin. “Most of us have
found ourselves at the point where we feel that moving forward is impossible, that we
have so much doubt about ourselves there is no way for us to complete the task that
we face.”
“Sometimes the only way to fight that feeling of impending failure is to let go of the
idea of perfection. So, we want to celebrate all those incredible learning experiences
and the successes that come out of these ‘messes’ that happen during the creative
process. We celebrate having the courage to push through during times of self-
doubt,” said Bergin and her team.
Asked how the pandemic affected these second-year students in the final year of their
diploma, Bergin said, “I’m so incredibly proud of how everyone has stepped up.
These students, their whole entire studio experience has been during a pandemic. It’s
remarkable. It’s unbelievable. Nothing can stop them. They are the best students we
have ever had.”
The virtual exhibit, opening January 27 at 4 p.m., allows students to celebrate and
share this accomplishment with family, friends, and the wider community.
