Congratulations to APA award winner Jenelle Duval

A HUGE congratulations to Jenelle Duval, Arts & Culture Coordinator at First Light St. John’s Friendship Centre, for winning this year’s APA Award of Achievement! Thank you Jenelle for your tireless commitment to the Atlantic arts presenting community and the urban St. John’s indigenous community.

Fall artist pitches start next Thursday

On Thursday, October 15th APA will host the first of our Fall Pitch Sessions.

Pitches will be made by artists and/or their representatives who were chosen by our Contact East Showcase Jury earlier in the year. Each session will begin at 1pm Atlantic time every second Thursday. There will be five pitches each session and each pitch will be up to 5 minutes long. Following all five pitches there will be an opportunity for the APA members attending to ask the artists and/or their representatives questions.

Thank you for joining us at Contact(less) East!

The first (and hopefully only!) Contact(less) East is in the books!  We were thrilled with the turnout, the incredible sessions, and the overall vibe of the online conference. We welcomed participants from almost every province and territory, and we even had delegates join us from the UK. The digital format let those who might not normally be able to travel to the conference experience a taste of what Contact East is all about. Thank you to those who participated—there were many learning opportunities along with a lot of laughs and camaraderie.

Call to action from FAME – Event Sector Support Campaign

A message from Martin Roy of FAME (Festivals and Major Events Canada)

The return to normal will not occur in 2021. It would be unrealistic to expect that we could restart our activities in full by next summer. We must convince public health authorities to approve innovative proposals which would allow us to maximize our capacity to generate profits and survive the crisis. The formulas employed by drive-in concerts and socially distanced concerts that we have already seen around the world can serve as a starting point for coming up with these types of ideas.

This is what we need the Federal government to recognize, and why we are today launching what we are calling the “Events Sector Support Campaign.”

Why now? Because the federal budget is currently being conceived, Minister Guilbeault will be making his Departmental asks to the Minister of Finance, and the party caucus will also be putting pressure on having the needs of their local communities addressed in the budget. Now is the time where decisions will be made for action in 2021, notably with regard to financial aid for festivals and events.

For this reason, we are asking for members to take the following action over the coming weeks:

If you have not already spoken with your local Member of Parliament since the beginning of the crisis, now is the time. We suggest that you communicate with your elected official to explain your situation in relation to some of FAME’s recommendations for Canada’s touristic and economic recovery. Specifically, we are hoping that you can ask your MP to speak with and write to both Ministers Guilbeault and Freeland (the Minister of Finance) in support of our recommendations.

To that end, we are providing a template that you can use and adapt as you see fit.

Gallery on Queen

Ritual
Gallery On Queen is pleased to announce Ritual, a show featuring Marie Fox, Alison Willms and Austin Daigle. The show will be taking place on October 8th at the Gallery.

Marie Fox is a figurative oil painter whose work combines traditional western techniques and iconography with ancestral mythologies and mysticism to create a contemporary narrative. Her current project, ‘Celestial Bodies’, was awarded a Creation Grant by artsnb and will debut as a solo exhibition in 2020 at Gallery on Queen.

Alison Willms an emerging artist from the east coast of Canada, who uses a wide range of media in her practice, including analog photography, printmaking, film, sound, and installation. Willms’ work explores a spectrum of ideas from relationships to ritual.

Austin Daigle is an emerging artist, originally from Alberta, he studied at the NBCCD and found an affinity in the malleability of sterling and copper, and went on to graduate with honors from the Jewelry and Metal Arts program in 2017.

