Join us online or in-person on October 10th, 2024, for the workshop “Curating with Care: Exhibiting and Programming Sensitive Subject Matter in Galleries and Museums”.
Thursday, October 10, 2024 | 10am – 3pm
Hybrid Event: In-person at Guelph Civic Museum (52 Norfolk Street, Guelph ON), and online via Zoom.
Galleries, museums, and other sites of knowledge provide public access to stories of lived experiences told by artists/curators through exhibitions and programming. Cultural spaces are centers of learning and resources for understanding past and present-day lived experiences. Often, the stories include sensitive topics and difficult imagery. How can cultural organizations share these stories in a way that respects artists, creators, and visitors?
The workshop “Curating with Care: Exhibiting and Programming Sensitive Subject Matter in Galleries and Museums” will be an opportunity for curators, exhibition managers, programmers, academics, and other cultural professionals to learn and share best practices for exhibiting and programming artistic works with sensitive subject matter and themes.
Participants will obtain a greater understanding of curating sensitive materials to a broad public; develop and discuss the best practices for developing programming centered around artwork that covers sensitive and triggering topics; develop guidelines from workshop discussion to inform future policies for art gallery and museums; and gain insight on the ethics of sensitive subject matter in institutions’ collections.
Registration includes full-day attendance, a comprehensive toolkit for each participant to take away with them, and lunch.
