Brent Mason’s Bob Dylan Birthday Bash 🥳

May 24, 2022 @ 7:30 am 9:00 pm

Part of the SPOTLIGHT SERIES, with Colin Fowlie, Montgomery Street Band, The Hypochondriacs, Grant Heckman, Jessica Rhaye and the Ramshackle Parade, and the Brent Mason Band.

Bob Dylan Birthday Bash

When Bob Dylan turned 69, Saint John musician Brent Mason decided to throw him a birthday party, inviting some of his friends to play a show singing songs from Dylan’s extensive catalogue. Twelve years later, this annual event continues and thrives, having moved from sold out clubs to larger venues. For the first time ever, Brent and company will be joined by local favourites to hold an event at the Fredericton Playhouse celebrating Bob Dylan’s 81st birthday!

Brent and his band are joined by Jessica Rhaye and the Ramshackle Parade and Grant Heckman as the core of the show, with appearances by a revolving roster of talented artists each year, ensuring new and exciting interpretations of the Bard of Hibbing’s songs each May. This year they will be joined by Fredericton favourites Colin Fowlie, the Montgomery Street Band and the Hypochondriacs Trio for what promises to be a night of music magic!

James Mullinger Is … Becoming Canadian 🇨🇦

May 20, 2022 @ 7:30 pm 9:00 pm

It’s official.

After eight years in Canada, James Mullinger is finally … Becoming Canadian!
And he’s written a show all about it.

James Mullinger portrait

A tale of immigration, confusion, love, wonder, joy, this new stand-up show (comprising new material as well as stories from the past decade) coincides with the release of James’ book (published by Goose Lane Editions) about his journey to New Brunswick which will be available for purchase at the show.

Since coming to NB in 2014, he has taken the country by storm. Sold out shows across the country, movies, TV shows, festivals, awards, stand-up specials he’s done it all. James has also raised more than half a million dollars for charities internationally. This show features brand new material for 2022 as well as remixed versions of some of his classic routines (which have notched up more than a million views on Facebook alone!).

Please be advised this performance contains occasional use of strong language.

Downchild Blues Band

Downchild Blues Band 50th Anniversary Show 🎷

May 10, 2022 @ 7:30 pm 10:00 pm

The Downchild Blues Band is excited to finally play their 50th anniversary show at the Fredericton Playhouse featuring special guests Matt Minglewood and Jenie Thai.

Downchild Blues Band

“There would be no Blues Brothers if it weren’t for Downchild”- Dan Aykroyd

One of Canada’s exciting, young up and coming blues talents, JENIE THAI will be opening the show. The 3X Maple Blues Award nominee made a major splash with Downchild in 2019 on their West coast swing, lighting up the stage with her stellar piano playing and singing on original material from her latest album “Night On Fire.”

Downchild experienced some unexpected changes during the two year pause due to the pandemic, including the loss of their long-time keyboard player Michael Fonfara (Lou Reed), who sadly pass away in 202,1 as well as the retirement of their drummer of over twenty years, Mike Fitzpatrick. Thankfully for fans, the band was keen to keep performing and recruited former member, Jim Casson to fill the drum throne and Thunder Bay native Tyler Yarema was a natural fit on Piano. The band is excited to hit the road with the new lineup and are sounding and performing better than ever!

Downchild is of course the inspiration for Hollywood stars Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi’s hit film The Blues Brothers. In fact, two Downchild songs “I Got Everything I Need (Almost)” and “Shotgun Blues” are found on The Blues Brothers smash album Briefcase Full of Blues.

The Longest 50th Anniversary Tour is dedicated to Michael Fonfara and to all of the many Downchild fans who patiently held on to their tickets from shows that were postponed in 2020.

Downchild has just released their 50th Anniversary Live At The Toronto Jazz Festival DVD, featuring special guests Dan Aykroyd, Paul Shaffer, David Wilcox, Kenny Neal, Gene Taylor and Erja Lyytinen, that was filmed at their 50th Anniversary Tour kick off shows in Toronto on June 22, 2019. The band shut down Bloor Street in Toronto for this once in a lifetime performance and torn it up for a magical night that was thankfully captured on tape by award winning producer, Joel Goldberg.

Downchild is a Canadian blues institution with an international reputation. They have shared the stage with blues icons B.B. King, Buddy Guy and John Lee Hooker to name a few and have performed around the world, leaving fans thoroughly entertained wherever the go.

