Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, 10th Anniversary of Shakespeare in the Park

Moncton’s Victoria Park will once again come alive with drama as Hubcity Theatre brings to life William Shakespeare’s tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, to mark the 10th anniversary of Shakespeare in the Park.
“Hubcity Theatre was looking for a way to mark our 10th production of Shakespeare in the Park, which ultimately led me to choose the Bard’s most popular play, Hamlet,” says director Mark McPhee.
The cast from across greater Moncton will recreate the tale of treachery and revenge, with some familiar faces along with actors new to Hubcity’s roster. The outdoor setting adds a level of complexity – thorough working with the available amount of light and changing weather conditions – when bringing a play to life.
“Bringing a 400-year-old text alive in a park is a challenge,” McPhee said. “However, I believe our interpretation will meet and exceed the expectations theatregoers possess about Elizabethan tragedy. The nature of Hamlet’s madness, his indecision, his genius, his love of acting, simply put, his entire character will be imprinted on audiences in a typically Shakespearean manner: continually challenging convention.”
The show will run at 6 p.m. on July 20, 21 and 22 (Thursday to Saturday) and July 28, 29 and 30 (Friday to Sunday). As usual, the show is free of charge but the non-profit, volunteer-based community theatre company accepts donations at each performance. Seating is limited, so the audience is advised to bring a chair, if possible.