Exhibition Information
Marie Fox is a figurative oil painter whose work combines traditional western techniques and iconography with ancestral mythologies and mysticism to create a contemporary narrative. Based in Fredericton, New Brunswick, she has exhibited with several galleries in Atlantic Canada. In 2016, Fox was awarded the Studio Watch Emerging Artists Series and presented her exhibition, ‘Ascend’, at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.
Alison Willms, an emerging artist from the east coast of Canada, is a graduate of the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at Mount Allison University. Alison uses a wide range of media in her practice, including analog photography, printmaking, film, sound, and installation, as she works between two locations she considers ‘home’: Fredericton N.B. and St. Andrews by-the-Sea N.B.. Willms’ work explores a spectrum of ideas from relationships to ritual as she shares her experiences.
Austin Daigle is an emerging artist, taught metalsmith, experienced part-time bench jeweller, and art preparator/ junior curator for Gallery on Queen fine art. Born in Calgary, Alberta, 1995, his family was posted through the military to New Brunswick only a few months after his birth. During his time at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design he found an affinity in the malleability of sterling and copper, and went on to graduate with honors from the Jewelry and Metal Arts program in 2017. Austin has since been working at Gallery On Queen under the guidance of Nadia Khoury, as a preparator he has hung and displayed the work for several exhibitions.

GoQ Community Support Initiative
The ongoing GoQ Community Support Initiative is a campaign designed to give back to our local community. We are committed to keeping one of our walls dedicated to our initiative, and our artists are continuing to generously donate their works.

100% of the funds raised being given to Black Lives Matter Fredericton and Gignoo Transition House. All proceeds will be split 50/50 to these two organizations. We want to give back to our community and we believe strongly in the mandates of these two organizations.

THE ALCHEMIST PART 1

New flamenco-inspired EP by André Saulnier available now. The EP is inspired by the Paulo Coelho novel The Alchemist. “Expérience spécifique d’une signification anormale” est un projet de commissariat par Alisa Arsenault mettant en valeur des estampes de la collection d’archives de l’Atelier d’estampe Imago. L’exposition est présenté du 9 octobre au 5 novembre 2020.

Alisa Arsenault détient un baccalauréat en arts visuels de l’Université de Moncton (2013). Elle a participé à plusieurs expositions de groupe et d’expositions solos au Canada. Son oeuvre, À Cheval, fait partie du parcours d’art public Images Rémanentes. Elle a récemment exposé, ainsi que réalisé une résidence de création de deux semaines, à la galerie d’art Beaverbrook dans le cadre de l’exposition Harbour de la commissaire Amy Ash. Cette exposition fait partie d’une série annuelle d’exploration de nos archives. Nous reconnaissons l’appui  du Département du Tourisme, Patrimoine et Culture de la province du Nouveau-Brunswick.

« Specific experience of an abnormal meaningfulness », curated by Alisa Arsenault, features prints pulled from Atelier Imago’s archive collection. The exhibit will be presented from October 9th to November 5th 2020.

Alisa Arsenault holds a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from the Université de Moncton (2013). She has participated in several group and solo exhibitions in Canada. Her work, À Cheval, is part of the public art course Images Rémanentes. She recently exhibited and completed a two-week creative residency at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery as part of curator Amy Ash’s exhibition Harbour. This exhibit is part of an annual exploration of our vast archives. We acknowledge the support of the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture of the Province of New Brunswick. Thank you!

Nous avons invité 24 artistes d’ici (Moncton, NB) et d’un peu plus loin au Canada à participer à un échange d’œuvre. Chaque artiste est tâché de créer une série de 25 œuvres explorant les limites et les possibilités de l’estampe en format 5 x 7 pouces. Chaque participant en retour recevra une boîte contenant une épreuve de chaque artiste participant. La 25e boîte sera gardée pour nos archives et exposée dans notre galerie en hiver 2020.

We invited 24 artists from here (Moncton, NB) and further afield in Canada to participate in a print exchange. Each artist is tasked with creating a series of 25 prints exploring the limits and possibilities of printmaking in 5 x 7 inch format. Each participant in return will receive a box containing one proof from each participating artist. The 25th box will be kept for our archives and displayed in our gallery in winter 2020.

Cette année, nous avons dû repousser notre programmation régulière de résidences dans notre atelier en cause des restrictions liées au voyage. En échange, nous avons alors lancé l’appel de résidences à nos membres. Un jury de pairs a sélectionné Alisa Arsenault, Blake Morin, Carole Deveau et Patrick McFarlane pour faire des résidences de 2 à 4 semaines entre décembre 2020 et avril 2021. Plus de détails à venir.

