Galerie d’art Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen proposes two public activities on Wednesday, September 29 2021, as part of the Give Me Shelter exhibition presenting the works of 13 emerging artists of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

An artist-talk by Mimi Stockalnd will be presented (in French) in the Salle Neil-Michaud, room 001-B of the Fine Arts Building (Beaux-arts) on the Université de Moncton campus. Mimi Stockland is a St. John’s-based visual artist whose work spans textiles, sculpture, printmaking and installation. She obtained a BFA from Concordia University in 2009and graduated from the Centre des Textiles Contemporains de Montréal (CTCM) in 2015, after which she established a home and studio practice in Newfoundland. Her work ranges through topics like food, internet humour, cartoons, fashion, camping, tourism, textiles, and contemporary life with a surrealist and absurdist eye.
 
 
RECEPTION: Wednesday, September 29, 5–7 PM, at Galerie d’art Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen
A reception celebrating the exhibition will be held as of 5 PM, with Pan Wendt, exhibition curator, and Mimi Stockland, artist, in attendance. The exhibition presents work that “can inform us as we face an uncertain reality that demands imaginative and constructive energy” and will run until October 3, 2021. Give Me Shelter is organised and circulated by the Confederation Centre Art Gallery with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and RBC. For more information: https://www.umoncton.ca/umcm-ga/chercherrefuge

Make Something Sunday To Go returns with a new kit for September. Make Something Sunday To Go kits include everything you need for art activities inspired by works in our permanent collection. Each activity is accompanied by a short video that gives you an up-close look at an artwork and ideas for something to make in response to it.

Gordon Smith and Colour Combinations

In his print, Special Green, 1967, Gordon Smith explores line and colour. If you look closely, you will see places where colours overlap and new colours are created. Using washi tape, play with the movement of lines and discover new colours as lines cross and layer. Design a set of postcards to send to family and friends.

Annual Society of Canadian Artist’s Elected Members’ Exhibition

On display at Gallery 78 until Saturday, October 2, is the Annual Society of Canadian Artist’s Elected Members’ Exhibition. Member artists from across the country have competed and been juried to participate in this national exhibition. Experience the art of thirty-six artists from across Canada, five of whom won awards totaling $7,000, including the prestigious Mary Pratt Crystal Award.

About the Society of Canadian Artists – The SCA is a national, non-profit artists’ organization dedicated to expanding the visibility and stature of the visual arts. SCA has representation in all the visual arts media.

Call for East Coast artists by Mark Howard
Legendary music producer Mark Howard (Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Barenaked Ladies, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, The Tragically Hip, K.D. Lang, Bob Dylan etc.) has recently moved to Cape Breton, N.S. where he is looking to record local/regional songwriters/recording artists. His most recent production is the “Barenaked Ladies” July 16, 2021 album release called “Detour de Force.”

No Ducks: Emerging Art Critics at the Owens Art Gallery

The Owens Art Gallery is pleased to launch No Ducks: Emerging Art Critics at the Owens Art Gallery, a new online venue for art criticism and essays written by Mount Allison University students. Featuring the writings of Shivanya Albas, Laika Dadoun, and Noah Lubendo, the current issue covers a wide range of topics, including contemporary art and film, decolonization, Black and Jewish identity, cultural appropriation, Indigenous art, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Conceived in the early days of the pandemic, this exciting new publishing venture emerges from the J.E.A. Crake Art Critics-at-Large Program, a student mentorship project designed to give aspiring student writers the opportunity to work with an experienced art critic under circumstances similar to those of professional, independent art critics. Throughout the 2020-2021 academic year, a small group of students developed content for No Ducks under the supervision of Emily Falvey, Director/Curator of the Owens Art Gallery. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the J.E.A. Crake Foundation and Mount Allison University for making the J.E.A. Crake Art Critics-at-LargeProgram possible. Funding for this project came from the J.E.A. Crake ArtsWork Internships program, which is intended to provide Mount Allison University students with opportunities for experiential learning and to enable them to explore career options in the Arts.

And the David Adams Richards Award goes to..

Congratulations to writer Zev Bagel who recently won the David Adams Richards Award for his unpublished novel “Solitary”. The award will be formally given at Wordsfall by the Writers’ Federation of New Brunswick at their award ceremony in Sussex, NB on October 22.

As part of the Shediac ‘Hom’Art’ Festival   Zev will be reading some poems and stories between 3 and 5pm on Saturday and Sunday 18/19 Sept at Rotary Park (by the Big Lobster on Main Street) in Shediac.
 Zev Bagel is the pen-name for Warren Redman.
He is author of seventeen books of non-fiction and two published novels, as well as poetry and short stories. He is past president of the Writers’ Federation of New Brunswick. He lives in Shediac, New Brunswick. Zev’s work is also included in the upcoming publication of “2020” from Black Dog & One-Eyed Press

I’m Buying an NB Book!


Saturday, September 18, 2021, is I’m Buying an NB Book! day. Bookstores, publishers, and literary organizations across New Brunswick have teamed up to launch this initiative which aims to highlight New Brunswick authors and increase sales of their books in local bookstores.

With literature as with food, buying local has a positive impact on the vitality and growth of our community. We invite readers and the literary sector to participate in I’m Buying an NB Book! day in their own way.

All initiatives put forward by individuals or by organizations to promote or to participate in this day are welcomed.

Here are a few ways to participate:

📖 Customize the I’m Buying an NB Book! poster (can be printed here: https://bit.ly/3BHjccj) by adding the address or website of a local bookstore or publisher and place the poster in a public setting (bookstore, library, market, theatre, cultural centre, restaurant, café, community centre, university, college, etc.).

Hooper Studios Gallery

Liane Thibodeau will be the host artist in the morning, and Judy Brittain will be demoing her mosaics in the afternoon. Kathy & Sue will be showing paintings in Kathy’s home. The gardens still look lovely. Thanks for supporting your local artists!

Judy will be demoing her mosaic craft in the downstairs studio. There is a parking lot behind the studio or you can park on the road.

The Gallery features work by; Cathy Love will show a selection of her beautiful photography. Sue and Kathy with prints, cards and sculptures…. There are some John Hooper sculptures for sale in the near future. “Cronos” is on exhibit now. We have paintings by Fred Harrison, Larry Stewart,  collage/paintings by Toby Graser and fibre art by Sophia Bella. Judy Brittain has a variety of lovely mosaics. Phil Savage has amazing stone sculptures and wood carvings of his “ herd”, bears, hippos, horses and more. Enjoy wood, epoxy art pieces by Andy Merrithew and beautiful photography flower art with Liane Thibodeau and Wendy Langille. Wendy will also have some flower bouquets and cards.
