Amy Ash’s deeply collaborative art Perennial Bodies: Collective Regrowth and Other Possibilities is about gathering to share energy and experience, seeding ideas and positive action.
What can we learn from the kinship of tangled roots and whispering rhizomes, the sharing of re-sources for mutual flourishing, and the vibrant re-emergence after a long winter of rest?
A curiosity-driven event, we will come together to make and document experimental artworks that engage bodies fun, safe, and unusual ways. Encircling ideas of care, natural cycles, and connectivity with the more-than-human world, this workshop will be organized less like a class and more like a collaborative art-lab.
Let’s create a safe space for play, absurdity, deep attention, and contemplation, while imagining a future where we flourish in our understanding that we are not just in the world, but of it.
If we can listen to the world deeply enough, with our whole bodies, maybe we could seep past the divisions we’ve made and become a collective body, a super-organism of sensation.
Open to all levels of art-making experience, from pro to never-crafted-before —prompts, guidance, and support will be available whenever needed.

Location: In person, AX Workshop Room
Cost: $85

A 5-day intensive workshop painting in oil is for artists with at least some painting experience although all levels will be accommodated and will benefit. A wide variety of painting techniques and approaches will be explored. Maggie will demonstrate various ways to “build” your paintings so that the results are complex and reflect and enhance the intent of your narratives. Artists will be encouraged to step out of their comfort zone and to take their work to places of new discovery and levels of excellence.
There will be an emphasis placed on understanding the underlying construction of all sound work. Subject matter will be up to individual artists and working from life and/or photographs will be equally encouraged. Participants are asked to arrive with a variety of possible ideas to explore. Maggie will provide prompts and suggestions for anyone interested in a more exercise-based approach. Participants will have the option to develop one piece or several pieces throughout the week.
Contemporary painters and artists of historical significance and will be discussed and incorporated into all lessons, providing inspiration throughout the week.
Note: If you have never taken Maggie’s Colour Workshop you are encouraged to do so (if possible) the week prior to the Painting Workshop.

This 4-day intensive workshop is an information blast on all aspects of colour and colour mixing as they relate to painting. No matter your medium of choice (oil, acrylic, gouache, water-colour, pastel…), this information is applicable to all. You will learn to mix colours swiftly and accurately; learn to achieve both dynamic and subtle colour in your work; learn to get more out of the colours you already have and to make smart choices when adding to your paint box. This class teaches you how to juggle all colour attributes – hue, value, temperature and chroma.
Most importantly, it explains how to alter only one aspect of a colour without altering other elements. You’ll learn how to reduce, maintain or heighten chroma and learn how to keep hues consistent while they are lightened or darkened through all modelling factors. You’ll learn why an understanding of colour temperature is critical to successful work.
We’ll explore a variety of palettes from the simplest to more complex. There will be many mixing demonstrations, application examples and time for the execution of small projects and exercises to ensure that you fully understand the information. This class is suitable for the beginner to the advanced painter.

The UNB Art Centre celebrates its 12th annual World Water Day exhibit with REFLECTIONS, an exhibit of work from 28 artists in the community, opening on March 24 at 5:00 pm. Since 2011, the UNB Art Centre has recognized World Water Day with a special exhibit or event that highlights the challenges that face society and the environment.
World Water Day is an initiative of the United Nations to bring awareness to the importance of water resources and their sustainable management. Since its inception in 1993, the project has gathered momentum and participants from all over the world, each inspired to educate and activate their communities through a variety of projects.
While only 28 artists were selected to showcase their work in REFLECTIONS, 78 artists answered the call for submissions, responding to the theme by reflecting on their own relationship with water and the waterways of New Brunswick. For some, the artwork was based on an intimate relationship with a particular pond or stream, others took a more global perspective and looked at how water is used, still others examined the various states of water and its potential. This exhibit features sculpture, video, installation, photography, and painting.
REFLECTIONS will be on view from March 24 through April 28, 2023, in the East and West Galleries of the UNB Art Centre. It can also be viewed online.
The UNB Art Centre is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. The galleries are open 9 am – 4 pm on weekdays and during special events. Admission is free to members of the public.
