10th Annual Square Foot Show at the Grand Manan Art Gallery 🔳🦶🏾

September 10, 2023 @ 8:00 am September 24, 2023 @ 11:00 pm

The 10th Annual Square Foot Show will be the grand finale of the 2023 season at the Grand Manan Art Gallery. This show is popular with both artists and visitors to the Gallery. The objective is to pack as much punch as possible into one square foot of space. We welcome a variety of artwork — paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, ceramics, wood, and mixed media pieces, but there is one stipulation. The outside dimensions of the artwork (including any frame) must measure 12 inches by 12 inches.

Grand Manan Art Gallery Square Foot Show

This event is a major fund raiser for the gallery. Up to four pieces may be submitted, and all the artwork will be priced at $200. There will be an entry fee of $10 per piece, and a modest 25% commission on sales. Gallery visitors will be encouraged to vote for their favourite pieces, and People’s Choice Awards of $200, $150 and $100 will be given for the three most popular works in the show.

If you wish to participate in the Square Foot Show, download an entry form from our website and submit it to the Gallery office by September 4. The Entry Fee of $10 per submission is payable by e-transfer gmag2121@gmail.com, or cheque made payable to the Gallery and mailed to the Treasurer:

Reception: Refocus on Fibre Art & Glimpses of St. Andrews 👩‍🎨

May 6, 2022 @ 5:00 pm 7:00 pm

Reception at Sunbury Shores Art and Nature Centre in St. Andrews Friday, May 6, 5pm – 7pm, to open two exhibits, Fibre Art Network: Refocus on Fibre Art and Dawn Steeves: Glimpses of Saint Andrews.

Fibre Art Network: Refocus on Fibre Art

Through these challenging times and search for higher meaning in a post-lockdown world, these artists put their energies into exploring new possibilities in their respective fibre art practices and created works beyond the utilitarian. In their effort to integrate non-traditional materials into their rugs, quilts, felts and sculptures, they attempt to communicate dreams, movement, and colour to deal with the reality of our lives. In some ways, these fibre artists express this through the search for beauty in nature and comfort in textured forms.

Dawn Steeves: Glimpses of Saint Andrews

In this collection of oil and ink on paper, wood, and canvas, Dawn Steeves presents impressions of Kingsbrae Gardens and Salty Towers. She created these works during a residency at Kingsbrae International Residency for the Arts (KIRA) in September of 2021.

Image of an oil painting of two brown bottles on a windowsill. Text reads, " Glimpses of Saint Andrews, May 6-May 28, 2022. 139 Water Street, Saint Andrews, NB, E5B 1A7, (506) 529-3386, info@sunburyshores.org

“This work is a series of snippets or partial scenes which combine to create a visual adventure. I strive to create an experience for the viewer which they can explore. I am interested in creating mood using a particular palette and combination of colour which is not quite real, tending to lean to the warm side, reminiscent of old colour photographs, giving a feeling of nostalgia. The subjects in my work are often truncated or extreme closeups, scenes not quite filled in, which emulates the way memories sometimes create an incomplete picture of the past, or the way dreams provide only a partial view of a place or thing.” – Dawn Steeves
