Opening Reception: Thursday, August 18th (7-9PM) On display until September 24th, 2016
SPECTRA is a retrospective exhibition of several groups of paintings encompassing representation and abstraction, and small and large formats. The vitality of colour is the unifying element. Abstract values are highlighted, compressing and articulating art of the past, and through Modernism connecting them to the present.
Seven still-life paintings, each one devoted to a colour in the spectrum, pay homage to the quiet tradition of domesticity. The potential of a single colour is the main ingredient in each of these paintings. Common objects from the artists’ kitchen allow the interaction and play of light and shadow on decorative patterns, solid and transparent forms.
The first variation of the SPECTRA theme are seven watercolours in a square grid-like abstraction where a similar composition focuses on one colour. The intensity and strength of each colour, whether primary or complimentary, is manipulated to enhance its formal and expressive elements.
The second variation introduces the element of time. Released from the square format, seven acrylic relief paintings intensify the relationship of colour and form in a sculptural context. Hard edges hold in colour and create shadows while overlapping forms allow subtle changes in tone, colour and depth.
Larger paintings provide a backdrop for the artwork described above. Influenced by the tradition and elegance of geometrical abstraction, Stevens has, in these paintings, been inspired by activities in the natural world as well as the possibilities and tensions in colour relationships.
