FAQ

What is the Selection Process?
Four applicants will be selected by a peer jury. Successful applicants will be notified of their application on November 27 via telephone. They will be invited to informally talk about their proposed project during a communal meal that generates independent funding to support artistic and curatorial development, called Art Kitchen.

Project proposals will be shared with patrons attending Art Kitchen. As part of the evening’s programming, participants will have 10 minutes to informally talk about their project, followed by a Q&A period. A projector will be provided, however a slide presentation is optional.

What is Art Kitchen?
Art Kitchen is a radically transparent and participatory approach to arts funding. Connexion ARC partners with local establishments and invites a guest chef to prepare a delicious soup using locally-sourced ingredients. This meal is served family-style and tickets are sold for an affordable price of $20 per person. Each patron is given one ballot to vote for one of four art projects they would like to see happen in Fredericton, NB. A popular vote determines the grant recipient, announced one week following Art Kitchen. The selected recipient will receive a grant from the evening’s profits, providing a local artist or curator with unbureaucratic funding for artistic creation, research, and experimentation.

When is Art Kitchen?
Join us on Tuesday, December 5th, from 6 – 8 pm, at the Picaroons Roundhouse. The evening’s guest chef will be Robin Estey, of the Palate restaurant.

6 – 7 pm Soup is served
7 – 8 pm Guest chef, local collaborators, and the artists will present their creative projects.

How does an Art Kitchen grant work?
After the evening’s event, the ballots are counted, and an artist is selected. The selected recipient will be contacted within one week, and will receive 100% of the grant upfront. The selected recipient agrees to complete their project within three months, after the grant is awarded. In three months’ time, the funded project will be displayed in an art space facilitated by Connexion ARC.

Why should I apply?
Art Kitchen is a method of arts funding that draws from entrepreneurial and grassroots strategies to generate funds for new, emerging, and newly professionalized artists and curators. Art Kitchen encourages communities to engage in the processes of art making and local patronage, as a radically transparent and inclusive fundraiser.

For emerging artists and curators, applying for an Art Kitchen grant is a simple and unbureaucratic method to receive immediate support for a new or continuing project. The initiative approaches arts funding by working outside of possible granting barriers. As an artist-run organization, Connexion ARC seeks to foster the growth of contemporary artists in its membership.
