ArtsLink NB is now accepting applications for our mentorship pilot program. Artists of all disciplines who live in Atlantic Canada face the unique challenge of pursuing their practice from a marginalized area of the country. Building networks through lifelong engagement in peer-to-peer and mentor-to-mentee discourse is vital to pursuing a career for any arts professional, but the need is especially high in New Brunswick.
In response to this, ArtsLink NB is now launching an intensive 12-month mentorship pilot program that connects artists who wish to share their professional experience and guidance with other artists. This pilot program will build on the traditional mentorship model, with an open door to lateral and cross-disciplinary collaborations between mentor and mentee.
Each participant (mentee) will be paired with a mentor for a year-long mentorship. 10 artists will be selected for a mentorship with a mentor whose experience and knowledge can enhance that of the mentee. Mentorship candidates will be practicing arts professionals who aspire to gain knowledge and skills to expand their current practice. The mentor’s role is to advise on professional activities and guide the mentee in a career-building process through peer-to-peer dialogue.
Application Criteria:
Successful candidates must be a member of ArtsLink whose primary residence is in New Brunswick. Mentors may reside anywhere in Canada.
Artists at any stage of their career are encouraged to apply.
Applicants must have the time over the next year to commit three to four hours a month to this mentorship.
Applicants must detail how a year-long mentorship would positively impact their practice.
Applicants do not need to have a mentor in mind, but are encouraged to make suggestions.
If Selected:
Each of the 10 mentees in the initial cohort will complete a pre-mentorship survey detailing their goals and expectations for the mentorship.
Based on each survey, potential mentors will be proposed by ArtsLink.
Mentors are contacted to determine their interest.
Available mentors are contracted by ArtsLink NB
Mentors receive remuneration of $1,500 to be disbursed in two installments to help ensure satisfactory performance throughout the program.
An additional $500 is available as a discretionary fund for travel, materials, or to attend workshops together, etc. This will be paid by mentor or mentee upfront, and reimbursed upon submission of receipt.
Mentors and mentees will meet virtually or in person, for an average of 3 to 4 hours per month.
At the 6-month mark, mentors and mentees will each complete a short report detailing the work they have done, whether they feel they are progressing to their stated goal; and comment on the success/challenges of the mentor-mentee relationship.
At the conclusion of the 12-month period, a final report will be submitted by both mentor and mentee to gauge the success of the mentorship program. These reports will detail the progress made on the goals established at the outset.
Timeline:
Friday, March 17, 2023: Call out for participants announced
Friday, March 31, 2023: Deadline for application submission
Wednesday, April 5, 2023: Mentees will hear back on the status of their application

Join us in welcoming Jessica Dunphy (she/her) to the ArtsLink NB team as our Interim Programming Director!
Some of you may have already met Jessica, as she’s hit the ground running by participating in our ongoing CATAPULT Arts Accelerator and in the recent One 2 One sessions.
Here’s a bit about Jessica:
“Jessica’s passion is working in the arts in Canada, especially in her home province of New Brunswick. She has spent years in Halifax, New York, Vancouver and Toronto where she appeared in numerous plays, independent films, and performance art pieces along with directing for the stage and writing for radio and television.”
“Her love of the arts, especially film, culminated in 9 exciting years at the Toronto International Film Festival where she honed her arts administration, events, and community engagement skills. In her spare time you can find her mauling her poor dog, watching Criterion Channel, and searching local bakeries for the perfect chocolate chip cookie.”
Social media is an extremely integral part of your art business, but it can be extremely overwhelming. Where should you focus your energy? What’s the difference between Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter? Should you be on Snapchat or TikTok? How do you avoid endless scrolling? Cait Milberry will answer your questions and help you develop a sustainable strategy that works for you.
Cait is a strategic advisor and marketing manager with over a decade of experience working with brands, bands, and various businesses across North America. Her focus is building and implementing sustainable strategies and creating content that backs them up.

Are you in interested in applying for this year’s Cross-Cultural Creation Residency?
Potential applicants are invited to join Jericho Knopp, Programming Director with ArtsLink NB, for a short presentation about the residency followed by Q&A session.
The 10-day residency will take place at Metepenagiag Heritage Park and Outdoor Lodge, and artists will have the opportunity to work on a personal project as well as exchange creative energy and cultural wisdom with eight other artists.
The theme of this year’s Cross-Cultural Creation residency will be Netakulimk. This is a teaching shared by Elder Albert Marshall of Esksoni First Nation, who will join the artists during the residency. Netakulimk is described as “the use of the natural bounty provided by the Creator for the self-support and well-being of the individual and the community.” Western thinkers might understand this to mean simply “sustainability” but as Elder Albert will teach us, Netakulimk encompasses core aspects of humanness; interconnectedness; and the four core values of respect, responsibility, relationship, and reciprocity.
Location
Metepenagiag Heritage Park and Outdoor Lodge and the surrounding land and water will ground artists in the natural environment and the deep connections to land and place experienced by Indigenous peoples. This place-based experience, steeped in the history of a “village of 30 centuries,” will provide artists with opportunities to reflect on the meaning of ancestry, their own ancestral lines, and the relationships between past, present, and future generations. Artists will be welcome to walk the grounds, participate in a group paddle on the Miramichi River, harvest materials in support of their artistic practice from the woods and water, and create in and of a natural environment as people have done in this place for thousands of years.
The selected artists will stay in Metepenagiag Outdoor Lodge, each in a private room. Meals and housekeeping will be provided to the artists to maximize the time they are able to devote to their practice, to time alone, and voluntary group activities. We will host evening fires, storytelling, and other Indigenous cultural offerings.
Residency Goals
To encourage artistic exploration and the creation of new works, by creating in healthy conditions conducive to artist creation
To contribute to the increasing quality of artistic work in NB
To facilitate collaboration and the sharing of expertise
To create significant cultural bridges between the different communities in the province
To facilitate meetings between the artists and the public and help the public better understand the creation process.
The works that are created may be presented publicly in 2024. The artists will be given complete artistic freedom, and they will be asked to participate in a one-day Open Studio on June 24, 2023 to allow the community to learn about their creative processes.
The Selected Artists Will Be Expected To:
Provide their own art supplies
Interact with the other participating artists
Publicly present their creations at the end of the residence in an exhibition
Submit a final report and evaluation to Mawi’Art: Wabanaki Artist Collective, ArtsLink NB, and l’AAAPNB,within 30 days of the end of the residency.
