Art Expressed Workshops
July 11, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm
FreeGalerie d’art Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen is hosting the east itinarary of the ART EXPRESSED/ART EXPRIMÉ project which is organised by the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Celebrating the 150th anniversary of Canada’s confederation, artists are taking part in a coast-to-coast-to-coast adventure abord three six-metre shipping containers transformed into mobile art studios. ART EXPRESSED will be traveling in each province and territory by train, truck and cargo ship, stopping in at least 15 communities, utimately converging in Winnipeg, at the heart of the country.
The artist on board of the eastern journey and stopping in Moncton is Evin Collis. Evin envisions participants will collectively transform a shipping container and bring to life a raucous, whimsical rail car by creating and animating the art studio-installation of the travelling “Voyageur Express”. A medley of characters will be built from papier-mâché that can embody anyone or anything during a cross-Canada railroad journey. The artist will compile animations and images from the journey comprising of the participants’ drawings, paintings, photographs and words that are synchronized with audio recordings of participants sharing their personal ideas, stories, poems, songs and anecdotes.
Evin Collis is a multi-disciplinary artist and art educator from Winnipeg, Manitoba who holds a Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2016) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Ontario College of Art and Design University (2010). He creates paintings, drawings, sculptures and stop-motion animations that investigate the complexities of the degraded landscape, history, identity and survival. Much of his fascination with these subjects stems from his past experiences of working as a porter on the Canadian trans-continental railroad and while working as a costumed historical interpreter at an old Hudson’s Bay Company trading fort.
The workshops offered by ART EXPRESSED will be held at the Galerie d’art Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen between July 8th and July 12th from 1 pm to 4:30 pm on weekends and 11 am to 4:30 pm on weekdays. The workshops do not require any registration; they are free and open to all ages! Groups, summer camps, and daycares that wish to participate are invited to contact the gallery by calling (506) 858-4088 or by emailing galrc@umoncton.ca
