Artist in Residence: Natalie Sappier-Samaqani Cocahq Community Sharing Circle

September 20, 2018 @ 6:30 pm

Artist in Residence: Natalie Sappier-Samaqani Cocahq
Community Sharing Circle Sept 18, 6:30pm (free event)

Hi!  My name is Natalie Sappier, I am a Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) Indigenous storyteller from Tobique First Nation, New Brunswick. I explore storytelling through music, creative writing, spoken word and visual art.  I am currently the artist in residence at Sunbury Shores working on my new play. One of the big subjects in my play is learning about my Ancestors: my Indigenous Ancestry of my mother and the unknown ancestor I carry through my father. I grew up on a First Nation all my life. It is the upbringing that I know. But I know my Indigenous brothers and sisters travelled and hunted throughout these lands. I stand in the St Andrew waters and I know I am still home. For most of my path I have been telling the stories through my Indigenous lens. Knowing there is unknown ancestry in me I am curious to know how to bring these two worlds together. To bridge that relationship,  I would like to invite all of you to come into a circle of sharing where we can talk about our ancestry and our connections with the lands and waters. We can share through song, stories and/or visual work.  You are also invited to come in and listen and be part of the circle in that way.

Artist Talk, Sept 20, 6:30pm (by donation)

Please join Natalie Sappier on Thursday, September 20 for an artist talk about her work, creative process, and experiences at Sunbury Shores Arts & Nature Centre at 6:30pm. Entrance is by donation and all are welcome. Learn about her current projects!

Natalie Sappier-Samaqani Cocahq is known for her contemporary symbolic motif storytelling through painting and designs.  Samaqani describes her way of artistic expression as “dancing of the four directions” which represents emotions, dance, of spirit and of song through Wabanaki roots. Currently, Samaqani has been exploring with sharing stories through performance arts because she feels that her stories need to be louder then her painting can speak. Her first play “Finding Wolastoq Voice” was part of Theatre New Brunswick’s 2017-2018 touring season.  The one-person show is a theatre dance hybrid included a full body of music created by the artist. Sunbury Shores will be the first residency she will be entering to focus on her new performance work “Half-Breed”.
