Art is much more than just beautiful paintings of landscapes or important people. It can be a powerful vehicle for change, exploring and interpreting important socio-cultural issues and complementing academic pathways of knowledge. The Art of Creation combines storytelling, shadow puppetry, poetry and playwrighting to explore the role of men and non-birthing support partners in creating a healthy start to life.
A team of professional and semi-professional actors, poets, artists, and directors led a series of art and performance-based workshops with people in the Fredericton area over the past year. These workshops supported an experiential dialogue, tapping into an innate human desire to create as a means to reflect upon the science behind pre-natal health. Through art, participants were able to share thoughts, ideas and viewpoints that can be difficult to express in other ways.
The Art of Creation is a joint project of McMaster University and UNBโs Faculty of Kinesiology. For more information on the full project go here.
The Art of Creation will be on view from May 5- June 16 in the East and West Galleries of the UNB Art Centre. It can also be viewed online here.
The UNB Art Centre is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. The galleries are open 9 am – 4 pm on weekdays and during special events. Admission is free to members of the public.
