This course is for beginner to emerging painters who would like to paint directly in oils but are concerned about the toxicity of some solvents and pigments. Emphasis will be placed on alternative methods through the use of walnut oil mediums and eco-friendly solvents. Alla prima (single application) oil painting methods will be demonstrated through hands-on sessions using still-life setups or photographs as references indoors and Plein-air sessions outdoors with weather permitting. Additional topics will include: making and preparation of painting surfaces, making paint using dry pigments and walnut oil, basic composition concepts, preliminary sketching/notans, and basics of colour mixing.
