Corey Hachey grew up in Bathurst NB, and now lives in Moncton NB. Hachey was in aย band called Sproll which disbanded in 2010 and is currently the singer in a four-piece Alt-Indie rock band called FM Berlin.
Where did you do your studies?
I am a self-taught musician and songwriter, but I did have some great mentors along the way who helped me sharpen my skills. I worked with some amazing producers (Laurence Currie, Jason Dufour, Josh Bowman, and Bill Bell) to name a few. I also took part in a Socan Song House workshop with Ralph Murphy which really helped me take my songwriting to a new place.
Do you aspire to any specific project(s) within the next 5 years?
I would like to be touring basically as much as possible.ย We have done tours of the Eastcoast and we have played Montreal and Toronto a few times, but we would like to do larger tours across Canada and the US.ย We are also planning on a European tour in the future.ย We signed a publishing deal with Sound Of Pop in April of this year.ย A few months ago I would have said that signing a pub deal would have been a goal of ours, but now it’s a reality and we are grateful for it.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by people, and I have recently been captivated by Carl Jung’s writings.ย I wish I had found them earlier.
What has influenced your decision to pursue your art here in NB rather than elsewhere?ย
I have lived outside of NB in the past.ย I lived in Toronto for a bit, and the city seemed to somehow speed up time or at least my perception of it.ย Before I knew it a year had gone by and I felt like I had done very little except wait in traffic for most of it…haha.ย In NB time seems to work at a rate similar to my own internal clock.ย This gives me a chance to think about things which is a big part of writing music.
What is a highlight of your career so far?
There have been a few highlights.ย One was writing, co-producing, and engineering our last album.ย I would say receiving the Music NB Emerging Artist of The Year award and also receiving the 2016 Bell Media prize was pretty cool.
What are the words you try to live by?
Why are we, or why am I, doing this?ย I’ve found this to be one of the most important questions any artist can answer.ย It sets things in order so that you can actually move forward.
Can you identify a challenge youโve faced and how you have overcome it?ย
We were both working full-time jobs during the making of the album, so what little time we could find (every day) between the hours of 6:00 PM and 2:00 AM we spent them in the studio.ย It was the toughest most satisfying two years of my life.ย Thankfully, we learned a thing or two during those years making the record, and now our process is much more, let’s say, manageable.ย The candle still burns at both ends, but it is no longer filled with jet fuel.
Where are some of the coolest places you’ve been with your music?
Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Manhattan
