Life is constant. It is always changing and challenging me, and I take this mindset into all of my work. It is the reason I use so many different materials, and use my chosen medium for self reflection. I am not the same person I was five years ago, but that doesn’t mean that I need to forget that person. In fact I want to attempt to understand that person, in order to help me understand my current self and shape who I want to be in the future.

The pieces in fortified are composed of small, weak segments of wire that I fused together over and over again. Eventually, what resulted were sizeable metal works; architectural, grand, and infinitely stronger structures. The strength of each piece is formed by the coming together of its weaker parts. fortified is about not being ashamed about one’s shortcomings, or what has broken our spirits in the past. It may not be an easy task, but the old adage is true: you can always pick up the pieces.

A message from Connexion ARC…

More than 80 people who attended the first Art Kitchen on December 5th, 2017, at the Picaroons Roundhouse, in Fredericton, NB. Guests were treated to a warming bowl of soup prepared by local chef, Robin Estey, and voted for one of four artist’s projects, based on presentations held throughout the evening.

The winner of the vote was announced as Kathryn Cronin, a jewellery student in her last year of the Advanced Studio Program at The New Brunswick College of Craft & Design (NBCCD).

Kathryn began her practice as a classically-trained jeweller. As the first recipient of an Art Kitchen grant, however, Kathryn has created a series of experimental and abstract metal pieces that she builds off of the body. Kathryn describes this new process as very sculptural, as she expands upon the structures piece by piece.

Regarding the development of her practice, she explains, “this is really just the beginning. I spent a year experimenting with self-reflective work, and now I’m finally starting to figure out where that is going.”

We can’t wait to see where Kathryn’s skillful and dedicated practice will take her. We are so pleased to welcome Kathryn Cronin and her intricate metal work to our space at Connexion ARC this spring.
