The Owens Art Gallery is pleased to be co-presenting an exhibition and artist talk by Lido Pimienta as part of SappyFest 12. In partnership with SappyFest and Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre, Pimienta will present TRAD(E)ITIONSTAPESTRIES an off-site exhibition of textile works that explore the origin of ‘exotic’ fruits and insects in North America. Lido Pimienta has written, “The exhibition compares and contrasts the nuances of (cultural) Tradition and (business) Trade of animals and plants with those of Diaspora that has been culturally traded and sold throughout herstory.”
On Saturday, 5 August at 11:00 am, Lido Pimienta will present an artist talk titled, Trying to Make It (By Doing It) & The Many Ways to be An Artist. In this talk, Pimienta will explore the many different ways to be an artist, to become an artist (who gets paid) and the hilarious, dramatic and painful ways to survive as one–in the context of Canada.
Lido Pimienta (b.1986) is a Toronto-based Colombian born Afro-Indigenous interdisciplinary artist-curator and musician. She has performed, exhibited, and curated around the world since 2002. Her work explores the politics of gender, race, motherhood, identity and the construct of the Canadian landscape in the Latinx American Diaspora and vernacular.
The exhibition and artist talk will be presented at 110 Main Street, Sackville, NB. All are welcome to attend. The exhibition will be open to visitors:
Friday, 4 August, 5-10 PM
Saturday, 5 August, 11 AM – 9 PM
Sunday, 6 August, 11 AM – 6 PM
