Working with Adult Singers Workshop: Changes, Challenges and Strategies

This workshop is held in conjunction with the New Brunswick Choral Federation’s Choral Fest 2018. Attendees may register for the workshop alone, or for Choral Fest as well.
People who enjoy singing usually want to maintain active choral involvement throughout their entire lives. Applying the principles of exercise physiology to maintaining a healthy singing voice at any age, Dr. Victoria Meredith addresses changes and challenges that singers tend to experience across time. In this interactive session, conductors and singers will explore what happens as voices mature; strategies for producing our best sound at any age; repertoire selection guidelines useful in choosing music for adult choirs; rehearsal techniques proven successful with adult singers; and relationships between choral singing and various aspects of health. Aimed at conductors and music directors, singers will find the session of value as well.The primary goal of this session is to help keep choir members singing as well as possible for as long as possible!

Dr. Victoria Meredith is a Professor of choral music at Western University’s Don Wright Faculty of Music, where she is now on leave. She has directed choirs of all ages, including the 2010 National Youth Choir of Canada and honour choirs in nearly every province and the United States. Ensembles under her direction have earned over twenty national awards. A frequent juror for arts organizations such as the Canada Council and music festivals across the country, Dr. Meredith maintains an active career as a guest conductor, workshop clinician, adjudicator and author. Her work on the adult voice has gained international recognition through the publication of her award-winning book “Sing Better As You Age” and her popular interactive workshops.