This year, we had to postpone our regular residency programming in our studio due to travel restrictions. In lieu, we launched the call for residences to our members. A jury of peers selected Alisa Arsenault, Blake Morin, Carole Deveau and Patrick McFarlane for residencies of 2 to 4 weeks between December 2020 and April 2021. More details to come.

Gathered Blooms and Fredericton Summer Residencies
As our familiar landscapes give way to warm yellows, browns, and reds, the exhibitions Gathered Blooms and Fredericton Summer Residencies remember the lush, vibrant colours of summer. Alongside these shows,
A Fredericton Collection honours a collector’s vision and a love of art.
All works are available to view online, and they are on display to view in person until Saturday, October 31, 2020.
Mingle outside with the artists and tour the gallery in limited numbers from 4-7 pm on Thursday, October 8, as part of the Queen Street Mini Gallery Hop in coordination with Gallery on Queen and the CreatedHere Studio.
Face masks are required.
Gathered Blooms
Flowers and gardens have long inspired artists; countless paintings, poems, and music pieces sing the praises of nature’s colourful, beautiful, and perfumed plants.
(While it isn’t winter yet, the following poem by Lucy Maud
Montgomery illustrates that feeling of longing of summer blooms while they nestle in over the colder months.)
Frosty-white and cold it lies
Underneath the fretful skies;
Snowflakes flutter where the red
Banners of the poppies spread,
And the drifts are wide and deep
Where the lilies fell asleep.
But the sunsets o’er it throw
Flame-like splendor, lucent glow,
And the moonshine makes it gleam
Like a wonderland of dream,
And the sharp winds all the day

A Fredericton Collection
A look into a person’s personal collection is an intimate, powerful experience. To witness the works that someone has carefully tended over years, much like a garden, is a special experience; each piece, an investment in itself, was chosen for a specific reason, be it a story behind the work, a shared relationship with the artist, or that inexplicable spark of emotion upon first glance.
It is also quite special to come across older works from artists one is familiar with, and see their progressions.
We are honoured to display the works of one gentleman’s collection, who is a good client and friend of the gallery, and to have them available for purchase once again, so that others may continue to enjoy them.
Fredericton Summer Residencies
This past summer, a group of artists participated in the City of Fredericton’s Summer Residencies at Odell Park and the Fredericton Botanic Garden. Their mediums range from visual arts, to music, textile, fine craft, and literature, and it is glorious to see what they’ve created.
While it was a different residency experience due to COVID-19, these artists were still able to have close, genuine contact with the park’s and garden’s trees, resident flowers and plants, fauna, and the atmosphere of the area.
The featured artists are: Jacqueline Bourque, Renata Britez, Cat Candow, Jasmine Cull, Sasha French, Darcy Hunter, Emily Kennedy, Karen LeBlanc,
Riel Nason, Tracey O’Brien, Sarah Sarty, Caroline Simpson, Ralph Simpson, and Kirsten Stackhouse.
New Work
New to the gallery is a delightful new paper sculpture of a caribou by France Pillière, exquisite coastal landscapes by Matthew Collins, and dreamy cityscapes by R.F.M. McInnis.

Pauline Young Wabanaki/People of the Dawn

Wabanaki/People of the Dawn is the first in a new series of commissioned flags created for the Owens Art Gallery’s exterior flagpole. Designed by artist Pauline Young, the flag features two figures in a birchbark canoe paddling from sunrise to sunset and represents the territory of Mi’kma’ki as a living relationship between land and sea. In the artist’s words, “Land and sea, from sunrise to sunset, it is all Mi’kma’ki.”

Pauline Young is a respected Mi’kmaq visual artist from Metepenagiag First Nation. In her work, she draws inspiration from the natural environment and the legacy of her father, Philip Young, a renowned artist who exposed her to art at a very young age. Employing a variety of media, including painting, drawing, and stained-glass, her artistic practice carries forward both family and cultural traditions of storytelling and image-making.

