2020 SHMF Signature Grant to NBCCD

2020 SHMF Signature Grant to NBCCDSheila Hugh Mackay Foundation is proud to announce a signature grant awarded to the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design to sponsor a virtual lecture series   A free weekly series of professional talks has been organized in partnership with the Atlantic Centre for Creativity to celebrate the talent and exceptional work of New Brunswick artists.  Building on a public program initiated in 2019, this virtual series reaches far beyond the traditional boundaries of local lecture format.

Conceived and organized by the Studio Head of the NBCCD Graduate Studies Program, Jean Rooney, this series of talks by artists and designers is a platform especially relevant during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Ms. Rooney notes, “it is essential to support and communicate with each other as artists and designers. As  artists and artist-educators, we teach what we know, but often, we teach who we are. In particular, we model to emerging artists and each other how to adapt, renew and survive. With this in mind, the speaker series shares the resilience and creativity of creators.”

With this sponsorship, SHMF continues to promote the visual arts of New Brunswick through the support of innovative New Brunswick driven projects.  More information on this  public series:

ABOUT THE CREATIVE CONSULT PROGRAM

Creative Consults is an online program for VANS members to access artist-informed expertise. Members will have access to a directory of consultant profiles and book directly with a creative expert that suits their needs. Each member consultant will have a profile on our website, making their services available to members, and set their hourly rates for each service.

Recommended rates are between $40 and $100 per hour.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Application
Once the expert has applied, a jury will choose the consultants based on the expertise they offer to artists and meet the eligibility criteria. This program is a VANS member-to-member benefit. The VANS membership is required to activate the consultants’ profile in the Creative Consults directory. There is no fee to participate beyond the VANS membership. Not a VANS member? You can become one here.

Consultant profile
Once the application is approved and the VANS membership status is confirmed, The consultant’s profile will appear on the Creative Consults page through the VANS website. Each profile will include a photo, short bio, list of consulting areas and the hourly rate for each type of consult they offer. We ask consultants to have clear service rates provided for members’ inquiries.

Booking requests
A member will search through the profiles to find a consultant that suits their needs. The consultant will receive a booking request from a VANS member via email and ensure they have the skills the member is seeking and are available. The consultant will follow up with the booking request within a week of receiving it. They will then independently coordinate a date and time with the member for the consultation within 3 months of the request.

Before the meeting
The consultant will email an invoice to the member stating the member’s consult needs, the consultation type, amount of hours booked, the total amount owed, payment instructions, date and meeting place confirmed (virtual meetings are encouraged at this time).

Payment
Once the meeting is confirmed, the member will send the payment directly to the consultant. It is advised that the consultant asks for the payment 2-3 days before their meeting. It is the consultant’s responsibility to collect their remuneration from the member.

After the meeting
The consultant will send VANS and the member a receipt to confirm the consultation’s completion. The member will receive a survey to provide feedback on their experience.

October news from Atlantic Presenters Association

IN THIS MONTH’S ENEWS. . .
NEWS, RESOURCES, & SUPPORT

Congratulations to APA award winner Jenelle Duval

A HUGE congratulations to Jenelle Duval, Arts & Culture Coordinator at First Light St. John’s Friendship Centre, for winning this year’s APA Award of Achievement! Thank you Jenelle for your tireless commitment to the Atlantic arts presenting community and the urban St. John’s indigenous community.

Fall artist pitches start next Thursday

On Thursday, October 15th APA will host the first of our Fall Pitch Sessions.

Pitches will be made by artists and/or their representatives who were chosen by our Contact East Showcase Jury earlier in the year. Each session will begin at 1pm Atlantic time every second Thursday. There will be five pitches each session and each pitch will be up to 5 minutes long. Following all five pitches there will be an opportunity for the APA members attending to ask the artists and/or their representatives questions.

Thank you for joining us at Contact(less) East!

The first (and hopefully only!) Contact(less) East is in the books!  We were thrilled with the turnout, the incredible sessions, and the overall vibe of the online conference. We welcomed participants from almost every province and territory, and we even had delegates join us from the UK. The digital format let those who might not normally be able to travel to the conference experience a taste of what Contact East is all about. Thank you to those who participated—there were many learning opportunities along with a lot of laughs and camaraderie.

Some testimonies from our wonderful participants:

“Thanks to everyone at Contact(less) East! This was my first time attending and I thought you did a truly terrific job. I was so impressed by everything, from the sessions to the people to the cheeky title this year. There was an amazing balance of meaningful and sometimes challenging conversations and also so many fun moments.

“Thank you for sharing so many invaluable resources with us and bringing such exceptional people together (virtually) to connect with over it all. I can’t wait to do it in person! PS: The closing party was the best ever. Disco lights! Costumes! Wigs! The greatest events group ever, Heist! A+++”

“Contact(less) East was full of insights and ideas. Challenging, stimulating, and moving. And fun! Brilliantly done APA staff. Thank you for transforming this cherished gathering into something new and rich.”

REMINDER: fill out the Contact(less) East feedback survey by TOMORROW NIGHT

Contact(less) East was a blast—but it was also our first foray into digital conferencing, and we know there are some things we could have done better. Your feedback will help us create more thoughtful, informative, and entertaining professional development opportunities in the future.

We please ask anyone who attended Contact(less) east to fill out our short feedback survey (seriously, it will only take a few minutes). Please submit your responses by midnight TOMORROW, October 9, 2020.

Good news: if you complete our feedback survey by the deadline, you will be entered in a draw to win a free registration to next year’s Contact East conference!

Call to action from FAME – Event Sector Support Campaign

A message from Martin Roy of FAME (Festivals and Major Events Canada)

The return to normal will not occur in 2021. It would be unrealistic to expect that we could restart our activities in full by next summer. We must convince public health authorities to approve innovative proposals which would allow us to maximize our capacity to generate profits and survive the crisis. The formulas employed by drive-in concerts and socially distanced concerts that we have already seen around the world can serve as a starting point for coming up with these types of ideas.

This is what we need the Federal government to recognize, and why we are today launching what we are calling the “Events Sector Support Campaign.”

Why now? Because the federal budget is currently being conceived, Minister Guilbeault will be making his Departmental asks to the Minister of Finance, and the party caucus will also be putting pressure on having the needs of their local communities addressed in the budget. Now is the time where decisions will be made for action in 2021, notably with regard to financial aid for festivals and events.

For this reason, we are asking for members to take the following action over the coming weeks:

If you have not already spoken with your local Member of Parliament since the beginning of the crisis, now is the time. We suggest that you communicate with your elected official to explain your situation in relation to some of FAME’s recommendations for Canada’s touristic and economic recovery. Specifically, we are hoping that you can ask your MP to speak with and write to both Ministers Guilbeault and Freeland (the Minister of Finance) in support of our recommendations.

To that end, we are providing a template that you can use and adapt as you see fit.