Masks required for entrance into Government House, 51 Woodstock Road, Fredericton, NB.

NBCCD announces the 15th annual jewellery/metal arts exhibition, STERLING, generously sponsored by Gallery 78 and hosted at Government House. This year’s exhibition opens to the public at the official residence of New Brunswick’s Lieutenant Governor on May 13, 2022 and runs until June 1, 2022, Monday-Friday, 10am to 4pm.

“We’d like to welcome you back to Government House and our annual exhibition. It’s always a surprise,” said recent Governor General’s Award winner and longtime NBCCD instructor Brigitte Clavette. “People come and they love it!”

Students from all levels of NBCCD’s jewellery/metal arts program will showcase selected best works from basic production work, silversmithing, collection pieces, sculpture, and fine one-of-a-kind pieces. Select works will be available for sale starting May 13 here. The exhibition will also feature in-progress pieces as an opportunity to educate the public about the creative process and care that goes into the fine craft of metal arts.

The exhibition doubles as a competition with one student winning a solo exhibition show at Gallery 78 and a cash prize.

Studio Head Kristyn Cooper said this year’s diploma graduates have been a dream to work with. “This is one of the hardest working groups of students we’ve ever seen. They’re not only talented in their craft but have become a family. They have a very strong sense of support, friendly competition, and work ethic.”

Clavette agreed, “This group is going to be hard to say goodbye to. They took in everything we brought to them and embraced every challenge. It was hard work.”

Cooper and Clavette look forward to celebrating the success and determination of all jewellery/metal arts students who navigated their studies throughout a pandemic in the mentally- and physically-demanding metal arts program.

Ceramics Exhibition: Still Grounded 🏺

May 5, 2022 @ 4:00 pm 6:00 pm

Presenting Still Grounded — a ceramics exhibition at the George Fry Gallery. May 5—May 27, 2022.

Hands at a potter's wheel.

Join us for the public opening from 4-6pm on May 5

Masks required for entrance to the George Fry Gallery, 408 Queen Street, Fredericton, N.B.

NBCCD’s first ceramics show in four years is unearthed at the George Fry Gallery on May 5.

Ceramics Studio Head, Liz Demerson and her faculty, technicians, and students are ready to open the doors to the public to reveal new works after a long hiatus due in part to the pandemic. In the spring of 2020, the doors of the college shut when the COVID-19 lockdown hit New Brunswick. This included the George Fry Gallery.

“Our show was slated for May 2020,” said Demerson, “and we were shut down because of the pandemic. Our last showing was in September 2018, and it was called 900 Degrees and Rising. It featured a variety of New Brunswick Artists.”

Each of the eight studios at the college have an exhibition in the George Fry Gallery bi-annually. The studios can choose to exhibit student work, work from alumni to inspire students by showing them successful practice in their field from graduates of their program, or choose to show work from invited professional artists in their field, also to inspire and teach students.

Demerson said this exhibition is about the last two years of learning and in making pots. With many ups and downs throughout our pandemic-ridden ceramics journey, this exhibition presents an overall feeling of that experience.

“Here, you will see the drive to create, the love of the material and the process, the persistence and tenacity in our personalities and the obsession with clay and pots. We all have the ceramics bug, and we just can’t stop,” said Demerson.

The students and staff in the Ceramics Studio are excited for the future and feel proud of our accomplishments, she said. The cultural trend towards local is invigorating and encouraging and we can’t wait to be a part of that trend as people realize the increased quality of life achieved by using local handmade ceramics.

“Here is the heart and soul of the last two years of our lives. Here is what got us through this mess of a time,” said Demerson. “Here are our pots.”

“We’re really excited to return after what felt like such a long wait,” said Festival co-organizer, Zach Atkinson. “This announcement celebrates so many local and regional artists, and we’re so grateful to bring this incredible array of talent to Fredericton. Our community has been a great source of support during this time, so we strive to highlight local artists and small businesses downtown, as a way to say thanks after the difficult winter hiatus.”

Organizers are working with both existing venues and new spaces, to create a concert experience that ensures a safe, comfortable environment for all artists, patrons, volunteers, and support staff. Venue-specific COVID-19 safety protocols will be detailed at the point of purchase, as well as at www.shiveringsongs.com

A midwinter celebration of songwriting and storytelling, and flagship partner of Fredericton FROSTival, Shivering Songs hosts internationally renowned artists in historic and intimate spaces throughout Downtown Fredericton, on the unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik people.