Installed on the roof of the Owens Art Gallery, which is located in a nineteenth-century, beaux-arts building, Wabanaki/People of the Dawn is an important assertion of Mi’kmaq sovereignty. Every year, the Owens will commission a Mi’kmaq artist to design a new flag for both the flagpole and its permanent collection. Two flags will be made each time: one for the wind and one for the vaults. These flags are sewn, not printed, so that the labour of their makers is physically apparent. Every five years, the gallery will exhibit the flags together, the weather-beaten ones next to their partners from the vaults. This project thus serves as an ongoing land acknowledgement that honours the L’nuk (Mi’kmaq) as the traditional owners and custodians of the unceeded lands upon which the Owens was built.

To keep this project grounded in community, each artist who designs a flag will nominate the artist for the following year. We are thrilled to announce that the artist designing the flag for 2021 is Natasha Patles. Patles is a talented artist from Eel Ground First Nation with a Diploma in Fine Craft and Applied Design from New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. We look forward to working with her on this important collaboritive project.

We would like to acknowledge, honour, and pay respect to the traditional owners and custodians—from all four directions—of the land on which we live. It is upon the unceded, ancestral lands of the L’nuk (Mi’kmaq) that the Owens Art Gallery is located. While this area is known as Sackville, New Brunswick, it is part of Siknikt, a district of the greater territory of Mi’kma’ki. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship,” which the Mi’kmaq Wolastoqiyik, and Peskotomuhkati first signed with the British Crown in 1725.

Launch of project Isolated//Together

Led by Atlantic Ballet Atlantique Canada in collaboration with Harrison Burton of Brainworks Creative, ISOLATED//TOGETHER is a multidisciplinary project documenting the COVID-19 experience In New Brunswick through dance, film, music, spoken word, photography and visual arts. Partners include the Beaverbrook Gallery and 14 visual artists from across the province, Theatre New Brunswick, photographer Denis Duquette, composer/musician Elephant Skeletons and 14 dancers from Atlantic Ballet, Connection Dance Works (Saint John) and Solo Chicken Productions (Fredericton) as well as Wolastoq performance artist Nipahtuwet Naka Wespahtuwet Possesom.

From Atlantic Ballet: The creative imagination of Artistic Director Igor Dobrovolskiy will be creating 9 of the 14 dance solos for the dancers of Atlantic Ballet. In collaboration with other choreographers and dancers from Connection Dance Works, Solo Chicken Productions and Possesom Paul, Atlantic Ballet, along with videographer Harrison Burton and with a soundscape created by St-John multi-instrumentalist Clifford J. Doucette aka Elephant Skeleton, will be joining forces at the Capitol to create a unique visual experience for the audience to watch in the future.

From the Beaverbrook Art Gallery: Masks will be part of our culture for the foreseeable future. In this new project, we invited artists to submit designs for a wearable facemask that commemorates the masks we are wearing and their related social constraints, as we navigate the challenges of a pandemic. Fourteen artists were chosen to create masks using any medium that will be exhibited in a virtual showcase, three gallery exhibitions, and will be worn by dancers for post pandemic performances.

From TNB: We will gather the stories of New Brunswickers in isolation and staying at home about how isolation makes them feel via Zoom or Skype. This could be good or bad experiences. These stories will represent our entire community and include stories of newcomers in their own language. We will work through the Multi-cultural associations across NB to gather names. Stories will be gathered and curated into audio that can be sorted by language. The audio can be overlaid and listened to while watching the dance films or simply stand alone as the stories of New Brunswickers during the pandemic.

 

From Brainworks: Living in this historic period of time, we’re able to relate to these performers and what they’re going through. Our ultimate goal is to one day revisit these locations when they’re bustling with life so the dancers can perform again.  We want to take the public on a journey throughout New Brunswick while you experience isolation through dance.
