Drop-in Writing Rooms. Hello playwrights and theatre makers! We invite you to an online, low-commitment opportunity for a spring cleaning of your project backlog, playwriting fundamentals, and everything in between. Hosted by NBActs board member, scriptwriter, and educator Anthony Bryan. Treat yourself by joining us for one or more of these FREE, casual, no-pressure writing spaces designed by and for like-minded artists working toward our April 30th submission deadline!

An opportunity to join a supportive and vibrant artistic space; through weekly prompts, mini-lessons and discussion-led writing circles facilitated by Notable Acts board member, educator and emerging artist Louis Anthony Bryan.

Bring your questions about grant writing and grant applications to this 20-minute one-on-one consultation with professional grant writer, Kathleen Buckley. Here are some possible topics for your session with Katie:

  • Bring an idea: Bounce ideas with Katie and find grant programs that suit your upcoming project.
  • Bring a draft: If you have a draft grant proposal written already, or an unsuccessful application you’d like feedback on, bring a printed or digital copy to the meeting for Katie to edit.
  • No project in mind? Use this time to chat with Katie about how she approaches grant writing and hear some of her top tips for writing a strong proposal.
  • Haven’t applied for a grant before? Use this time to talk to Katie about how grant programs work!

About the Facilitator

Kathleen (Katie) Buckley is an arts administrator and writer from Saint John, New Brunswick. She recently served as Executive Director of Third Space Gallery and is a founding director of the Atlantic Art at Night Festivals Alliance (AANFA).

Over the last three years, she has provided grant writing support to non-profit organizations and artists of all career levels applying to a variety of public arts funders including Canada Council for the Arts, Heritage Canada, Music-Musique NB, artsnb, Arts Nova Scotia, Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ), Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation, and more.

Kathleen’s writing has also appeared in Visual Arts News, CreatedHere Magazine, and Predella: Journal of Visual Arts. Kathleen is now self-employed as a professional grant writer.

Matthew Gorman and Byron Pascoe, both entertainment lawyers, will be hosting an event titled “Copyright Law 101 – An Overview for Artists” on March 3, 2023 at 12:00 Noon Atlantic Standard Time. The event will be hosted virtually.

This event will provide a comprehensive overview of copyright law basics, along with practical implications and considerations for artists in various creative disciplines, whether professional or not. The discussion will cover topics such as protecting intellectual property, avoiding legal pitfalls, and understanding the legal rights and responsibilities of artists.

This will be an excellent opportunity for artists, including visual artists, musicians, filmmakers, and others, to gain a better understanding of the legal aspects of their creative work. Attendees are encouraged to bring their questions and ideas to share with the speaker and other attendees.

“We’re excited to bring together artists from all creative disciplines to learn about copyright law basics and how it affects their work,” said Wendy Turner, Legal Information Service Nova Scotia. “We hope to provide attendees with practical information they can use to protect their intellectual property and avoid legal issues.”
