“Road Work, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying
and Love Guard Rail” by Jack Bishop
“For the last 10 years, the subject matter in my paintings has been dominated by commercial imagery and car-culture. I was once told by the late painter Gerald Ferguson to “paint what you know”, and growing up in southern New Brunswick amidst expanding strip malls of Quispamsis and the sprawl of East Saint John, I’ve always identified with travelling the 15 minute highway commute between home and town. In this series of paintings created over the summer, I was riffing off of my romanticism of the Trans-Canada Highway, and experimenting with reflected and refracted colour and light. I became interested in creating backdrops of starry night skies, sunsets, and rainbows amidst mundane segments of ditch, medians and guard rail. I was thinking about capturing a sense of the sublime in nature, and trying to emote an impression of awe and vastness amidst infrastructure of a road carved through the brush.”

“Decant” by Darren Emenau
Darren Emenau lives along the shores of the Saint John River in New Brunswick, Canada. He specializes in combining local and commercial materials to produce vessels inspired by industrial and natural landscapes. For the past twenty years, Emenau has lived along a creek in the country amongst ancient maples hanging over a wide creek bed, where lichen, moss and the quiet of nature has been the focal point of his work.
Friday’s show will feature works from Decanter, a series of pouring vessels that push the boundary of conventional ceramic forms. More decorative sculpture than functional wares, this work is a jumping-off point for Emenau. Accents of silicone, spray paint, and metal are included in the surface treatments – a clear departure from his previous ‘purist’ approach. The show will also include pieces from Emenau’s repertoire of lichen vessels.
