Sculpture Saint John is pleased to offer a one-day foraged fibre basketry workshop by plant fibre artist, Ralph Simpson. Locally collected plant fibres will be introduced, including daylily, iris blades and some grasses. Each participant will complete a unique, small basket by the end of the workshop.
In this workshop, participants will learn about:
Foraging for plant fibre;
Processing and storage techniques; and,
Preparing the fibres for weaving.
Age group: Adults
Time: 9am-5pm, with a one-hour break for lunch

Seize the remaining hours of summer and join award-winning author and professor Dr. Gerard Collins for this condensed version of his storytelling masterclass, which he recently taught at the invitation of the Frye Festival. In this half-day workshop, we’ll talk about story structure, how to show instead of tell, how to develop characters, enhance narrative tension, infuse your prose with subtext, and write dialogue that gets people talking. Bring your questions and conundrums—we’re putting it all on the table. ~~~~~~~~~~ About your host: Gerard Collins is the award-winning author of FINTON MOON, MOONLIGHT SKETCHES, and most recently, THE HUSH SISTERS. (www.gerardcollins.ca) Gerard is a Newfoundland writer, now living in New Brunswick, whose first novel, Finton Moon, was nominated for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic, the Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage and History Award, and has won the Percy Janes First Novel Award. In 2019, he turned the Finton Moon experience into a multi-media art exhibition, “The Book that Wrote Itself”. His short story collection, Moonlight Sketches, won the Newfoundland and Labrador Book Award. In 2021 his second novel, The Hush Sisters won an international Next Generation Indie Book Award in the suspense category and also was a finalist in the paranormal category. Gerard has won numerous arts and letters awards for fiction, published in journals and anthologies, garnered positive reviews and arts grants, had his short stories taught in multiple university courses, and his first novel has been placed in high school learning resource centres across Newfoundland and Labrador. Explore Raku glazing and decorating techniques to create the three basic characteristics of Raku – Crackle, Lustres, and Carbonization. Raku firing is one of the most natural techniques that you can encounter in pottery. In raku firing, all of natural elements are used, earth, fire, air, and water.
Lithography is a printing process dating back to the 18th century, based on the principle that grease and water don’t mix. This beginner lithography workshop will cover the basics of the lithography process from preparing the lithographic stone, drawing the image on the stone, preparing the stone through an etching process, and finally resulting in a print.
Draw from a live model to flex your drawing skills! These sessions are for beginners and experienced drawers who are interested in practicing drawing the human figure. A model will do multiple poses to challenge your perception and way of seeing the figure.

Here’s a great opportunity for tapestry weavers! Join Ixchel Suarez for a 1.5 day contemporary weaving workshop on 2 to 3D techniques on Saturday August 27 10-4 and Sunday, August 28 9-12 in Fredericton NB Canada.
Location TBD. Cost is $250pp.
This includes all supplies, but weavers are encouraged to bring yarn and fibre too; weavers can bring your own small loom or you can use one of Ixchel’s frame looms.

Ixchel is a dedicated weaver and visual artist that explores different materials that are woven using tapestry techniques in non-conventional ways.
Materials will be provided. Make sure you bring along interesting materials you want to incorporate in your samples. Ixchel will demonstrate how to apply different techniques in weaving to accomplish your project ideas.
Learn to throw on the potters wheel! In this introductory class you’ll learn how to make the two most basic types of pots, bowls and cylinders, which are the foundation of almost everything made on the wheel. Using these skills we will make bowls, cups, vases and other simple items, as well as how to add handles to create the most wonderful of all pots: The Mug.
Here is your chance to create your own, unique door number using glass mosaic!
During this two-day workshop, you will start by designing your door number, in the size of your choosing. Your instructor will provide the weatherproof base. Next, choose from the wide variety of mosaic materials available in class. Your instructor will be teaching two mosaic application techniques.
By the end of day 2, you will have a door number that will be the envy of your neighbourhood!
Materials: $25 paid to the instructor on the first day of the course. All tools, adhesives, grouts (if needed), glass, gloves, and initial substrate or base will be provided. You provide the substrate(s) for your next projects: a sphere, tabletop, mirror, stepping stone, precut plywood base, or garden pot. You are encouraged to bring your own artifacts (glass, old jewelry, stone, tile) if desired. Consultation with the instructor prior to the start is encouraged.

With minimal tools and a good dose of imagination, discover the seemingly endless creative possibilities of the instant photographic object that is the Polaroid. Using emulsion lifts, transfers, manipulation, collage, and the hidden negative, Moncton-based artist Annie France Noël demonstrates the physical and chemical properties of the Polaroid film, to understand its potential beyond the usual point and shoot approach.
Workshop attendees will also participate in a Polaroid-Off, where they will compete to create their own unique Polaroid manipulations.
