Introspect: a nature residency 2024

ArtsLink NB is announcing the call for artists for the second iteration of Introspect: a nature residency. The two-week residency is being held in collaboration with Parks NB, and will bring together five artists in Mount Carleton Provincial Park to work on a personal project and a community creation. The artists will have the experience of having two dedicated weeks without distraction to work on their art, taking inspiration from the beautiful, picturesque setting of the park.

Residency Information

Introspect: a nature residency is a low-tech residency; a return to the simplest forms of creation. The residency will focus on the essentials, eliminating all potential distractions by limiting the use of screens and other technologies, to focus entirely on the process of creation.

Location

The selected artists will be staying in Mount Carleton Provincial Park, in the park’s heritage cabins at the Nictau campsite. Each artist will have their own bedroom and will share a larger cabin with either one other artist or the residency coordinator. Each cabin is equipped with a kitchen that has a fridge and a propane stove, a wood stove, and a shared detached bathroom. 

Residency Goals

• To encourage artistic exploration and the creation of new works in healthy, artistically conducive conditions
• To contribute to the increasing artistic quality of works
• To facilitate collaboration and the sharing of expertise in both individual and collective projects
• To facilitate meetings between the artists and the public and to help the public better understand the creation process.

The works that are created will be presented publicly at the end of the residency. The artists will be given complete artistic freedom, but they will be asked to open their studio space to allow the community to learn about their creative processes on one or two of the days, subject to the park and other factors.

Expectations

 The selected artists will be expected to:

1. Provide their own art supplies
2. Provide their own camping equipment, including but not limited to bedding and kitchenware
3. Interact with the other participating artists
4. Submit a final report to ArtsLink NB within 30 days of the end of the residency
5. Work together on a piece of work to leave in the park as a record of the residency (ArtsLink NB will provide the parameters of this project and the final result will be determined as a group)

Application Information

Who Can Apply?

All professional artists* of any discipline are invited to apply for the residency, both emerging and established. We highly welcome diverse applicants, and are able to work with you to make sure that you understand the application process. We use artsnb’s definition of a professional artist, but welcome artists who might not meet these criteria to apply regardless. Artists must be available for the full duration of the residency, from June 3 to 16, 2024.

*Note that the selected artists must be residents of New Brunswick.

How do I apply?

1. Artists should fill out the linked Google Form in full, including a detailed project description (roughly 500 words).
2. Artists should email their supporting documents to jeri@artslinknb.com. Supporting documents include an artist statement, CV, and 3-5 samples of work.
3. Application assistance is available by emailing jeri@artslinknb.com or calling (506)647-6201, and there will be two info sessions on the residency to help answer any questions. If there are any application accommodations that need to be made, please let us know via those channels. 

Selection Criteria

The applications will be evaluated by a peer jury. The main things that the jury will look for are:

1. The relevance and feasibility of the proposed project, given the location and technical capabilities of the residency
2. The project’s originality and creativity
3. The potential impact of the project on the artist’s career
4. The project’s fit with the residency’s mission

Timeline

Applications open: Jan 22, 2024
Application deadline: Feb 21, 2024
Candidates will have a response by: March 8, 2024
Residency: June 3 to 16, 2024

What’s Include

• A $1,500 stipend
• Reimbursement for travel costs from the artist’s residence to the residency location (over 50 km)
• Lodging in a shared cabin in the park
• A per-diem for food and other expenses

ArtsLink NB annonce un appel aux artistes pour la deuxième édition d’Introspec : une résidence en nature. Cette résidence de deux semaines est organisée en collaboration avec Parcs NB et réunira cinq artistes dans le parc provincial du mont Carleton pour réaliser un projet personnel et une création communautaire. Les artistes auront l’occasion de passer deux semaines sans distractions afin de se consacrer à leur art, en s’inspirant du cadre magnifique et pittoresque du parc.

Information sur la résidence

Introspect : une résidence en nature est une résidence “low-tech”, un retour aux formes les plus simples de la création. La résidence se concentre sur l’essentiel, éliminant toutes les distractions potentielles en limitant l’utilisation d’écrans et d’autres technologies, pour se concentrer entièrement sur le processus de création.

