Moth Migration Project
September 28, 2018 - October 20, 2018
Moth Migration Project is a crowd-sourced collection of hand printed, drawn and cut paper moths exhibited in an installation format along the walls and ceiling of the gallery. In this exhibition, artist Hilary Lorenz highlight moths from the New Brunswick geographic area with the goal of collecting and exhibiting 4,000 moths. In the time leading up to the exhibition, Lorenz will engage local artists, teachers, colleges and civic groups to become participants in the project, thus bringing the spotlight to our extended community.
Choosing moths, a nocturnal pollinator, as the vehicle for cross-pollination and international exchange, and using social media, artist Hilary Lorenz invited people to create paper moths native to their geographic location. The moths became a symbol of community as the project expands with artist submissions, satellite exhibitions, printmaking workshops, school art projects and family and community gatherings.
Since its inception in 2017, Moth Migration Project has fostered an international cross-pollination of ideas and community building among friends and strangers with 15,463 submissions. Moth Migration Project is far more reaching than exhibition locations; there are additional components including a Facebook Moth Migration Group, where people cultivate relationships and share photographs of their moths and personal experience, a website at mothmigrationproject.net, workshops and public print socials.
