No Ducks: Emerging Art Critics at the Owens Art Gallery

The Owens Art Gallery is pleased to launch No Ducks: Emerging Art Critics at the Owens Art Gallery, a new online venue for art criticism and essays written by Mount Allison University students. Featuring the writings of Shivanya AlbasLaika Dadounand Noah Lubendothe current issue covers a wide range of topics, including contemporary art and film, decolonization, Black and Jewish identity, cultural appropriation, Indigenous art, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Conceived in the early days of the pandemic, this exciting new publishing venture emerges from the J.E.A. Crake Art Critics-at-Large Program, a student mentorship project designed to give aspiring student writers the opportunity to work with an experienced art critic under circumstances similar to those of professional, independent art critics. Throughout the 2020-2021 academic year, a small group of students developed content for No Ducks under the supervision of Emily Falvey, Director/Curator of the Owens Art Gallery. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the J.E.A. Crake Foundation and Mount Allison University for making the J.E.A. Crake Art Critics-at-LargeProgram possible. Funding for this project came from the J.E.A. Crake ArtsWork Internships program, which is intended to provide Mount Allison University students with opportunities for experiential learning and to enable them to explore career options in the Arts.

I’m Buying an NB Book!

Saturday, September 18, 2021, is I’m Buying an NB Book! day. Bookstores, publishers, and literary organizations across New Brunswick have teamed up to launch this initiative which aims to highlight New Brunswick authors and increase sales of their books in local bookstores.

With literature as with food, buying local has a positive impact on the vitality and growth of our community. We invite readers and the literary sector to participate in I’m Buying an NB Book! day in their own way.

All initiatives put forward by individuals or by organizations to promote or to participate in this day are welcomed.

Here are a few ways to participate:

? Customize the I’m Buying an NB Book! poster (can be printed here: https://bit.ly/3BHjccj) by adding the address or website of a local bookstore or publisher and place the poster in a public setting (bookstore, library, market, theatre, cultural centre, restaurant, café, community centre, university, college, etc.).

Use the digital poster, tagline, and hashtags (#September18 #myNBbooks #IReadLocal) to promote I’m buying an NB book! day on social media (downloadable digital posters here: https://bit.ly/3BHjccj).

Curator: Emily Critch

these are our monuments is a gathering of artwork that honours the histories and memories embedded in the traditional waterways of the Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik. The title of the exhibition comes from “Poem 10,” by Mi’kmaw poet Rita Joe, in which she expresses a desire for the reader to reject colonial understandings of historical records and monuments and emphasizes the importance of holding reverence for the lands and waters that connect us throughout Mi’kma’ki and Wabanaki Territory. Using photography, installation, beadwork, sound, and poetry, the artists generate counter-cartographic narratives that honour the kinships and knowledge systems held within these waterways that sustain us.

We would like to acknowledge, honour, and pay respect to the traditional owners and custodians—from all four directions—of the land on which we live. It is upon the unceded, ancestral lands of L’nuk (the Mi’kmaq) that the Owens Art Gallery is built. While this area is known as Sackville, New Brunswick, it is part of Siknikt, a district of the greater territory of Mi’kma’ki. This territory is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship, which L’nuk, Wolastoqiyik, and Peskotomuhkati first signed with the British Crown in 1725. We express gratitude for the opportunity to love, work and play on this land.

The Estey Art Initiative is a transformational art program that is offered to children all over New Brunswick. Students will gain self confidence, sense of pride, and a sense of accomplishment through the direction of our talented Art Instructors.

In each session, the student artists will draw a new subject, and are encouraged to make their art intuitively and unique to their personalities with the use of the many art mediums that we use. Art instructors teach the curriculum step by step, breaking down concepts to make the overall picture achievable.

Not only do the student artists learn how to draw the subject in steps but then are also provided with a live demonstration of how to use a specific art medium to get the best results for their art from professional artists. That is when the student artists can unleash their potential and creativity to make their art their own. In this program encourages self expression, mindfulness, and gives children a lifelong coping skill.