Lieu

Les artistes sélectionnés séjourneront dans le parc provincial du Mont Carleton, sur un site de camp traditionnel, aux chalets Nictau. Chaque artiste aura sa propre chambre et partagera un chalet plus grand avec un ou une autre artiste ou la personne chargée de la coordination de la résidence. Chaque chalet est équipé d’une cuisine avec réfrigérateur, d’un poêle au propane, d’un poêle à bois et d’une salle de bain individuelle commune.

Objectifs de la résidence

• Encourager l’exploration artistique et la création de nouvelles œuvres dans des conditions saines et propices à l’art.
• Contribuer à l’accroissement de la qualité artistique des œuvres.
• Faciliter la collaboration et le partage d’expertise dans les projets individuels et collectifs.
• Faciliter les rencontres entre les artistes et le public et aider ce dernier à mieux comprendre le processus de création.

Les œuvres créées seront présentées publiquement à la fin de la résidence. Les artistes jouiront d’une totale liberté artistique, mais il leur sera demandé d’ouvrir leur atelier pour permettre à la communauté de découvrir leur processus créatif pendant un ou deux jours, en fonction du parc et d’autres facteurs.

Attentes

Les artistes sélectionnés devront

1. Fournir leurs propres fournitures artistiques
2. Fournir leur propre matériel de camping, y compris, mais sans s’y limiter, la literie et les ustensiles de cuisine.
3. Interagir avec les autres artistes qui participent.
4. Soumettre un rapport final à ArtsLink NB dans les 30 jours suivant la fin de la résidence.
5. Travailler ensemble sur une œuvre qui sera installée dans le parc comme souvenir de la résidence (ArtsLink NB fournira les paramètres de ce projet et le résultat final sera déterminé en groupe).

Qui peut poser sa candidature ?

Tout artiste professionnel,* quelle que soit sa discipline, est invité à poser sa candidature ; qu’il s’agisse d’une artiste ou d’un artiste émergent ou établi. Nous accueillons avec enthousiasme les candidatures diversifiées et sommes en mesure de travailler avec vous pour nous assurer que vous comprenez le processus de candidature. Nous utilisons la définition d’artiste professionnel d’ArtsNB, mais nous invitons les artistes qui ne répondent peut-être pas à ces critères à déposer quand même leur candidature. Les artistes doivent être disponibles pour toute la durée de la résidence, du 3 au 16 juin 2024.

*Notez que les artistes sélectionnés doivent être des résidents du Nouveau-Brunswick.

Comment poser sa candidature ?

1. Les artistes doivent remplir ce formulaire Google dans son intégralité, y compris une description détaillée du projet (environ 500 mots).
2. Les artistes doivent envoyer leurs documents justificatifs par courriel à jeri@artslinknb.com. Les documents justificatifs comprennent une déclaration de l’artiste, un CV et 3 à 5 échantillons de travaux.
3. Une aide à la candidature est disponible en envoyant un courriel à jeri@artslinknb.com ou en appelant le (506) 647-6201. Deux séances d’information sur la résidence seront organisées pour répondre à toutes les questions. Si des aménagements doivent être apportés à la candidature, veuillez-nous en informer par ces moyens.

Critères de sélection

Les demandes seront évaluées par un jury de pairs. Les principaux éléments pris en compte par le jury sont les suivants :

1. La pertinence et la faisabilité du projet proposé, compte tenu du lieu et des capacités techniques de la résidence
2. L’originalité et la créativité du projet
3. L’impact potentiel du projet sur la carrière de l’artiste
4. L’intégration du projet avec la mission de la résidence

Chronologie

Date limite de dépôt des candidatures : 21 février 2024
Les personnes candidates recevront une réponse d’ici le 8 mars 2024.

Ce qui est inclus :

Une allocation de 1 500 dollars
Remboursement des frais de déplacement de la demeure de l’artiste au lieu de résidence (plus de 50 km).
Hébergement dans un chalet partagé dans le parc.
Un per diem sera fourni pour la nourriture et autres dépenses.
