MAKERmatic: Custom Maker Kits Designed for You

MAKERmatic

Custom Maker Kits Designed for You

In the spirit of our popular MAKER MAKER workshop series, we are excited to launch MAKERmatic, a personalized Maker Kit Quiz.

Since we cannot gather and share in making together, we’re packaging up small art experiences for you to do at home, in your dorm room with your favourite tunes, or on a virtual craft night with friends.

Whether you are looking for an end-of-term study break or a weekend project, we’ve got you covered. Are you a pen and paper person, or is needle and thread more your thing? Let us know and we’ll gather everything you’ll need to make something awesome.

How it works:

1. Take the quiz at: owensartgallery.outgrow.us/makermatic

2. Find your Maker Kit match

3. We will prepare a custom Maker Kit just for you and email you when it’s ready

4. Stop by the Owens for safe curbside pick-up

Maker Kits are for anyone looking for a creative outlet during these unprecedented days. Unfortunately, while we would love to, we are not able to send Maker Kits by mail. If you live outside Sackville, we encourage you to take the quiz and create your own kit. Feel free to be in touch if you would like tips on getting started or advice on finding supplies.

When you receive notification that your Maker Kit is ready, come by the Owens for safe curb-side pick-up. Kits can be picked-up any weekday between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. Please ring the doorbell at the entrance closest to the turning circle next to the Chapel and stand six feet back from the door. Community masks are mandatory for picking up kits.

Follow the hashtags #OwensArtGallery and #OwensMakerMatic to see what everyone else is making and to share your own creations.

Maker Kits are free and available until December 11.

The Owens Art Gallery acknowledges the generous support of all its funders, including Mount Allison University, the Canada Council for the Arts, the New Brunswick Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture, the Town of Sackville, and the Friends of the Owens.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the physical spaces of the Owens Art Gallery and Colville House are currently closed to the public. To find out more about our online, onscreen, and off-site programs, please visit mta.ca/owens and umbrellaprojects.ca.

Holiday Shop Feature

ArtsLink NB knows it’s been a very difficult year for everyone, and the arts community has been especially hard-hit by all the cancellations due to COVID-19. Our staff have been panic buying local since the beginning of the pandemic, and we want to encourage our audience to buy from local artists as well.

To that end, we’re running an online artist shop promotion in advance of Christmas. If you’re an artist and have an online shop you’d like us to feature, please send an email to info@artslinknb.com with a short description and a link to your shop. If you’ve got a discount code for us, feel free to add that as well. We’ll be collecting links until Monday and we will start featuring them all through December.

In the meantime, check out the fantastic gift guide put together by our friends over at NB Made: https://nbmade.ca/pages/2020-holiday-gift-guide

+++ info >

SHMF supports Acadian art restoration project

Signature Grant Announcement

SHMF supports Acadian art restoration project

The Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation Signature Grant Program provides an opportunity for the Board of Directors to invest in unique needs, opportunities and challenges in New Brunswick. The foundation is pleased to announce a $ 7,500 grant to Nation Prospère in support of a major art restoration project.

Under the direction of Nation Prospère, a significant work by the renowned Acadian artist Édouard Gautreau is destined for permanent exhibition at the Musée de Kent.  Le Rideau de scène de la Déportation is a large canvas that was commissioned by the late Msgr. Camille-André LeBlanc in 1931 while he served as parish priest in Shemogue, near the Village of Cap-Pelé.

Parish churches and congregations of sisters played a leading role in the support of cultural life in French communities of the Maritimes between the late 1800’s and the 1970’s. The Shemogue parish theatre hall was one these cultural centres that served its local community well until it fell into disrepair in the 1960’s. The building was subsequently sold and was ravaged by fire in the 1970’s, thankfully sparing the theatre curtain. In the ensuing years the canvas became increasingly damaged until it was rescued by the late Father Maurice Léger in 1979 and put in the care of the Société Historique de la Mer Rouge.

The protected artwork remained dormant for 40 years in the basement of the Louis-J.-Robichaud High School in Shediac until its ownership was transferred to the Nation Prospère Acadie charity in May 2020, with the promise of restoring and showcasing the painting. The Musée de Kent in Bouctouche accepted the challenge and an ambitious restoration project was begun in July 2020.

Through the efforts of many, the canvas has been saved and an initial cleaning has been done of what is believed to be the largest painting in Acadie, measuring 10 feet high by 18 feet long (3 by 5.5 metres).  The partially restored canvas was displayed to the public in August 2020 for the first time in 50 years and will now enter a deeper phase of conservation.  SHMF is proud to support this conservation effort, involving the New Brunswick Conservator and Fine Art Restoration Specialist, Alena MacAlasdair.

“It has been an inspiring and rewarding experience to see this significant piece of Acadian heritage come to life and we are truly grateful to the many benefactors who have made this possible thus far,” says Pierre Cormier, President of the Kent Museum in Bouctouche. “We look forward to the day of being able to complete the project and having it displayed on a permanent basis in our museum,” he added.

“I wish to express our deepest gratitude to the Sheila Hugh MacKay Foundation for their interest in this epic project and their generous contribution towards this endeavour,” commented Daniel LeBlanc, Executive Director of Nation Prospère Acadie. “We are committed to completing the restoration work on this unique work of Acadian and New Brunswick artistic heritage and to preserve it for future generations,” he concluded.
