Established in 2019, the Elm City String Quartet was brought together by their passion for chamber music and a desire to share their love of quartet repertoire with their home town of Fredericton. With Victor Vivas and Mercedes Salazar on violin, Mark Kleyn on viola, and Emily Kennedy on cello, the ECSQ’s exciting and broad programming pairs works by today’s composers alongside celebrated quartet classics. Their first performance was a memorable evening in a small art gallery that was so packed, there were children sitting on the floor between their music stands. Since then, the quartet has been captivating New Brunswick communities with their broad programming and charismatic playing.

più is a new concert series dedicated to music that defies genre. più is a musical term that translates to “more,” and this is the core of the series: to encourage the creation and presentation of performances that we’d like to see more of. Ambient, experimental, sound art and contemporary classical music – più is dedicated to fostering an appreciation and audience for these artforms via presentation, community building, and creation facilitation.
To soft launch the series, we’re pleased to be presenting Nova Scotia / Ontario supergroup, Scions on November 23rd at Wilmot United Church at 7:30PM. The evening will begin with an opening set by Fredericton’s Pallmer.

The Elm City String Quartet opens their season with string quartets that span three centuries – Haydn’s famous “Emperor” Quartet, Pulitzer-winning composer Caroline Shaw’s “Plan & Elevation,” and Smetana’s autobiographical quartet “From My Life.”
We’re back for ECSQ Season 3!
The ECSQ starts their season with their favourite concert formula; something old, something new, and a tune to sing on the way home. The concert kicks off with “The Emperor” string quartet by Haydn, the formative master of the quartet genre. The piece is a favourite classic, and a great way to refresh our quartet sound after a summer break. We continue with “Plan & Elevation” by Pulitzer Award winning composer Caroline Shaw, who is one of top movers and shakers in the modern quartet writing scene. We close the concert with Bedřich Smetana’s Quartet 1, “From my Life,” a musical memoir written while the composer’s hearing was rapidly deteriorating.
