The 2022 edition of Word Feast: Fredericton’s Literary Festival will take place from Tuesday, October 11 to Monday, October 17. The theme of our 6th edition is History and Healing: personal stories, Queer History, healing from grief and trauma and, in November, military history.
We will bring back our children’s menu and feature great new specials as well as favourite items on both our dine-in and take-out menus. This major fundraiser brings together an excellent selection of fine art and fine craft contributions by well-known and emerging New Brunswick artists and artisans. All proceeds from For Arts Sake go to support the on-going programs of Fredericton Arts Alliance, including FAA’s summer artist residencies and FAA’s Arts News, a free weekly newsletter which lets subscribers know what is happening in the local arts scene.
PhD student Amber McMillan will be launching her new poetry collection THIS IS A STICKUP on October 6th. All are welcome to attend this exciting event with poetry readings, giveaways, and a cash bar.
Celebrate the launch of Amber McMillan’s new collection This Is a Stickup! This launch party will feature readings from Amber and Fredericton poets Sue Sinclair, Triny Finlay, Emily Skov-Nielsen, Mary Germaine, and Meghan Kemp-Gee. This Is a Stickup is a heart-stopping second collection of poetry from Amber McMillan. In fierce, lonely and elegant lines McMillan writes of violence, of the sea and of love. Fish and sparrows crowd in the edges of these poems where grandfathers are lost at sea and friends are lost along the way. A strange man peers in her window and flames consume swing sets, while McMillan unravels some of the deep griefs of the world, creating space for the reader to grieve alongside her. Intimate and powerful, these poems are unforgettable.
Chris Thomas, Toronto-born, current NB resident, is a mixed-media artist, and has been involved in the Arts since 1998. With a background in graphic design, and several clothing line ventures under his belt – he was most heavily involved in branding band merch, logos, show-posters, and handbill design in the Toronto art community. Over the years, Chris has worked with artists John Legend, Ali Shaheed Muhammad of Tribe Called Quest, Shad, and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
Prior to relocating to the Maritimes, Chris hosted an exhibit called “Hood Times” at GoodFellas Gallery featuring dioramas of run-down city blocks – not of the typical variety though as each block represented about 2000 sq. feet of inner-city blight at a 1:150 scale.
Chris is inspired by his surroundings (the sights, the smells, the souls of a city) as well as by hip-hop, inner-city life and artful expression. He has always felt that urban decay was a fascinating phenomenon, especially in its capacity to completely redefine the character of a neighbourhood. Chris’ latest muse is an imaginary Fredericton – a conceptualization that represents a thriving metropolis inclusive of everyone’s favourite and familiar places – made completely of LEGO.
Chris will be showing his exhibit at The Cap on October 1st -sponsored by Moonshine Creek; the show runs from 1pm-8pm upstairs. After which, Kill Chicago will play the afterparty downstairs.
Illuminate Arts Festival is a free outdoor event highlighting art and performance, from dusk to dawn, on unceded Wolastoqey Territory in Downtown Fredericton, NB. Guided by a festival map, visitors can explore the city in a new light, experiencing an array of pop-up art installations, performances, interactive art displays, and more.
Illuminate shines a light on a diversity of lived experiences, narratives, and ideas through public art and performance. Illuminate seeks to engage audiences, providing new and accessible opportunities to interact with the arts and explore local environments, inspired by the global phenomenon Nuit Blanche.
In this workshop, Wei Qing will share tips and tricks for their work and studies in the art of Stage Management.  The workshop will explore the role of Stage Manager in the production team, uncover key skills and tools that enable a stage management team to thrive and understanding the importance of management in a room. Collaboration, curiosity, and connection will root the discussions in this workshop.
Wei Qing will come to the workshop with key points, stories and paperwork to share – but the workshop will also be adapted to those who attend and the interests of the room. Wei Qing is also interested in having discussions about decolonizing the practice of stage management and invites anyone who’d like to talk about stage management or the process of creating theatre to attend! Â

Founded in 2020, the Demonic Brilliance Film Festival is an international horror film festival brought to you by Creeker Films and Steam Powered Studios. As horror filmmakers ourselves, we strive to highlight horror films and the people who make them!
Explore the work of photographer Chris Donovan in Stay Solid or Move West, a photography exhibit at the George Fry Gallery. An opening ceremony will be held September 22 at 4:30pm.
Visit the exhibit from September 22 to October 19, from 10am to 4pm at the George Fry Gallery at 408 Queen St.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Stay Solid or Move West is a photographic project and book by Saint John-based photographer Chris Donovan. The work is a diaristic account of his purposefully displaced coming-of-age, as well as a subconscious look at intergenerational trauma, love, and sense of belonging.
