Caroline Brooks and Ben Kunder

Come kick off Summer with a special night of songs & music.

Caroline Brooks:

There’s a wall, in your family home. It’s next to an old stairway that leads to an attic you never go into, but the wall is alive and lined with photos. Each one a cherished memory locked in time, waiting to be brought down, dusted off and held in the hand of a storyteller intimately connected with the finer points of every detail. Caroline Marie Brooks is just such a storyteller. On Everything at the Same Time, the first solo outing from β…“ of Canadian harmony trio Good Lovelies, Brooks walks you through a wall of stories, taking moments from her life down and carefully recounting the feeling of the sun and the wind in the trees from days past and present.

Over 11 tracks, Brooks leads a vivid journey through feelings familiar to our hearts. Gentle guitar work laying a backdrop for Brooks’ sweetly divine vocals, densely layered with wurlitzers and mandolins and steel guitars to evoke feelings of memories both lost and found. Lead single β€œVitamin” evokes a sun-drenched nostalgia, albeit a nostalgia happening right in front of you, one that you can live in and hold onto. Even at the end of the record, with a cover of Roger Miller’s classic β€œOo-De-Lally” (from Disney’s Robin Hood), Caroline Marie Brooks has crafted an album that feels wholly familiar and distinctly her own – an instant classic waiting to be discovered and have its stories told.

Songs like β€œNight Drive” draw up the feeling of a night’s journey alone, just your headlights and the sky illuminating your endless path. β€œI can’t always be there” is a love letter to a child growing up before your very eyes and wanting to hold on to the memories of every perfect day. Even the instrumental β€œSong for Fred” is evocative of a feeling, a memory. It’s a place that we draw from in the moments when the future feels insurmountable.

Everything at the Same Time is a pandemic record only in time, recorded in the midst of an age when sometimes living through our memories of easier days may be all that we have. It asks only that we live and be present in the moment and to remember that though the days are long, the years are all too short. The inevitability of change looms in the distant, and Caroline Marie Brooks challenges you to hold on to the gift of the times we are in.

Ben Kunder:

Occupying a rare but accessible musical space between folk, pop, and Cali-style Americana, Toronto singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ben Kunder chronicles the ordinary and the extraordinary in luminous detail. With three highly acclaimed studio albums (2019’s Searching For the Stranger, 2018’s Better Human, and 2015’s Golden) and multiple international tours and festival appearances achieved to date, Kunder has amassed a devoted following while establishing himself as a sought-after collaborator and electrifying live performer. A committed social justice advocate, father to two young kiddos and compassionate member of the human race, Kunder consistently yields exquisite musical insights.

Lorenzo Society Wednesday Concert: Sebastian Fleet and Rebecca Dobbelsteyn 🎀

March 22, 2023 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

The Lorenzo Society is happy to remind you of the Weekly Wednesday Concert Series in honour of Dr. Li-Hong Xu continuing this Wednesday, March 22nd.

Sebastian Fleet

Sebastian Fleet began playing the viola at four before eventually falling in love with the guitar. Performing professionally since his teenage years, Sebastian received scholarships to study jazz guitar in Toronto with later stops in Montreal. Since returning home, Sebastian has been in various collaborations (Usse, The Exhortations, Owen Steel) with the most active bands being the Jazz Loyalty Program and the Seb Fleet Band. Sebastian has taught ukulele, bass and guitar at Long & McQuade for several years. Along with writing and producing his own music, teaching music has also been a joy.

Joining Sebastian will be Rebecca Dobbelsteyn. Rebecca is a professional musician in the Saint John area. She sings a variety of venues and events, ranging from solo performances on the Saint John Boardwalk to joining local band Jazz Loyalty Program at the Moonlight Bazaar and other regular performances. Rebecca teaches voice at Interaction Children’s Theatre, and has been featured on CBC Radio Information Morning to showcase her recently released EP Promenade.

The Lorenzo Society is excited to welcome Sebastian Fleet and Rebecca Dobbelsteyn as this week’s Wednesday musicians.
