A Sarah Sackville drawing of a brick building.

Join local artist Sarah Sackville for a plein-air pastel workshop where participants will sketch urban scenes in beautiful downtown Sussex using pastel on paper. Participants will learn to sketch from life and can expect to have two finished pieces and a plein-air pastel kit to take home with them at the end of the workshop.

Participants must be prepared to be outside and will walk to various locations within a two-block radius of the AX Arts Centre. Make sure to wear an apron or clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

Sarah will offer a second workshop in the fall that follows the same format but uses different locations around Sussex. Artists of all skill levels, including intermediate and advanced artists, are encouraged to participate in either or both of Sarah’s workshops.

Do it Together: Mini-Zines and Mighty Buttons 🔘

July 21, 2022 @ 8:00 am 5:00 pm

Do it Together: Mini-Zines and Mighty Buttons, at the Owens Art Gallery, Sunday, 31 July 20221:00 pm – 4:00 pm.

Do it together

For one afternoon only, we’re transforming our lobby into a Do-it-Yourself/Do-it-Together community studio. With just paper, pens, scissors, and glue, harness the power of small to make your own mini-zines and pin-back buttons. Explore the personal, political, or purely visual. Tell your own story or collaborate with friends.

Held in conjunction with Sappyfest, this all-ages event is free. We’ll have all the supplies you need, plus tips to get you started. You might also find inspiration in the Owens Art Gallery’s Teeny Tiny Zine Library and a special selection of indie music and Sappyfest-inspired zines that will be on display. The soundtrack for the afternoon will be a mix of Sappy favourites from years past.

Publish your zine on our photocopier and press your own shiny button to wear home. Trade your zines with friends and, if you choose, you can leave a copy in our library for others to read.

Masks are required to visit the Owens and attend this event

July 23, 2022 @ 1:00 pm 4:00 pm

This is a 3 hour class that is open to all ages and anyone can do it! It involves designing and cementing rocks, shells, clay tiles and other interesting objects to a plywood backing that is wired to hang. Tim will introduce you to basic principals of design, opening your eyes to new ways of seeing, appreciating and creating. You’ll watch Tim play alongside you and think out loud about what’s working and what isn’t. “What if I tried this?” “How about that?” “Do I like it?”
