Catherine MacLellan Christmas Tour featuring Nick Gauthier. "I love the coziness of winter. It's a time for gathering around fires and feasts. Christmas shows bring in all of that for me, the balance between joyful silliness and the sacred. It makes me feel like a child again."

JUNO Award-winning singer-songwriter Catherine MacLellan is bringing her Christmas Show to the Maritimes this year. Sharing beloved classics, self-penned holiday songs and some rare gems, Catherine will be accompanied on stage by special guest Tanya Davis and guitarist Nick Gauthier.

Catherine says, “I’ve always loved the music of Christmas, and the fun times singing in kitchens with friends and family over a glass of eggnog. That is the energy I’ll be bringing with me, hoping that people sing along and catch some of that holiday spirit!”

Last year, Catherine released her first Christmas album, a self-engineered and self-produced EP, which includes the original single (“Calling You Home (for the Holidays)”) and three beloved classics (“In The Bleak Midwinter”, “Blue Christmas”, and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”).

“I love the coziness of winter, it’s a time for introspection but also a time for gathering around fires and feasts. Christmas shows bring in all of that for me, the balance between joyful silliness and the sacred. It makes me feel like a child again,” says Catherine.

Harry Thurston, Thaddeus Holownia, and Sonya Malaborza. Sunday, December 11, 2022, at 3:30pm, Westminster Books, 88 York St., Fredericton.

We invite you to attend ICARUS, FALLING OF BIRDS: A Conversation & Reading, presented by UNB English, UNB French, & the UNB Arts Centre in partnership with Westminster Books & Goose Lane Editions, featuring Harry Thurston, Thaddeus Holownia & Sonya Malaborza.

In September of 2013, thousands of migratory songbirds perished after being lured like moths to a hundred-foot-high flare at the Canaport Liquefied Natural Gas plant in Saint John, NB. Photographer Thaddeus Holownia and poet Harry Thurston memorialize the fateful event in Icarus, Falling of Birds & Icare, chute d’oiseaux, translated by Sonya Malaborza. Photographer, poet, and translator will discuss their collaborative process and the importance of addressing the climate crisis through art. Their conversation will be followed by a bilingual reading.

HARRY THURSTON is a poet, award-winning journalist, and author of more than two dozen books of poetry and non-fiction. He is a mentor in the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction program at University of King’s College, Halifax.

THADDEUS HOLOWNIA is emeritus professor of fine arts at Mount Allison University. His photographs have been exhibited and collected at museums throughout North America and Europe.

Since venturing into the field of literary translation some twenty years ago, SONYA MALABORZA has translated several contemporary poets, playwrights, essayists, and novelists into French. Translations to her credit include Ami McKay’s The Birth House (L’accoucheuse de Scots Bay), which was shortlisted for the 2020 Governor General’s Literary Award.

In 1974 when Bob Marley went solo, on the brink of international stardom, he surprised the music community by choosing as his lead guitarist the American-born Al Anderson. It was Anderson’s stunning lead work on such classics as No Woman, No Cry, and Three O’Clock Road Block that first alerted rock fans to The Wailers music.

Members of the Original Wailers

Anderson’s musical achievements with Bob Marley & The Wailers include the platinum award winning albums ‘Live at the Lyceum’, ‘Babylon by Bus’ and ten times platinum album ‘Legend’. The George Fry Gallery presents Pull Back the Curtain, a group exhibition by the NBCCD Drawing Studio. December 8, 2022 - Jan 17, 2023. Opening Dec 8, 4-6pm

Pull Back the Curtain ✍️

December 8, 2022 @ 4:00 pm 6:00 pm

Join us on December 8 when we officially open Pull Back the Curtain, an exhibition of the creation and design process that emphasizes drawing, organized by the NBCCD Drawing Studio, and studio head, Christina Thomson.

The George Fry Gallery presents Pull Back the Curtain, a group exhibition by the NBCCD Drawing Studio. December 8, 2022 - Jan 17, 2023. Opening Dec 8, 4-6pm

About “Pull Back the Curtain”

Drawing is vital for design work. It’s the early drafts of an article; the ingredients of a tasty treat. Your bowl, scarf, business card, jeans, and necklace started as a scribble. NBCCD’s Drawing Studio intends to ‘Pull Back the Curtain’ on this process in an exhibition of the same name at the George Fry Gallery (408 Queen St., Fredericton) with works from all college studios, opening December 8, 2022, and running until January 17, 2023. Open 10am-4pm. Masks required.

Come and see an exhibition of fine craft with a twist. Instead of viewing a polished final product, peek behind the scenes and see the process through layers of preliminary sketches, drawings, brainstorming, and ideas presented with the finished artwork. The George Fry Gallery is a space for showcase; but equally important, a space for learning and history.

“Drawing from observation starts with re-considering our habits of perception and how we interpret the world around us,” says NBCCD Drawing Studio Head and Instructor Christina Thomson. “Are you really seeing? What is your brain editing out? Can you understand the forms around you in a deeper way? “
Every student at the New Brunswick College of Craft & Design (NBCCD) studies drawing, along with 2D and 3D design, colour study, and other foundational art and design courses. Students build on these foundational skills as they continue into a diploma program: 3D Digital Design, Ceramics, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Jewellery/Metals Arts, Photography/Videography, Textile Design, Wabanaki Visual Arts.

It all starts with a sketch. Analog and digital drawing strategies are customized practice for each studio. Jewellery/Metal Arts students detail renderings and measurements for a client’s ring; a ceramic student designs various forms of mugs and vessels before throwing the clay; textile designers create patterns through exploratory gridwork; videographers storyboard their scenes before shooting—it all comes back to foundational drawing skills and translating ideas to paper.

“We want to see with fresh eyes so that we can create imagery that is unique,” says Thomson. “A lot of drawing happens in your mind before it makes it to your hand.”

Admire the countless hours of effort and strategy that go into our daily items and peek inside the minds of the artists creating them from concept to creation.
