Intro to Tapestry Weaving

Course Description:
Intro to tapestry weaving is a 6-week introductory course that teaches basic terms, definitions, and loom set up. It explores tapestry weaving, but focuses on 3 weaving techniques and a few finishing techniques. The weaving will be done on a frame loom, which is small and portable.
Equipment: frame loom, to be provided on loan
What to bring:
– a fork
– a fine tipped sharpie or other permanent marker
– masking tape
– ruler
– pencil
Course Outline
Week 1: Definitions, terms, introduction to tools etc. Setting up the loom. Draw out design
Week 2-3: Start and work on weaving open slit technique
Week 3-4: Move on to interlocking technique
Week 4-5: Move on to dovetailing technique
Week 6: Finish up any weaving, remove tapestry from loom, explore some finishing techniques, hanging options etc.
About the Instructor:
Andrea Butler graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, with a major in textiles. She was awarded the Reginald D. Evans Fund, Centennial Scholarship for high standing in academics and studio practice. Since graduating, Butler has held solo shows and been part of several group shows. Andrea has received two Emerging Artist grants from the NB Arts Board. She was one of four Canadians chosen as part of the American Tapestry Alliance Biennial 6, an international tapestry exhibition that traveled the USA for 2007. In 2009, artsnb awarded her with a Saint John Regional Grant to create three large-scale tapestries that hung on the exterior east wall of Imperial Theatre in the fall of 2010. Most recently three of her tapestries were included in the 8th International Fiber Art Biennale in Beijing, China
