Strathbutler Award 2021

Since 1991, the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation has presented the Strathbutler Award to honor New Brunswick artists who have achieved personal excellence in any discipline of visual arts, while having had a distinctive impact on the cultural life of our province. Based on the unanimous recommendation of a professional, independent jury, interdisciplinary artist, Mathieu Léger is the 2021 recipient of the Strathbutler Award.

The jury characterized Léger as an internationally recognized conceptualist and minimalist, whose performances and interactions with his many and diverse audiences invite viewers to a deeper understanding of personal and collective identity. He mines history, science, and poetics to chart an informed and contemporary response to life’s journeys. Léger has demonstrated leadership through decades of work with IMAGO, l’Association des groupes en arts visuels francophones (AGAVF), Galerie Sans Nom, CARFAC Maritimes and the New Brunswick Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture. The vast scope of his ambulatory art practice coupled with his commitment to engaging New Brunswick audiences in performance art has made a significant contribution to the cultural ecosystem of the province.

The Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation is indebted to the work of the five members of the 2021 jury for their professional examination of all nomination packages.  Shannon Webb-Campbell, Editor Visual Art News; Erik Edson, Professor, Pierre Lassonde School of Fine Arts Mount Allison University; Julie Forgues, Directrice, Départment des arts visuels ,Université de Moncton,  James Mullinger, Editor Maritime Edit; Thomas Smart, Director/CEO Beaverbrook Art Gallery.

Diane Borsato: Cloud CollectionObservations of Clouds and Other Ephemeral Phenomena

The Owens is thrilled to announce the launch of Cloud Collection, a new work by artist Diane Borsato. Taking the form of a printed field guide, Cloud Collection takes readers on a cloud-watching expedition through the Owens Art Gallery’s permanent collection. The publication presents twenty-one works and accompanying texts that describe lightning, sun dogs, and various atmospheric effects. The full-colour, accordion-fold publication, available in both English and French, was designed by JP King and extends to become a 56” skyline.

At once playful and critical, Cloud Collection highlights the wonder of museum collections and the infinite ways that they can be combined, recombined, and mined for new meanings. Borsato’s approach sets aside conventional collection narratives, offering new points of entry and new ways to see the Owens permanent collection. It changes not only how we might look at art, but also the sky. Encouraging us to look up and attend to the world around us, it also asks us to consider the “climate” of our times.

Conceived at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when we were spending greater time indoors, and when people’s movements were limited due to public health restrictions, this project offers a window to the sky. Clouds can be observed from indoors, from balconies, backyards or on neighbourhood walks. Cloud watching does not require any travel or access beyond the space of one’s own home. While we slowly start venturing further afield and meeting with friends and family again, Cloud Collection prompts us to renew our sense of connection to the natural world and to share in the quiet pursuit of observing the weather.

Cloud Collection is accompanied by a bilingual virtual companion that extends both access and accessibility, offering screen-readable text, audio by the artist, large images, and visual descriptions of artworks. Free copies of Cloud Collection can be requested online.

In response to Cloud Collection, the Owens has launched the Instagram account, MySkyRightNow as a way to share immediate, unfiltered images of the sky as we see it right now—framed by office windows, glimpsed from the kitchen table, or stretching above us on an afternoon walk. Documenting the circumstances of time and place, this accumulation of images offers insight to the many ways we see the sky. Cloud Collection will also be supported by a forthcoming Teacher’s Resource.
Two hands hold open a double-page spread of Cloud Collection showing images of artworks and texts.
Cloud Collection was developed based on research for the work Cloud Party (2017), also by Diane Borsato, which was performed at the Art Gallery of Ontario with the support of the Creative Time Summit. All works were selected by the artist from the permanent collection of the Owens Art Gallery in 2021.

This project was made possible thanks to funding from the Strategic Initiatives Fund of the New Brunswick Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture and the Canada Council for the Arts.

The Musical Stage co. One Song Glory

One Song Glory is a fully subsidized six-weekend-long intensive youth musical theatre training program that builds community, self-confidence, and self-expression through a combination of new music creation, masterclasses, rehearsal, and online presentations. Our goal is to offer participants a professional rehearsal experience, the chance to create and design new work, provide industry insight and the guidance needed to develop a fruitful career in the performing arts.

Since its creation this program has been held in person in Toronto, offering Ontario teens a place to create, perform and celebrate their shared love of musical theatre. In 2020 we shifted to an all-digital format and invited participation from young artists from across Canada. We are thrilled to offer this program digitally again and continue growing our national network of young artists, providing students from across the country (who reside in remote, rural, and urban communities) access to fully subsidized training led by Canada’s leading musical artists.

We are proud to report that to date, over 1000 young Canadians have completed One Song Glory, without any cost to the participants. Past participants are now gracing international stages and Canadian concert halls including Broadway and the Stratford and Shaw Festivals.

Loretta Gould: Prayers for Our Lost Children

The Owens Art Gallery and the Indigenous Affairs Coordinator of Mount Allison University are thrilled to unveil Prayers for Our Lost Children (2021), a moving new work by prominent Mi’kmaq artist Loretta Gould. This work was commissioned in 2021 as the shameful story of Canada’s Residential School System continued to unfold. The painting serves as a poignant reminder of what Canada has stolen from Indigenous peoples and the ways in which this harm endures. At the same time, it underlines the vital continuity of Mi’kmaq art, culture, and spiritual practices, and the important role that women and children have played in maintaining this permanence. The painting, which is currently installed outside the office of the Indigenous Affairs Coordinator, is part of a series of public artworks commissioned by the Indigenous Affairs Coordinator and the Owens Art Gallery since 2019, including two works by Mi’kmaq artist, Pauline Young: She Lights the Way (2019), a stained-glass memorial to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and Wabanaki/People of the Dawn (2020), a flag design representing the Mi’kmaq territory of Mi’kma’ki as a living relationship between land and sea.

Loretta Gould is a Mi’kmaq quilter and painter who loves bright, beautiful colours. A self-taught artist, she grew up in Waycobah First Nation where she later raised five children with her husband Elliot Gould. She began making a living through her art quilts but, when her sewing machine broke in 2013, she decided to try her hand at painting. She’s been painting ever since. Loretta’s dream is to share her art with the world. For her, art is a way to get her spiritual feelings on canvas. Please visit the artist’s website: www.mikmaq-artist.com/collections
