Visiting Artist Talk with Maryse Goudreau

Artist, independent scholar and filmmaker, Maryse Goudreau will give a talk on her work at the Owens Art Gallery on Tuesday 27 February, 2018 at 7:30 PM. All are welcome to attend.

Maryse Goudreau offers a sociological, political and anthropological point of view that brings viewers to think about the importance of social history. She breathes new life into images of the past as a way of addressing current issues. Using a hybrid approach, she attempts to release images from their static relationship to an official history and create narrative, literary, pictorial and other types of spaces. Since 2012 she has been working on a thematic archive on the social history of the beluga whale. The materials in this archive-artwork, made up of diverse data, photographs, videos and recreations, and including both archival images and images she has made, are regularly remixed and rearranged to produce new works.

Maryse Goudreau lives in Escuminac on the Gaspé coast and in Montreal, QC. Disseminated in different parts of the world (North America, Mexico, Cuba & Europe), her work is also included in national collections such as: the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.

This talk is part of the Visiting Artist Program, a series co-sponsored by Mount Allison’s Department of Fine Arts, The Owens Art Gallery and Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre. The Visiting Artist Program is funded by a grant form the Canada Council for the Arts to the Department of Fine Arts at Mount Allison University.
