Robbie Tucker Album Release Robbie Tucker Builds a Time Machine to Meet The Beatles. New Brunswick artist conjures a fantastical world with new album “Blue Candy”. He’s been compared to Paul McCartney before. But now it seems that Robbie Tucker has gone back in time and stolen their sound before it formed. Don’t be fooled – you won’t be hearing any Beatles knock-offs on Robbie Tucker’s Blue Candy – but you will wonder if Paul and Ringo didn’t have a baby, raise him in secret, and teach him to make records. +++ info > photo credit: robbie tucker

Yvonne Singer, Waiting… still waiting, 2021, banners Photo: Lucas Morneau
Yvonne Singer: Waiting… still waiting Umbrella Projects is pleased to present Waiting… still waiting, a temporary public art installation by artist Yvonne Singer. This project consists of six banners installed at intervals on Sackville’s York and Lorne Streets. Each banner sequence starts with the word “waiting,” in handwritten script, followed by a second banner that reads “still waiting.” These open-ends phrases, inspired by the phenomenon of subvocalization (silent, internal speech), evoke a wide range of associations. In the artist’s words, “Waiting…. still waiting encapsulates the current moment of the pandemic and the feeling of being in a state of suspended animation; waiting to get test results, waiting for a vaccine, waiting for the end of the pandemic and the restrictions to our daily lives. So much of our lives involves waiting, from the mundane waiting in line at the grocery store or waiting for the rain to end, to significant waiting, like waiting for the results of a pregnancy test or a cancer diagnosis… We are endlessly waiting for something….”
Yvonne Singer was born in Budapest, Hungary. She received a BA in English Literature from McGill University, Montreal, and an MFA Honours from York University, Toronto. She also did additional studies at the Ontario College of Art and Design. Singer is a full Professor at York University in the Department of Visual Art and Art History and the former Graduate Program Director in Visual Arts. She is a practising artist with an active national and international exhibition record. Her installation works employ multi-media techniques, often with cryptic texts, to articulate cultural and psychological issues of disjuncture and perception. Singer is particularly interested in everyday language and the intersection of public and private histories. Recent exhibitions include writing a gesture (Katzman Contemporary), Mother Tongue (Varley Art Gallery), Picturing Wellness (McMaster Museum of Art), The Game of Life; 1 step forward, 10 stepsbackwards (art souterrain and Nuit Blanche, Montreal), jst wrds (Cambridge Art Galleries), I do, I undo, Iredo (Critical Mass, Port Hope) IIII wa wa want (Convenience Gallery and the Gladstone Hotel), and just in time (or hanging by a thread) (Loop Gallery, Toronto). In 2011, Singer was invited by curator Dr. Sarat Maharaj to present work at Goteborg International Contemporary Art Biennial, Goteborg, Sweden. Her work is in several museum collections. www.yvonnesinger.com

Saint John, NB (Wednesday, May 26, 2021) – The team responsible for AREA 506, New Brunswick’s premiere celebration of local music, culture and goods, today announced their format, site plan and schedule to bring live music back to the Port City for 2021.
“After several months of planning, we are excited to announce our pivot plan for 2021” says Ray Gracewood, AREA 506 Founder and Chairperson. “This year’s format will look a little different and really puts the health and safety of our volunteers, artists and attendees at the forefront. We are ecstatic with what our planning committee has been able to create with the support of an amazing group of partners and stakeholders” continued Gracewood.
This year’s plan will extend the summer with a ten-part concert series beginning Friday, July 16 and running until Saturday, August 14. All shows will have limited tickets and will be available as six or ten person pods intended for attendees to remain in the comfort of their own social groups. Concerts will be hosted every Friday and Saturday evening, with gates opening at 5pm for each event to encourage staggered entry. Opening acts will begin at 8pm, with headline acts scheduled to hit the stage at 930pm. Attendees are encouraged to book early, as pods are likely to sell out very quickly.
The Waterfront Concert Series will take place on Long Wharf, a marquee location on the Saint John Waterfront and host to AREA 506 from 2016 to 2018.
“The location is perfect, not only because it feels like home, but also because of the space it affords us to encourage social distancing and to create a really unique pod-based environment for this year’s event” says Gracewood. “The site planning process has been a challenge as we’ve never organized an event like this, but I’m excited because the design is really starting to feel like everyone will get their own mini-VIP section”.
The project could not have happened without the support of a core group of public and private sponsors, led by Envision Saint John: The Regional Growth Agency.
“We’re incredibly excited to work with the AREA 506 team to make the Waterfront Concert Series a reality” says Paulette Hicks, CEO of Envision Saint John. “As a founding partner of AREA 506, we knew that the team would rise to the challenge of developing an innovative experience that’s unique and cool, true to its brand, but also safe and responsible”.
Final talent lineup and schedule for the 2021 Waterfront Concert Series will be announced on Friday, May 28 with tickets going on sale Thursday, June 3. Exclusive pre-sale will be made available to AREA 506 newsletter members beginning Tuesday, June 2 – sign up at area506.ca.

QuaranZINE Library TagMay 24-28Over the next five days, the Owens Art Gallery’s Teeny Tiny Zine Library will be playing a game of tag with Mount Allison’s Independent Zine Review, as we highlight and share zines from our collections. We’ll be exploring the zine scene in Sackville and various zine themes. Follow us and join in the fun as we pass the conversation back and forth each morning and afternoon.
This series is part of ongoing programming at the Owens to activate our Zine Library. The Teeny Tiny Zine Library collection contains nearly 200 DIY publications bringing attention to stories and voices rarely represented in the mainstream and artists who explore the creative possibilities of the book form.
Due to COVID-19, our Zine Library is currently not available to the public, but it can usually be found in our lobby next to a comfy chair.
Teeny Tiny Zine LibraryThe Owens Art Gallery’s Teeny Tiny Zine Library is an ever-growing collection of zines, artists’ books and multiples, independent comics, and handmade publications. The collection was created to archive and promote the small but mighty form of the zine, with a special focus on Sackville-made zines and the work of Mount Allison Fine Arts students, Sackville artists, and community youth.
Mount Allison Independent Zine ReviewThe MTA Independent Zine Review is a new and growing collection that lives in our little handmade library in the PCCA. What started as a small, personal collection of zines has now become a public resource for students to contribute their own zines or start a collection of their own! We founded our online Instagram archive shortly after to not only document all works that pass through our little library but to share them with zine fans near and far.
