Visiting Artist Talk with Cindy Mochizuki
January 10, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Tuesday 10 January 2017 | 7:30 pm
Owens Art Gallery, Mount Allison University
Interdisciplinary Artist Cindy Mochizuki will give a talk on her work at the Owens Art Gallery on Tuesday 10 January 2017 at 7:30 pm. All are welcome to attend.
Cindy Mochizuki has worked in installation, performance, animation, drawings and collaborative works. Her work considers spaces that embody both the fictional and documentary. Often working with archival sources, memory work and interviews, Mochizuki’s practice revisits historical and personal memory. Her multi-media works experiment with moving images, optical illusions and magical realism through a hybrid of video, film, audio and animation.
A large body of Mochizuki’s work investigates narratives and memories within the archive of familial architecture, including childhood spaces, home videos, photography, and oral histories. Family, displacement, migration and remembrance of traumatic historical memory have been departure points within an ongoing series of works that re-visits the memory and history of the Japanese Canadian internment and its effects on family members both within Canada and Japan.
Cindy Mochizuki has a MFA in Interdisciplinary Studies from the School for Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University. Her short films have been screened in Hungary, Holland, Korea, Toronto, Los Angeles and Montreal. Mochizuki’s recent exhibitions and projects include: 105 Chrysanthemums, Wakayama Museum (2016); Things on the Shoreline, Access Gallery (2016); and Shako Club, grunt gallery (2015).
Cindy Mochizuki’s talk is part of the Visiting Artist Program, a series co-sponsored by Mount Allison’s Department of Fine Arts, The Owens Art Gallery and Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre. The Visiting Artist Program is funded by a grant form the Canada Council for the Arts to the Department of Fine Arts at Mount Allison University.
