The Lorenzo Society is happy to remind you of the Weekly Wednesday Concert Series in honour of Dr. Li-Hong Xu continuing this Wednesday, January 18th.

Featured musician of the week: Rebecca Dobbelsteyn.

Rebecca Dobbelsteyn is a professional musician in the Saint John area. She sings a variety of venues and events, ranging from solo performances on the Saint John Boardwalk to joining local band Jazz Loyalty Program at the Moonlight Bazaar. Rebecca teaches voice at Interaction Children’s Theatre, and has been featured on CBC Radio Information Morning to showcase her recently released EP Promenade.

Joining Rebecca will be her cousin Jenna Dobbelsteyn, who is a 4th-year student at UNBSJ with the Faculty of Arts. The Lorenzo Society is excited to welcome Rebecca and Jenna as this week’s Wednesday musicians.

Irish acoustic band Lúnasa’s complex arrangements and unique sound reshaped the boundaries of traditional music, and have energized audiences the world over. Folk Roots magazine described the group, formed in 1997 from members of some of the greatest Irish groups of the previous decade, as the “Irish music dream team.”

One of the most influential bands in the history of traditional music, they’ve collaborated with Natalie Merchant, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, and Tim O’Brien and performed at the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, and Glastonbury Festival.

The highlight of the American leg of a 300 performance global tour was the special presentation at Carnegie Hall on January 6, 2017 on the 60th anniversary of Edith Piaf’s last performance at the famous venue.

In two 45-minutes acts, the show narrates the rags-to-riches story of the Parisian singer’s career through her unforgettable songs, complemented by a visual tapestry of previously unreleased photographs and images of famous Parisian locations of the Edith Piaf era.

In 1941, the German physicist Werner Heisenberg made a strange trip to Copenhagen to see his old teacher and colleague, Niels Bohr.  These two Nobel Prize winning physicists had revolutionized atomic physics in the 1920’s with their work together on quantum mechanics and the uncertainly principle.  But now the two men were on opposite sides in a world war.

Take fun seriously! In this workshop Tara will facilitate playful, mixed media exploration to create imaginative artworks. With a variety of textures, colours and media to choose from, students will learn to relax and have fun with their work while also getting to know themselves better in the process. This is beginner to intermediate level for teens (13-17).

The Art Room: Let’s Keep Painting 🎨

Lily Morrow teaches painting with acrylics through weekly exercises that explore a variety of techniques such as mixed media, painting with squeegees, and brushwork. Topics like ‘the polka dot pop art pumpkin’ to ‘the 4-season tree’ will make learning how to paint fun and exciting.

The Art Room: Let's Keep Painting

Some of the topics covered:

  • Collage techniques on canvas
  • Painting with a squeegee
  • Non-traditional paint techniques
  • The 4-season tree.

All materials are provided within the workshop fee, and students should wear an apron or old shirt.
